clunky final drive

hi all, know somth like this has been discussed before but just wondering on a bit of clarification on the issue - i have noticed in mine (2006 model) when at low speeds i get quite a bit of clonks from the FD.

with the bike on the centre stand and 1st gear engaged the engine ticks over at about 2.5K rpm and you can hear a very distinct clunking from the final drive gear, anything above 3 - 3.5K and its fairly silent.... is this a normal "feature" ???

It's not a good idea to run the bike in gear on the centrestand, the components are not under load and could result in premature wear.

Regarding the clunking is it when you shut off the throttle? If you are not smooth with the throttle operation this can also cause what you have described...it's a quirk of the boxer twin I am afraid.
 
Point taken, poorly described, what I meant to say was that the components will not be meshing correctly. When the bike is on the centre stand the components will not be aligned as well as when there is weight on the rear wheel.
 
I`d get it checked out if I were you.

I had a rumble through the pegs last week in Belgium which dissappeared and I put it down to road surface. Rumbles reappeared near Cirencester followed by some dreaded clunks which was the u/j behind the gearbox failing:blast
 
On the few occasions I have run mine in gear on the centre stand, I find the noise, clunks etc quite alarming. However, it's never turned into anything more serious. The angle between gerbox and shaft is relatively extreme and while the shaft and/or UJ should be able to cope with the occasional "topping out", it's not what it is designed to do.

The will also be lots of "slop" when there is no load. If you run a chain drive bike on closed throttle in gear on the centre stand, the noise is even worse.
 
Running it in gear on its centrestand will not tell you anything really wrt noise.

The drivetrain has 'backlash'. This can be felt if you put it in first gear, then turn the rear wheel one way then the other. It isn't locked in position is it? This is because there has to be a certain clearance to allow parts to mesh.

Now if you simply put the bike on the centrestand and put it in gear the lumpiness of the engine will make the drive train oscillate on this backlash. Up the speed and you'll have sufficient friction to keep the drivetrain meshed in one direction, hence the noise will decrease.

What you should worry about is any noises on the move. 'Clonks' when taking up drive is quite normal.
 
ta for the replies, i do get a clunk sometimes when engaging/disengaging the cluch but as i belive the GBox is fairly agricultural im not worried about this.

i understand there is backlash considering the shafts etc, its just i didnt expect to hear clunking when riding at low rpm..... eg 2.5k in 1st or second (filtering thru traffic etc) and given the mixed replies above can someone on the next ride please do the same and report back further?

As others have said, it's quite normal and is due to backlash in the drive chain.

When filtering in low gears with constant acceleration / deceleration it is almost impossible not to get the odd clunk.

You will find that you develop a riding style that, through using a combination of delicate throttle control and clutch 'feathering', minimises any 'clonks' but you'll never stop it happening completly.

Any way, it's all part of the MWB experiance and adds to the charecterful nature of the bikes :thumb

Hi Andreas - thanks 4 the reply... constant acceleration / deceleration i can understand colnking, but at a constant speed( but only at low rpm) is my issue.... :rob

anything above 3 k and its silent, im prob worrying too much because as an an engineeer i dont like to hear clonks ..... :eek:

At low revs/speed it's very easy to load and unload the transmission either through an unsteady throttle or minor surging through the FI system.

Trouble is, it's hard to diagnose without a experiancing it first hand - still think it sounds 'normal' though.

Maybe get a test ride on another R1200 at your local dealer in order to put your mind at rest :nenau

they didnt rattle my cage at all, as long as it all works then im not bothered if there are some noises - its learning what is normal and thats the point of my post.

if your input was constructive in any way then i would have taken it seriously but as all of your comments so far on this site are highly neagative with no constructive value whatsoever i call it as i see it.

i know one thing... i did a lot of research before my puschase and knew about the issues involved, drive seals etc and accepted that......

sounds like you didnt do yours.....

anyway enough of this waste of time as u will not recieve any further replies from myself.

8798 miles........Final drive starting to show signs of grating and sidewise play.
Dealer says its not bad at moment.
I wrote to BMW complaints and they insisted dealer replaces immediately!

11187 miles........Final drive outboard seal leaking oil, throwing oil onto back tyre........Dealers attitude,"oh that outboard one is just a 5 minute job to fix, good job it aint the inner, chuckle chuckle"

11190........While in for outboard final drive seal mechanic notices oil leak from gearbox.......then told the bike needs stripping in half to have a new seal fitted.

12000 miles....front engine cover and wheels looks terrible..paint and alloy flaking of everywhere.....got replacement taken off showroom model.

Bmw dealer jokes that I ought to move in to their showroom as I am there so much.......I dont think this is a laughing matter do you.

14200 miles.........up for sale and hopefuly go next week.

YOU WONT SEE ME ANYMORE IN YOUR SHOWROOM. GOOD RIDDANCE BMW, YOU ARE SIMPLY CRAP IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.

well mate i really dont want to be rude but if you hate the bike so much :stopbeing and polluting other peoples threads with inane comments, make your own stating the issues u have had in a constructive manner so maybe it will be of a benefit to others...... thats the way to get some form of respect instead of spamming various parts of the site with tosshhhh, because at the moment the majority think you are a cock.....

anyway i hope that whatever u end up buying will see u many happy years of service, and i of course assume you will tell the next lucky owner all the exciting times and enjoyment u have had with the bike :augie cheers me dear!
