I know this has been discussed before but I can't find the definitive answer after searching the forum for some time.
What's this connector for (the one behind the GPS socket)...

Thanks :)

You can (with the right cable) attach you Zumo (or other such item) to it

The satnav then switches on/off with the bike

Thanks but it's the other connector being referred to ... there are two connectors in the photo ... the one that is closest to the camera and hanging a down a bit lower is the CANBUS connector that you can connect a GPS/SATNAV to .... it's the other connector that is still a mystery and we're trying to track down a definitive answer... it has two pins... I've seen some suggestions it is a diagnostics connector but I don't think that is correct. cheers

The BMW sat nav has two connectors, could it be for that ?

Its to connect to the charcoal canister for the American market. Petrol fumes go through this from the tank vent - it's a California thing.

I don't think so .... this pic is from a bike up to 2008... halfway through 2008 they changed to a new release... my GS is 'R1200GS 08' as opposed to '2008 R1200GS' For the 'R1200GS 08' the CAN bus cable has moved to just behind the oil cooler, neatly taped on top of the wiring loom... very easy to miss... But the mystery plug remains in the same location as the picture in this post. Also note that the CANBUS connector has a blank connetor plugged into it that you must remove if you want to use it. The mystery connector has no cover on it.... as you can see in the picture the mystery connector also has a sping clip on it. My assumption is that if they were both for the GPS then the would have moved both connectors on the next model? ... just a guess!

So they've worked out how to send petrol fumes down a pair of wires... impressive :) ..... So if this is correct then I guess this would connect to a sensor in the cannister I guess to monitor when in needs replacing ?

OK ... I'm not convinced by this reply either ... I've just seached a couple of posts on the charcosl cannisters and from what I could see they only seem to have three hoses connected, couldnt see any references to any electrical connections to the cannister which included photos. The posts also mention the cannister is on the LH side of the bike ... this connector is on the RH side.

Well remain unconvinced, do some more research and then come back here and tell me I'm correct. From '08 onwards the connector and canister is on the right.

I take the beginning of your reply as sarcastic and undeserved when someone is trying to be helpful.

Yeah, Bob's just helped you out :nenau

As it's canbus, you can still draw current from it and it'll switch power off soon after the key is removed.

Just to help a little bit more; the part it connects to is called the Evaporative Purge Valve. It connects to the Engine management unit - nothing to do with the CANbus.

Yep, I have one of these hanging down on my 09 GS/SE. Maybe for Aux lights?

Hi Bob...apologies if my attempt at humor is taken out of context... it certainly was not meant to offend and appreciate your advice. I have seen numerous posts all of which have different takes on the connector... a couple adament that it is a connector for diagnostics.
So if it also a CANBus connector I wonder why it is different to the CANBUS for the GPS ...apart from the fact it is a very different connector ...it seems to only have 2 pins versus three on the GPS plugs. I think I may go investigate the CANBUS technical specs if I can track them down. This is just making me more curious!
Thanks again ... cheers ...David

Hi David - The CAN bus is just a pair of wires that connect the computers together; it stands for Controller Area Network. It doesn't control things like lights and sockets (as many think). Control of these is done by the likes of the ZFE unit and BMS K. The plug under discussion controls the Purge Valve of the venting system (American Market).

If get your hands on a wiring diagram you will see that it is an output from the BMS K unit. Pre '08 model year this was on the LH side frame. Since '08 it is at the RH side front. The GS has a space under the tank in this area to accommodate the canister while the GSA has a cutout in the tank for the same purpose

Is it me or...

... this square black socket looks like ...

Is that the Accelerator Module in the picture? I would have to go and check but I think mine is not fitted that way. I put it in line with the cable that goes to the airbox sensor. Does'nt go anywhere near the throttle bodies. :nenau

Ahhhh - must get my eyes tested. Just noticed the cables not connected to anything. Sorry!

Thanks for the input everyone, I don't think we have the answer yet though?

Charcoal Cannister connector.........no mention of any electrical connections here: Charcoal Canister Removal or visible in the photos. Also seems strange that as the CC is mounted at the rear of the bike why would the connector be dangling up front by the oil cooler/horn?

Aux lights connector....could be, is the photo a GSA? Connector for the optional aux lighting?

It serves no useful purpose at all.

It was put in by BuMW as a Bavarian joke, to promote endless discussion on UKGSer.

What is the point of asking a question, then after the correct answer is posted by someone (Bob), refuse to accept it. :blast

Grief, this is turning into one of those posts! :augie

May as well ring up Bracknel and ask the question, then when you get the answer "it's to do with the Charcoal Canister thing" say, "Nah, I don't believe you".

This is the connector on the evaporative control valve, which is part of the Charcoal Canister thing and associated tubing: :mmmm

Ok keep your hair on..........I can't help being stupid (sometimes) :aidan ........I see now, hadn't looked at the ECV thingy/missed the earlier post re the ECV :thumb

Thanks Bob :D

Andy - why don't you think we have the answer?

I've emphasised the answer to your query (from my previous post)
