Picked up my new mag 800gs today... still grinning, damn those running in miles.

Fitted sw motech bars, i read somewhere they dont fit right on the cross member, need a little coaxing.

Cant wait till after first service (next weekend haha).

Oh and that MM/Powerbronze screen, fabulous, hardly any body blow at all, still get a little on my head though but not half as much as before. Im 5' 7".

Hi Santrix,

I had a test ride on an 800GS just recently, and loved it -lighter than my 1150GSA, and a lot easier to move around etc. Couldn't believe the cornering on the 800 too, -might be just me, but it was a matter of point and go -it just held the corners a treat.
So, all was going fine until I ran out of filling stations, none for the last 30 miles, and with 5 miles left showing on the clock it ran out of fuel...embarrassing or what -had to walk to next garage etc etc.

So, I have a good read of all the info here on the 800's -only couple of doubts I have ( as I do love my 1150, but age beckons , that's me & bike !!), are how it handles with luggage, tent, panniers etc, and I found the engine a bit peaky/jerky on the throttle. Maybe I needed more time with the bike , as I only did around 130 miles. I would be a little cautious with that kind of throttle response on gravel and mud.

But, it is certainly on my list for my next bike in 18 months or so.
Final things, tubed tyres ??? and water cooled...a chain I could just about manage to live with !

Obviously only had the bike a day, but to address some of your thingies.. I used to have another injected parallel twin and to me this one's the same, you get used to it in a very short while, it is a bit jerky i guess if your coming from carbs or singles or anything else really, but nothing enough to spoil the fun. Tubed tyres.... this ones easy, carry enough tools to change it yerself if you have a needle... its not that hard, helps if your with someone else to break the bead though. Water cooled? as long as it doesnt leek (and i had a look at my tophose on my new bike today and it seems to be a re-enforced one which doesnt look like any of the others that have shown problems, im hoping theyve fixed that in the factory)... Luggage is allways a stability killer IMHO, 6k miles through morocco and europe this summer was quite hairy on a 650gs single, again, if you want earodynamic panniers go for a pan european or somehting, i dont think these bikes are meant for silly speeds anyway.

If your doing gravel on a regular basis, change the tyres, more confidence and grip, as soon as mine are worn out ill be doing TKCs.

Mine has a scottoiler fitted by dealer, so hopefully little chain maintenance. Besides whats 90 quid to replace a chain every couple of years if you dont take care of it?

Just my 2 p worth.

Besides if you go too fast, your either missing too much scenery or picking the long boring routes.. these things are meant for fun, bends and 'stuff a zx6 can't or is crap at doing'. Trust me ive owned em all.

Take the plunge, be happy......I am....

Hi Santrix, can't really argue with any of that...I'm no speed merchant either, hence the 1150GA ! And I agree re a chain -cheaper and easier to fix than a shaft drive.Scottoiler, as you say, sorts it out.
Still would prefer tubeless though -maybe they'll put spoked wheels like the GSA, can't understand why they haven't done that. I'd love to have an 800 for a couple of weeks, and try some of the little roads around the TouraTech area in S Wales.
Did you see their 800GS, fully kitted out ...tried to blag a ride the other weekend at their "Event", but they weren't giving any test rides.

Have fun on yer'bike.... and maybe put some more info up after you've run it in. Must say the engine was, overall, very sweet on the bike I rode, and it only had around 1200 miles on it -guess it'll get sweeter as it gets used....I'm still very tempted, and I'll see if BMW make any minor "changes" at the Bike Show at the NEC.:thumb:thumb:thumb
