When putting the suspension to its off road position the front forks don't rise slowly they suddenly shoot up to its upper limit like the pressure builds up and then let's go.
Any help to the reasons why.

Sorry can't say why but on the two occasions I set mine to this position it did that too. It drops in the same manner when switching back to road use.

Lack of use causing the piston to stick. Mine is the same so I now run it through to max every month or so.

ESA front suspension

Mine used to do what is described in this blog. Used the off road settings two or three times a year and changed to set for luggage a couple of times but mostly left the settings alone.
My recent experience with ESA is a failed front unit (on 2010 GSA twin cam). Sprayed ACF oil before winter and thought the drops of oil off the unit was ACF until I noticed the oil was green rather than ACF red. The front end started feeling vague and the rebound was rather loose.
At service last week it was confirmed the unit was leaking and has failed.
Replacement from BMW is £930 + Vat!
However, thanks to the boys and girls at Williams Manchester an appeal to BMW Germany for "good will" has resulted in no charge for the unit (only labour to pay).

Lessons learned - 1. check and use ESA more often. 2. Respect to the Williams crew.
