Engine on my 2008 GS has developed a rattle which I think could be a Cam Chain Tensioner. Looking at the Haynes manual to replace both of them seems to be beyond my limited skills so I was wondering whether anyone could give me an idea of how much it is going to cost to get them replaced. As you would expect taking it to a main agent is definitely not on the cards. Thanks.

Its very easy to change both of them. Right is 2 minutes work and you need only a 17 wrench. Left one its a little bit difficult.

Thanks saltman. Thats given me a bit of hope as the Haynes Manual goes into great detail about needing specialist tools etc. One of my previous bikes was a Blackbird and it was really easy to change a cam chain tensioner on it. Love my GS in comparison though as its got so much more character.

What year & mileage?

What oil is in it currently & when was it last serviced ? what make oil filter btw? Have you had the tappets / endfloat checked recently

there not the quietest of bikes at the best of times ;) they can get noisy in hot weather and using 10/40 oil 20/50 mineral oil is recommended if i recall

(although you can use semi synth)

Mine sounded like a tractor until it was given a good oil change tappets & endfloat checked & reset as well as the throttle body's re balanced an stepper motors reset re synced

Post up a video of the rattle and let the collective diagnose it remotely (WFH as it were). Don't just jump in and change tensioners.

My 2008 was making a right clatter on one side when hot and it was the endfloat adjustment. Quiet when cold and noisy when hot and the oil got thinner.

If you can adjust the tappets you can do the endfloat.

If i recall , the rod that the tappets run on can be loosened and and adjusted ( endfloat)

you do the endfloat, and then the tappets

The haynes manual is a help

There is a good thread on this site somewhere that goes through it in detail but of course I can't find it now:blast. The guy in this video checks the end float about 10 minutes in (he calls it Rocker Arm Play or something). Just make sure you are comfortable with the procedure as there are 4 fixings to loosen, 3 Torx and 1 hex nut which is a head mounting and has a procedure for correct torque. The tolerance for endfloat is quite big but I think it will make more noise at the outer limit.

Dave do you know I was thinking of doing that even though I think he is a long way from Eastbourne. He's probably forgotten more than I know so its making sense to PM him.

Thanks Santa 2008 36000 miles I last filled it with 10/40 Filter was from Motorworks , cannot be more specific as we have just painted the garage floor and it needs to dry and swmbo has already chewed my ear off for going out there earlier.. Noise like a tractor so true and it took me years to venture over from 4 cylinders because they sound so much smoother. Never regretted it though. Did the tappets on my previous one so thats easy to do, and initially I thought the rattle was tappets needing adjustment until I diagnosed it could be tensioners causing the rattle. Just going to also reply to John who as you can read says doing the end float is easy enough. Throttle bodies and stepper motors make me think I will need that tool to set them up. This is definitely sounding like a job for Steptoe to me. Thanks again.

Thanks John posting a video sounds a good idea. I will try and do that when I am allowed back in the garage. As soon as I read end float I thought that was beyond my capability but sounds like it might not be.

Thank you I will try that.
Its taken me hours to do but as suggested by John I recorded a video earlier today. Great excuse for a ride over to 1066 cafe Robertsbidge as well.

I didnt think it sounded that bad, mine sounded far worse lol ill see if i can find the video

Give it an oil change 20/50 use a genuine mahle filter and see how it sounds

Thanks Santa for both your opinion of how noisy it sounds and your other advice.
