Anyone else got a rattle from the instrument area of their R1150GS?
Every time I go over a bump it sounds like a box of tools behind the dash panel.
Any ideas what I should look for apart from a box of tools?

Are you sure the noise is coming from the instrument panel? I would check the front brake disks. Grab the disk and try moving it side to side, if it's loose and rattles then the wave washers have corroded and need replacing. I had the same problem with my R1150R, new set of washers cost me £8 from local BMW dealer.

If you look into the opening where the back of your lights are etc, there are two metal tabs that attach the support sub frame steel loop to the "cockpit" using 2 x 6mm steel bolts, the tabs frequently broke off on the earlier bikes, you dont see it while stationary, I think they reinforced them later, they can be welded in situ, but I took mine off and had it welded and repainted.

+1

Or the same bolts mentioned above have fallen out.

Bloody hell you guys are good.
Welshman and Steptoe the left bracket was cracked and not that easy to see. A fine line of rust gave it away.
A few bits of scrap cardboard to protect the bike from weld splattter, a bucket of water with a rag in it and just in case the fire extinguisher on stand by and I am ready to mig it together.
The upside down photo is after welding but should give an idea where it cracked, my apologies to those offended by my welding. It is purely operator issues not the mig.,

Just got to do a road test tomorrow to confirm no rattle.
And I fitted the WP front shock today. Got to get that set up too:thumb
