Anyone know someone who would be able to rivet some replacement plastic protection items on to my '07 GSA top case?

Parts 1 and 3 in the diagram.

I have the parts but they come with screws ... and I would rather they were riveted.

Like it says on the left ... I'm in Surrey

Oh! Is it? ... Awl-right!

Okay ... so ... er ... what sort of 'pop rivet gun' do I need ... and what sort of rivets? And ... how does one remove the rivets that are in place?

And ... why couldn't my dealership do it then? I asked ever-so nicely ...

any rivet gun will do , diy shops sell em, if ye get one with a swiveling head even better , but not nessasery.

the rivets can be drilled out, all ye have to do is drill the heads off, the drill bit doesnt need to be as big as the rivet head , just big enough to drill the head away from the holding pin...

not to confuse ye

get a drill just a bit smaller than the rivet head

if ye get stainless rivets, they wont rust as bad.

the rivet size is measured in hole incriments , ie get a 4mm rivet for a 4mm hole, it wont wobble around as much.

they also come in different lengths, measure the amount of material to clamp together , and get a rivet a bit longer that the material.

the bit ye measure is the fat bit with the skirt on the end, not the long pin..., measure from end of fat bit to the skirt, this is yer size of rivet)

a rivet gun works by pulling the shaft back up to make like a skirt to clamp bits together, easiest way i can think of explaining it.

put yer rivet in the gun ,long pin in gun , tuther bit in the bit to fit to box , then squeeze the gun together , it will feel wierd at 1st then it just snaps back , towards ye, so be a bit carefull.

after ye got a tidy rivet and yer bit fixed:D

Great! Job done then!

Seriously, thanks for the 'step-by-step' ... I appreciate the helpfulness of it. :thumb2

And there was I thinking an 'ugg' was something Kate Moss wore on her feet :blast

You may want to think about using a washer on the inside, it will help to spread the load. if the material being riveted is soft the rivet could pull through during the squeezing process. The washer will need a hole the same size as the rivet diameter.

got a variety of rivet sizes at work including some white ones(!) so you won't need to buy loads --- i can post some :thumb2

Wow! Cheers guys! I mean ... all of you! I'm amazed that what I thought was a mundane request has generated such generous replies :blush

digga and swissrob: very kind of you to offer. I would want to match the appearance of the ones on the cases

... just not so blurry! :augie

How do they do that then ... the domed finish? I'm actually getting interested in rivets now! :eek

i can easily get you dome head rivets but because you pull a stack thru the middle of them they will be different to the origianl style rivets you have, because the original rivets are solid rivets and the ones suggested are blind rivets ( meaning you dont need access from both side so you can install them in a blind hole)

if you want solid rivets i can also send you some solid dome head rivets but the problem them will be when you hammer the end to expand the tail of the rivet you need something curved to prevent flattening the the dome of the rivet.

Hi swissrob

That's why I wondered if it might be better to get a professional to do it ...

So ... is there a special tool for keeping the shape of the rivet head? (I'm gonna be an expert at the end of all of this! :augie )

press stud kits some time come with a convex fitting to prevent studs flattening.
press_stud_kit.jpg not brill but it had the dome bit, and ye have a load of studs to do other repairs.

using a ball hammer

other option is a convex punch

post some pics up , when ye do it:thumb

Cheers ugg ... I'll give this a bit of thought ...

swissrob: offers of rivets are most welcome since I only need a handful ... once I've drilled out one of the existing ones I'll let you know the hole size.
