On sunday the 5th of August (yesterday) I happened to be the first "first aider" as it were to arrive at the scene of a head on collision between a motorcyclest and renualt clio on the A542. Very near where we met in May for the Llangollen event. Details of the incident and thoughts at the time here!

The experience dramatically reminded me, how long it has been since my previous first aid course (nearly 2years) and emphasised the worth of doing another. This and the early indications are, the accident was not due to excess speed, but rather poor technical control of a bike on a left hand bend. Have driven me to arrange a training package deal with Bike Safe in north wales for club members and any bikers interested.

I have spoken with Paul Cheshire at Bike Safe in North Wales and arranged a discount deal with possible two options for recognised ciritificated specialised first aid training (FBOS) and some bike safe courses at discounted prices.

The discount prices are reliant on a group of 12 people. If we cannot make 12, then prices may go up a little, but we need a minimum of 6 confirmed to book the time slot.

I hope you will see it as a great oppurtunity to join a few fellow GS riders for a great weekend and come away better prepared and better educated.

Option 1) £65 per person for entire weekend. Sat 29 - Sun 30 Sept 2007
Full Weekend Course: Saturday 29th Sept & Sunday 30th Sept.
Saturday: Full day rider observation and bike safe education course. Improve your road skills, with police and ex police volenteer riders and observers. Will include lots cracking roads and a social lunch stop.

Sunday : "First Biker On The Scene" (FBOS) First Aid Training: A specialised recognised course, which is cirtified for 2 years on successful completion. More FBOS Details here! Might just help you save someones life!

< I might organise a Saturday night evening meal/responcible social session dependant on what people want to do for accomodation>

OPtion 2) £29 per person sunday FBOS only : Sun 30 Sept 2007
Sunday 30th Sept - Single Day FBOS training course and qualification. Will last most of the day, comfy cloths will be required. Learn how to properly treat/deal with an injured biker.

Location: North Wales : Saturdays riding in option one will be in the north wales area, so lovely roads and weather should be good too. So even if you dont come specifically for the course, you will still get to ride some of the best roads in the country.

The FBOS training will probably take place at the bike safe offices in north wales police hq colwyn bay, but that location could change.

The prices above are discounted considerably and have been arranged personally by me with Paul Cheshire of Bike Safe. So really need to get 12 people to show that we as riders and a club are responcible, arent too old to learn and are prepared to help when others need it.

The prices are solely for the course operation costs, as Bike Safe is a non profit organisation. Accomodation, food and drinks are not included. BUT if there is sufficient interest I may be able to look into discounted accom for the friday & sat nights for people.

The above dates have been chosen, to get the ball started. If no one can make those dates, others later in oct are possible. BUT I am working on these for now. I may organise further courses on the shock chance I get more than 12 people seriously interested.

So if your seriously interested and willing to travel to north wales for either the full weekend or sunday, then please reply stating which options you would like, you can state both. As the bookings will strictly be first come first serve. The first pption to get 12 replies will be the one we go with.

I have promised to Let Paul know at bike safe by monday the 13th which option we want.

So please, please, come along have a great cheap weekend and go home better educated and equipped for the roads we ride.

John

Bookings
Booking1) John Woolley - 01244 549688 : Option1 or Option2

Edit: This course is available to all bikers and i will post a link up on advrider shortly.

If I'm free that weekend then count me in, but I'm not quite sure if you want the names here and you forward them or we book direct...I'm a bit thick like that.

We'll be able to have a piss up saturday night:beer:, try and ride home then blast back again sunday:blast

Sorry..

If you able to confirm your free and able to attend those dates, then please post your name up with a contact number or email. If people dont wish to post a number or email, then pm them to me, with your handle and real name.

Final fee will depend on the numbers, but max will be around £85 per head for option1 thats based on a min group size of 6.

Once the numbers are sortted and final price per person confirmed, i will post the payment details and confirmed first 12 people/option choice. Payment will be made direct to Bike Safe to avoid any complications/confusion.

And yes, we can have a "sencible" social.. you will need your brain for the first aid session.. as well as your license.. ;)

OH Yes, valid license and insurance cirtificates are usually required to be shown before the rider education course. I will confirm this still the case with Paul in the morning regarding option1.

I really want to do this course but I am away on a 2 week tour that weekend.

Any dates before? in the North West.

Single day would be best for me to start with.

Thanks for putting the work in with this, I think everyone should know the basics at the very least.:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

Dates..

Flipgfly no worries.
The Bike Safe guys like Paul are all volenteers, so they work 9 to 5 during the week, then run the courses at weekend. So they book up fast during the summer, but I if there are others like your self, things can be done.

As it stand the first available full weekend was the 29/30. If however there is enough interest (min 6 individuals) then I can try and arrange a seperate one dayer FBOS later in Oct possibley either 13/14th or 20/21. But for now am concentrating on the 29/30 as I have to make commitments and I dont want to let them down/or waste their weekends.

Bike Safe in north wales are struggling to fight the "camera" attitude and are all about education and safety. As a scheme they are constantly battling to keep them selfs going and help support the "education" approach.

So by attending your not only helping your self, but your also helping them to help others.

Paul actually was out on an observed ride when he arrived at the scene of the accident, i was at... I actually think its a shame he is no longer a serving officer.

Did the bikesafe weekend last month with Gwent police, it was very informative and a good laugh at times, would recommend it to all, riding techniques and first aid ( could save yours or a friends life ) and you get motorcycle roadcraft (the police riders handbook) which is full of stats and tips and upto 10% off your insurance when you get your certificate. So what you waiting for.:thumb

Done it before..

If you have done your BikeSafe already, then why not consider it as a "refresher" option.

I'd really like to do this but can't around that date.

If you do organise any weekends next year, I'd be interested.

Paul

Yes I also would really like to do this, especially the first aid bit, did bikesafe course last year and after first aid bit of that wanted a bit more than time allowed then!
sorry cannot do dates at end september (holidays!!!!) so if running course towards end october would be up for it
cheers and thanks for taking trouble to set all this up :thumb2

Course Postponed ! ! !

The Course has been Postponed for now!!

Sadly I have not had enough interest to make the weekend sept28/29 viable to retain the temporary booking for the club.

However as the first aid course seems to be of greater interest than the combined bike safe/first aid course. I am now trying to arrange a sunday first aid course (FBOS) for sunday 28 Oct 2007, again need a minimum of 6 people with max of 12.

This depends on the availability of the Paramedic Instructor to give the course. I will confirm the new date and details in a new thread once the Paramedic has confirmed his availability. In the meantime I will contact those people who have PM'd me to let them know of the changes.

Thanks to those who have shown there interest thus far. I hope the possible october date will prove more convenient for everyone and sorry to Dave etc for the postponement.
