I'm asking if there's anyone who's got one in the Wanted section and thought I'd mention it here. It's for a Nov 2003 built bike with the black cases. :thumb2

I may be needing one because mine only has 3rd & 4th gears at the moment. I'll check the gear lever and linkage when I've washed it in the morning but it's not looking good. :(

One sold on Ebay last week for around £250, it was described as new.

It might be best bet to send it to Scrimingers, and get it rebuilt. At least you know what you've got then instead of a dodgey second hand one that might be a money pit:thumb2

Thanks. There's one there now but the mileage is the same as mine IIRC and it's silver. :barf

I've heard this is the thing to do but I'll bet he's well busy at this time of year and I'd like to get out and about. In fact I went past your gaff today for some Hereford beef from the farm and a burger at the doggers truck stop in Broxton and wondered if you'd fancy one; a burger that is. :thumb

What I'd like is a gearbox to drop in, because I might like go somewhere next week, and then deal with what is broken later.

There's a silver one from a 2002 bike being sold by James Sherlock for £500 (a clean-up and squirt with Hammerite smooth black will cure the colour problem).

There's also a new black one with low first for sale at £590.

This second-hand, grubby, black one with 32,000 miles for a very reasonable £170.

Finally, I have this (hardly used),

that I bought against the day that I ever needed it.

What's it worth? :nenau

Threre's a place near London Bridge does gearbox re builds, web address www. japandgeman.co.uk my mate had one done here he rode it in and then picked it up very pleased with the result. Do have a check of the lever pivot
take it to bits, don't for get the allen bolt holding all together is locktited and will require attention with the hot air gun. I had the same prob and it turned out to be this, put it back well greased been ok ever since.

So, I managed to get out of bed and was washing the bike by the time The Archer's Omnibus started and had dried it off a ready to start stripping when The World This Weekend began.

I had achieved this by the time The Archers Sunday edition had started...

So what to do next?

Firstly to MikeP: Please PM me your asking price for your gearbox and we can take it from there. There's cash waiting for you if you can do better than Mr Sherlock and satisfy yourself to what the recent FleaBay Newish item went for. I'm always happy to barter and if all concerned are happy then it's a done deal. :thumb

Secondly to Steptoe: You may well get this job. I'm going to open it up tomorrow and have a look to see what's going on. When I drained the oil this evening it was as clear as filtered olive oil and will therefore require further inspection when I split the cases.
If I find that the parts which need replacing require additional tools and measurements I will call you regarding your service offer. :thumb2

Thirdly to Anyone Else: Don't break your gearbox because it's hard work when you don't have a table lift. :blast

Does this drive shaft need replacing?

It looks like the bearings or races have collapsed ot the top of the UJ.

I think the technical term for that is "the fecking feckers fecked" :thumb2

or the other " technical term " -- not worth a wank --

:D

Ditchy :(
hope you get her sorted and it's not too costly...........

Thanks Chaps. :thumb

When I took hold of my shaft I thought "that doesn't feel too good, and have you seen the state of my driveshaft as well". :blast

Well, there were no broken parts or anything that looked out of place inside the gearbox.

All the shafts look okay and as far as I can tell all of the gears are doing what they are supposed to:

The only thing that caught my attention was the marks on the selector drum grooves, and a bit of brinelling from the rollers, seen here:

It's good to see the magnet working well on the sump plug. :thumb

So, if anyone's got any clues as to why this gearbox was locked between 3rd & 4th I'd like to hear them please. :kissy2

When you had that off at EM in Sept..........................did you fall on the left hand side?

In the gearshift linkage just on the inside of the gearbox there is a Roll pin is it broken or sheared?

No. No broken parts. The Roll pin was stuck in the opposite housing when I split the cases and missed it when I was counting the parts. At first I thought it was missing.

When you had that off at EM in Sept..........................did you fall on the left hand side?

No, but I fell off five times to the left at the Boxer Beet, and once to the right. :(

I'm about to reassemble it and see if I can get it to shift up and down the box manually.

ive a spare

if you want to loan it, its only a humble std gs box though, it doesnt have the machismo of a gsa...

He's got a nice Bantam if you fancy it.

He's probably too busy to eat.

I've always wondered what the inside of the box looked like. Brave man for taking it apart, mine would be en-route to a specialist.
