any replies welcome-
i am shopping for 2 man tents -
possibly a north face tadpole 23...or similar (there are tens of 2 mans available) - my question is this -

does anyone have a good quality 2 man tent that fits in their left hand (exhaust side) 1200GS pannier ? :nenau

i have a great sleeping bag that compresses to a tiny size and want a good quality tent that also packs away small - so i can get both in the pannier......

ultimately i guess i will just take my pannier into the shop(s).......but any answers most welcome here.thanks :thumb

I seem to remember seeing that the poles on the North Face Tadpole are quite long...i looked at a North Face Particle 1 man and they were about 55cm long.

Have you looked at the Vango Spirit 200 TBS, or the Terra Nova Laserlarge 1 or 2 - the Terra novas are very ligt and spacious but again not sure of the pole length when packed.

I was thinking the same thing myself, but I was looking at one that would strap across the bike instead of the pillion seat. I came across a coleman epsilon, which is really a one man tent, the Vango Tempest 200 looks like a cozy 2 man if you know what I mean, but I liked the look of a Vaude Taurus ultralight. To be honest, I think that only a one man tent like the Vango or the coleman would actually fit inside a pannier.

Can I ask what make of sleeping bag you use, my two won't compress small, but then again, one kept me alive on a February night half way up a Welsh mountain. :thumb

snugpack - "softie 3 merlin"

as used by british army. 3 seaons. £75 (brand new) from army surpluss store. can get them in left or right zip - is a "mummy" bag (tapers at bottom instead of rectangular like most bags)

Try Lightwave zro trek 4 season tiny pack size fits in a pannier :thumb

Steve - Were you after one man or two man - if its 1 man then there are quite a few more options that will fit in your pannier.

Cotswold Outdoor currently have the Outdoor Designs Goretex Race raider on sale, half price, from £280 to £140. This is two man, single skin goretex, 1.9kg - again, not sure of the pole length, but may be worth enquiring. Not sure how effective single skin goretex is at reducing condensation, it maty be that they are only effective in windier environments.

been looking into this for ages trying to find one that works. you only have 44cm along but if you pack poles and rest seperate you can get much longer in (across diagonal) which means that most of the vango lightweight 2-3man tents will go in. Vango Spectre 200 is 43cm x 12cm.

try looking at outdooraction.co.uk - not the cheapest but close to it and they do have a good selection on the wbsite

Still havent got all the gear yet but am looking at getting tent, bag, therarest and cooking gear in - basically all the camping gear in the one pannier. Maybe I am being a little optimistic.

Al,

I reckon the original poster will have bought his tent by now, but if you are still looking for a suitable one, I can recommend

Mountain equipment

TerraNova
http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/epages/...23008eb8462741ac1001400644/Product/View/43LAG

There are others, but I would try to get as light as possible - if I were you (bearing in mind that lightweight tents have lightweight groundsheets and may require a supplementary sheet for stoney ground)

It is probably unreasonable to expect to pack tent poles into a pannier, but they can be easily lashed to panniers/topbox/bike, I'm sure? :thumb2

I've a vaude mk2 and it fits nicely inti the lid of my Vernatech pannier:thumb
then my sleeping bag, airbed and pillow go nicely in the rest of the pannier leaving the other pannier for clothes, deckchair and cooking gear etc.:D
not sure whether it'd fit in standard 1200 panniers though.

just realised how old this thread is:eek: but what the hell

hows about one of these.....

serious tent

44cm poles
If it is quality you are after and poles that fit in a MM case (no idea about BMWobble-U ones:augie !!
then consider the : HILLEBERG Nammatj (brilliant:thumb )

2 poles which fold down to a bunch - longest 44cm
Each pole has 8 sections (6 the same at 44cm long each) and 2 shorties
Fit in my MM cases lengthwise:thumb
Tested in +53C and - 15 so far and torrential rains-
Porch large enough to cook in.
There is a longer version if you need more space.
Top notch ventilation too through both ends
Have a look here http://www.hilleberg.se/default-e.HTM
Erection time- less than 3 minutes ( come on that should be good for a few comments :p )

Good size tent - you could almost get the bike in too :thumb2

Tested to +53Cdeg? You could do Yorkshire puds at that temperature!

I guess that most tents (apart from el-cheapo ones with fibreglass poles) would fit into MM panniers :thumb2

To be honest - the tent would be the last thing I put inside a pannier (unless security was an issue) - as it doesn't matter if it gets wet.

Fill the panniers up with good malt whisky  and lash the tent to the outside :thumb2

Packable tents

Have you seen the Khyam pocket tents, I took four pocket singles to Norway last year, they don't have any poles so pack size is 35 by 15 cm and only weigh 1.8 kg's each. We put one each side of my gs and one each side of my mates k1200. If I could work out how to upload pictures you would see that it works really well. There is a pocket double at 35 by 17 cm and 2.2 kg's but we all wanted our own space. The tent comes with webbing straps that you simply throw over your bike, car, a tree, dry stone wall etc etc and peg the other side. www.khyam.co.uk

May I suggest...Camping international, Gillingham.
Massive store with the tents all up and packed versions on show too. Very helpful, use them all the time.
I've not used the Horsham branch though.

HI there,

I have a North Face Tadpole and it fits in the Left Hand Pannier

Hi There...

Cannot recommend Hilleberg tents strongly enough having used a Nallo 2 GT for some time now, and having carried it on my back for 170 miles. These tents are the elite and will handle anything that is thrown at them weatherwise (I know, I have experienced and now I believe). Go for the GT version which gives you an extended porch ideal for storing all your gear in leaving the sleeping area free for all the activites that go on in there.

The best thing about these tents is... they go up so fast. Tent on fast acting Viagra type fast. Very, very handy when it's chucking it down. Another very good idea is to get the Hilleberg footprint with your tent as it'll save the groundsheet on your inner and provide a floor for your porch area. These tents will amaze all your fellow campers and make converts of them with the ease and speed with which they go up. You can sit sipping a cold one watching the others struggle. The various ranges come in different sizes, you takes your pick and pays your money.

Good user reviews can be found at : www.buachaille.com

I bought my two Hilleberg tents at : www.alpenstock.co.uk based in Manchaster. They will post stuff out to you, give discounts (yes) and I found them to be the cheapest at the time with great service.

Hope this Helps
