Roads today were filthy around the North West, but this still doesn’t look good…

Nationwide account opened in December, first £13 paid in January and AA attended this with first class service. Best £13 I’ve spent in a while but it’s now sitting the corner of the garage and reflecting on its behaviour today. It was running so sweetly, right up to the point where it wasn’t.

Ouch.

I'd offer to help with it but a) I'm on the other side of the world and b) I'm a complete muppet with spanners.

Hope it's not as bad as it looks.

@ Disaster Area...to be fair, you have your own problems right now, starting with the Harbour Bridge being shut down, 11m waves in Bay of Islands and the Coromandel being declared a Zombie Zone.....(Unless you are in Canterbury, of course!)

Thanks for the thought DA :D

I’ve done one of these repairs before but it was a while ago and I still have the repaired FD somewhere in the garage as it was the original 1150 one that I replaced with this 1100S one.

Looking at the replacement crown wheel bearing options, Motorworks look good at £54, but I’m curious if anyone knows:
- what’s the difference between them and the versions that cost £150 and upwards?
- has anyone tried the sealed rather than open versions and do these offer any advantages/disadvantages?

Sorry for hijacking the thread Paul. But where did you get that hugger to fit the 17” wheels ?

Like most of the mods I’ve done, eBay.co.uk or eBay.de - It’s an Ilmberger but I think I only paid about £25 for it… They were around €280 new.

i use m/works one , on my third , i change them every 50k miles.

Thanks. That’s what I used last time but I’m curious whether a sealed one might do the job better/for longer or whether it might not be suited in some way I’ve not imagined. I can get a sealed one for very little more than M/works are charging.

Just out of curiosity, do you know how many miles were on that bearing?

Afraid not… I fitted it secondhand about 7yrs ago so had no idea of previous mileage and my GS has only done 67k from new (albeit quite a few have been at high speed)

On my first 1150 the bearings seals etc were replaced at 24,000 miles by an independent using genuine parts (they had already been done in its first year as a warranty job), The main bearing failed 1100 miles later in Austria , a local BMW main dealer repaired it but said that there was damage to the shaft on the bevel where the inner needle bearing fitted )probably removed with a cold chisel or an angle grinder) .

The bike got me home but the new bearings were on the way out 1500 miles later.

Bought a brand new Bevel box from a company that was converting r1150r models into disabled trikes (£120 off E Bay instead of nearly £900 new) , it was still on the bike when I got rid of it and I believe still fitted and untouched at 65,000 miles when it was last sold .

Picked up a used bevel box as spares for £40 from E Bay that had done 97,000 miles and had never been touched but the owner had fitted a new one just in case (when I stripped it the bearings were in excellent condition )

I've been wondering about this. My bike has 77,000 miles on it now much of those on bumpy roads and hasn't had the bearing replaced. Wait until it goes pop? or try preventitive maintenance. I change the bevel oil every year (its a 2002 bike I've had since 2004), if that makes any difference and theres only ever a very small amount of grey mush on the magnetic drain plug.

Personally I’d get it changed. Once it’s done you know it’s going to be ok for a few years more. It’s a bit of a gamble every time you go out if it’s an old one with a lot of miles on it. Peace of mind innit. :thumb2

I'd change both of the bearings Marcus just to be sure. My original 1150 let go in Colorado in 2010 at about 75 or 76k miles and my present GS went last summer at just under 70k so I'd say you're in the failure zone at 77k.
You could also take the opportunity to change the paralever bearings too or change them to Nushings.

Thanks folks. Think I’ll change both bearings and seals. What could possibly go wrong

Well now you've got me worrying. :(
My Bike has 78k miles.
I put nushings in about 4k miles ago but have never looked further in than that. In fact i'm not altogether sure i know WTF youz are talking about! :D

Please tell me that because it's an R850R and not a GS that it will be fine.

. . ... won't it? :nenau

Hi Marc it's the big crown wheel bearing which is a caged ball bearing and the inner is a tapered roller bearing. I reckon they fail because there is a turning moment on the rear wheel because of the single sided swing arm. The big caged roller bearing fails most commonly and you end up with a mess like in the picture above.

Pointless just renewing bearings, correct shimming needs to be done as well.Something that was suspect at factory build, leading to early failures.
