Front wheel bearings

Is it possible too remove the front wheel bearings (which are in good condition) from an alloy wheel without damaging them ? I realise i will require seals or is it just too much hastle and i should replace them anyway. Wheel is being chemicaly stripped and powder coated.

Nope they have to be knocked out with a big punch n hammer,even if you could given the cost of new bearings why risk old ? after you've spent £s on repaint :blast

All new seals and bearings ordered and wheels away to powder coat should have em back on friday.

Clean away any coating that's got into the bearing bore or risk the new bearing(s) getting jammed halfway in.

stick the new bearings in the freezer the night before you want to fit them and warm the hubs up with a hot air gun they will fit so much more easily.

Ive taken them out and reused them many times with out any problems.

warm up the wheel much easier to remove, also use a rawl bolt to save the hassle of knocking them about with a drift, :thumby:

I shan't be doing it, but what a good and ingenious idea to use a rawl bolt. :thumby:

I struggled to get much temperature into the wheels but heat & cold def help. Just don't get the bearing jammed 1/2 way. Any vestiges of paint will not help make it any easier.

In the end i had to weld one of the inside races so that i had something to put a punch against. The spacer in the middle wouldnt move sideways to allow catching the edge of the bearing. It was ok once the first side was out but new bearings and seals being fitted anyway. Is the wheel spacer the same on wire wheels as on the Alloys ?

But because you still have to pull or tap them it strains the middle seperate from outside,thus causing poss damage to bearing surface they will prematurely wear out,cos risk of chipping or denting bearing balls or surface :blast

It was a no brainer really, £33 from Motoworks 2 x seals and 2 x bearings post inc and at least i know they will be good for a long time.

New bearings and seals arrived this morning. Just in time to fit to these bad boys i got back from powder coating today

Use a round find to cut a 3mm deep groove in one end of the spacer bore. Then you'll have space to get the punch on the bearing next time they need replacing. It only need one good thump to loosen the spacer but as we know it's almost impossible without that new groove.

No worries.

You never know how soon the job might need doing again.

No need to file right down - just enough to let a drift connect properly with the bearing inner race.
