Zumo/Map source route time difference

I have been making my first proper routes for a trip to Austria which is why I got the Zumo. When I do the routes on the computor they give one time and when I transver them to the Zumo the times change and not just by 5 minutes or so
I have done one route supplied by the hotel we are staying at in Austria for a days ride which is 390 KM the computor says it should take 7hrs 24 mins and the Zumo says 4hrs 56 mins
Which time is more accurate as it is making it differcult to decide which routes to do and which are to long (time wise)

Make sure your preferences are set up the same in mapsource and in the zumo.
The routing preference in the mapsource can be the main problem.

And you have to use the same calculation for the route in both eg faster route or shorter distance

Can you alter the driving speeds on the Zumo like you do in map source this is the only thing I can think that might be different

My problem is usually that the computer says the route should take 7hrs 24mins but I only take 4hrs 56mins on the bike.
Seriously, on my SP3 the routes are transfered with the same timings as on the PC. Very strange. As I'm thinking of buying a Zumo I'm as curious as you.

This is a "known" thing to Zumo owners. In short: The Zumo time is much more accurate.

In long:
Mapsource got it wrong. A part of it can be explained by the fact that roadspeeds are set to USA maximums. Road types as they are calculated are not the same type of roads as in the EU> A USA "Highway" can even be a dirtroad! EU Highways are most often what the yanks call freeways or interstates.

You can change the speed setting in options in Mapsource and speed up the calculated road types.

Second more: The Zumo actualy "learns" from its Master. Bet you didn't know that . For any given type of road on witch you ride for more then about 50 miles (or was it 50km?), it will remember the actual averige speed you traveled, and take this speed into consideration when planning a trip.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

Dave, don't be mislead. It's very unlikely that Mapsource is 2.5 hours 'wrong' compared with the Zumo, over such a relatively short trip. Are you absolutely sure that all the parameters are set the same? Also, are the 2 route lists identical? Did you re-calculate the route on the Zumo?

There are many reasons why you might get such a significant error, but the most likely reason will be because the 2 routes are different. Or that one involves a detour by ferry.

I'm not suggesting you've made a mistake, but experience has shown me that Mapsource is qute accurate, and the times rarely differ from the GPS units by more than a few minutes - provided they really are identical routes/maps/speeds etc, etc.

Keep meddling with the software; I'm sure you'll find the cause

Are you asking the Zumo to calculate the journey time after downloading from the PC?

On the 2820 and 2610 IIRC the unit does learn the usual speeds you achieve and uses this if you recalculate the route either by asking it to or going off route. However, once back on the PC planned route, going back into the routes and reactivating the saved route will take you back into the preset speeds in my experience, hence the question at the start of this post

I have a road book from thehotel we are going to stay at and I planned the routes on the PC using this which gave me time/distance. I then transfered these to the Zumo then all I did was pick each route and go into it and rename it. Whilst doing this I got the new times usually with the same millage or in some cases 1 or 2 miles different. As I have only used the Zumo a couple of times and only once with a specific route I have planned I hope I have not made any mistakes. I have had problems putting the routes on an SD card and then reading them on the Zumo (see seperate thread!).

Forget the possible difference in travelling speeds - unless you have been really daft & set them to ridiculous numbers. Using the default values in Mapsource & on the Zumo will not result in the differences in journey times you have described.

You must have changed the route on your Zumo; the only other explanation is that you have not got the installed (high-detailed) maps on the Zumo, and the unit is using only base-mapped roads.

The routes are bassed in Austria but go into Italy and Switzerland.

It did not ask me to recalculate the maps are the ones on the Zumo when I got it (new), how do I know if they are the correct maps?

390k = 250 miles. 5 hours (Zumo) = average of just under 50mph. 7.5 hours is an average of 32mph.

Only you know what roads you have selected. If it's fast A-roads throughout, your overall average will be around 42-45mph. Mountain wiggly roads throughout could result in a 32mph average. To average 50mph, you must be riding a fair bit of dual carriageway.

Which Zumo have you bought?

Does it have pre-installed detailed European mapping, or just the main roads & motorways? You can tell by zooming out big-time, and seeing yellow squares around the map segments, or zooming in to to less than 0.2m (typically) & seeing if small streets are visible.

Have you got the detailed mapping installed on your computer (Mapsource)?

The routes are based in Austria but go into Italy and Switzerland.

That's stuffed one possible theory. Unless of course you've got some avoidances set in the Zumo ie avoid closed passes which isn't set in the PC.

That would only be feasable if you set your zumo to recalculate the route

But when exporting a route it simply "calculates" (not re-calculate). The Mapsource route is then pretty much identical transported in the zumo. The Zumo still shows a lower time to travel.
