Went out for a little ride yesterday on the X and it was going great until while accelerating in 3rd gear the engine stalled and started again, like a massive hesitation that caused the bike to suddenly dive. Very awkward moment.

Then as I was slowing down for a set of lights it stalled again. Turned off the ignition, turned it back on and started but would only idle. Tried to rev it and it wouldn't rev and 9 times out 10 would stall. If I managed to massage it to get the revs higher it would be Ok and by slipping the clutch and keeping it revving high I could limp along. This didn't last long before it cut out completely an wouldn't even start.

Anybody else had anything like this happen?

Only similar thing I've had was the ignition switch wire rubbed and corroded but the not revving makes me doubt it that.

Don't know, but sounds electrical.
I'd start by checking all electrical connections, and doing a tps reset (thread on this somewhere)
Good luck!

I did the TPS reset straight away and made no difference.

If it had a Carb I think I would be looking for a blocked pilot jet. Might be wrong but feels like fuel issue rather than electrical. It's just the way when trying to raise the revs it feels and sounds like fuel starvation.

Take off the throttle position sensor and check it's not full of shite,
my last Xmoto did this.
Ohh and check you have the plug leads on the right way round.
( Don't ask ! :blast )

Plugs the right way as been running fine for the last 2000 miles.

Where is the TPS sensor and is it easy to remove to clean?

Think this is the black box on the side of the throttle body.

There is also a black solenoid that operates the bypass circuit for the idle as well, and this can also clog with shite and cause idling problems. Would take some photos, but won't have the bike back until october...

Sounds like it might be a good idea to strip and clean the throttle body as a matter of course, and also check the rubber manifold for any splits while you are at it.

Also worth checking the air flow sensor in the air box, make sure it's plugged in and working properly. I'm not actually sure how you would do this, and i have never needed to, but i'm sure there must be a way (or just replace?)

It sounds like fuel to me too. Is your fuel tank breather blocked or the fuel pipe from the tank compresseed?

Mikecbrxx on the move.....

First thing I looked at was the breather pipe and that was clear.

How are you Mike? Might be planning another trip over soon to see Baz and get my suspension tweaked.

Let me know when. You have a bed here if you want it. We can grab a few beers in centrum.

Been having a mess around and can't seem to find anything wrong, when it suddenly dawned on me that it was running fine at the weekend when the fuel light came on.

My brother put some fuel in from a can but I didn't ride it again until the day I went out and it broke down.

Drained out the old fuel completely and put in some fresh stuff. Started up and idled ok, then built up the revs then appears to be running fine again.

Haven't done a proper road test yet cos its been pissing down all day.

I'll keep you posted!

Went for a road test today and everything was fine until I started to open it up then it cut out and died completely. Wouldn't start or even fire up but smelt of fuel from the exhaust.

20 mins later it starts and runs again although it didn't feel as if it was running properly and every so often a small backfire. Opened it up again and died again. about another 20 mins and starts again but not very responsive on the throttle.

I decided to check the plugs and the gaps were a little bit on the small side although they both had a nice blue spark, so opened them up. Apart from that I haven't been able to find anything wrong.

HELP!!

Checked the valve clearances and all within tolerances.

Went into BMW dealer to ask if there was a fuel filter in the tank that could be blocked and was told no only a gauze on the bottom that you just blow out and put back.

Took out the fuel pump today and guess what? There is a metal replaceable fuel filter in the tank!!

Also recommended to clean the injector which I have done. Just need to get a new fuel filter tomorrow.

Is the in tank fuel filter a replacable item? IIRC colebach posted on ADVrider that he tried to get a spare, but couldn't find one listed.

It's the same sort of filter used on most german cars, but trying all the cross referencing and even the mahle website and nothing comes up.
