Happy new year!

I've joined the fold and bought a 1150gsa. Its a 03. Ibought it yesterday:)

Bike 5k since last service. at 29,000miles now.

I was riding round earlier, enjoying the bike - what a bike (i was on a r850r before) and did about 50 miles. I got home, put bike on side stand and opened the gate to my garden. Straightened the bike up and she refuses to start!

The symptoms are this : Loads of electricity in battery. The oil pressure light is stuck on. Bike has loads of oil. I can hear the fuel pump priming! The servo brakes are whirring etc. The bike will not start.

No, I'm not using throttle when starting. Nope, I'm not driving with the fast idle on.

Hynnes says that it could be the oil pump, the oil pressure switch or event the gauze in the oil filtration system is blocked? The worst I heard was the oil filter has burst:blast

I've had this bike 24hours. THe previous owner is a tosser from on here and never had a problem.

Can anyone please offer any suggestions? Thanks.

Also, the bike goes rat tat tat tat when I hit the ignition switch. I presume thats the starter relay?

really am a bit upset here.

Ahh,

Reading your 1st post I was going to say check you didn't accidentally catch the kill switch with your sleeve/glove but that rat tat tat tat, that's a knackered battery by the sounds of it!

:thumb2

Turn your lights on & try to start the bike, if they go dim/off I'd recharge the battery & if it's still doing it buy a new 'un. (battery, not bike)

Good bikes 850R'S.

Put it on e-bay.

Ok. Should i not worry about the oil pressure light? That should go out after a few secs one the ignition is turned on. Shouldn't it?
The previous owner kept his on a battery charger. One of the mods is a yoke that you can attach a set of jumper leads to bike. Can i jump start it? I have leads.

If the engine isn't running forget about the oil pressure warning light!

The light only goes out once the engine is running & pressure has built up. :thumb2

Try & jump start by all means.
Ask the last owner how old the battery is.
I'd put my money on a flat/duff battery.

If you've got a multimeter check the voltage across the battery terminals - should be in the high 12's.

Thankyou Doctor.

I'll sort a battery out on Saturday morn. It's funny but the previous owner never needed to use the jump start plugs. How happy I am that he installed them!

I'll try in the morning and get someone to let me jump it off their car. I can't trickle charge the bike. Even with a new battery, am I going to have problems with using it to commute? I hope not!

On a positive side, I love the seating position.

I love the degree of turning you can do on it. It's like a london minicab in comparison to my other bike. (Yes, I now own TWO BMW motorcycle:aidan)

I'm fascinated by the servo brakes but wonder if they will cause the battery hastle with extra drain.

Love the mirrors! they work. I'm 6'4'.

I love it's hooligan potential:augie

I love the attention it gets

The spot lights are amazing. They should have been in that film 'i am legend!'

I love the way I can drive over anything I want and it isn't a worry.

I think my r850r with remus and no cat is actually a more fun engine but best of both worlds here perhaps:thumb The 850r I have really is a hooligan machine. Not super fast but it's loud, fast, agile and did I mention it's like thor himself is on the road without the baffle!!! I'll be leaving the gs standard for the mo. It's had the cat removed and origional silencer. Looks like one of steptoes cat code mods going on as well. Bar the battery, she's a lovely ride.

The screen will need tobinators and the touring panniers on it at the mo really arn't cutting it.

What else, oh, yes: I'm looking for a baglux cover for it too:thumb

LOVE the dual accessory socket. Having one on the dash will be SOOO handy

Love the big tank.

I hope this bike starts in the morning!!!!

I'll put up pix when I'm happy and have her the way I want to show her off.

Just a final thing, the bike was bought with the intention of driving to mayo via the backroads from dublin without stopping. I'll be doing a little off roading then. Bought it because it's taller than the gs standard. It's a bit wide perhaps:D

I'll update this tomorrow.

Previous owner here.I reckon you may need a new battery.I have always had the bike garaged and on an optimate when not in use.As you know I also have the Ks so the Gs hasn't had much recent use.I never had a problem starting the bike.I don't think there is a serious problem(hope not)

No explanations necessary. It's all part of the road :thumb

Amazing what goes with the battery. I'm handy with a volt meter. I'll be grand. I like the tool kit area too. Could squeeze a few other bits in there I think:rob Also nice to have it intact. good man. Thanks for taking my call earlier. Optomisers and alarms. Personally, I don't like either.

I've an optimate - but only use it as a charger - maybe once a month (if that) plug it in - within an hour it will be showing green - then another hour just to confirm alls ok. and thats it - pack the thing away and forget about it.

Alarm?? rip the damn thing out.

Hi,
Congratulations on your new machine - good choice!
I suggest you also remove the starter and clean everything: the electric contacts and if you have the time - clean the solenoid and all that stuff. It gets stuckier with the dirt, not helping a dodgy battery.
If you have more questions, I will be happy to give you more details.

Oils pressure light.

If it stays on when the engines running; down on the l/h side at the lower partr of the engine is the oil pressure switch, pull the wire off if it still stays on it's just a wiring fault happend to me. If this is it put it on here and I'll tell you where it will be.

Just tried to jump start it using a running car battery.

Nothing starting.

Relay chattering

can hear the starter motor going but it's not firing. Checked the connections on starter motor. all fine.

Loads of power in the battery.

does it sound like the starter motor is gone?

This is brillient, I buy a bike to replace the unreliable one and this...

must try and be positive here.

Ok, also, the clock has reset itself twice:(

I'll have a look at the starter motornow. I've postponed work for an hour or two

I own an 1100gs and know that the sidestand has a cut out switch on it, what I don't know at the mo is whether it kills all power to the starter so you'd get nowt. Just got in after a 15 hour night so may be rambling utter bo**ox here, someone will probably put me right. Might be worth checking that the sidestand switch isn't faulty or make sure it's on the main stand with the sidestand folded up before attempting to start it?

Good luck!

Regards Dave

Hi Knuckles

It sounds like your magnets may have dropped off the casing in the starter

JUst remove and split the starter you can buy individual bits for them in any decent auto electrical repair shop they are just Valeo D6 I think RA but may be corrected

There are certain Renault / citroen / volvos that have these fitted the only catch being is that the alloy nosecones are different for each application but you have your one and they are interchangeable

Be aware of direction of rotation as there were clockwise and counter clockwise ones (on the cars)

The upside is that these bits are relatively cheap and easy to source

Hi jaythro,

I can't find those is my hynnes manual. are they called something else by chance? Really need this bike to run...looking like the stealers for quick fix...

I took my starter off and took it to a local alternator / starter repair place. He stripped it in front of me, cleaned it all, replaced a couple of parts, then rebuilt it like new and charged me £10.00. I'd have a look for a local car specialist as the parts are very common :thumb2

i've sourced one of those starter motors but the fella on the phone was saying you need a hugh amount of heat to connect the magnets?

Would a starter motor from an r850r work?
