► Centre and side stands

Went to CW to get then 1150's serviced, and while there had a look at the 800gs.
Have to say i do like it. Nice bike.
But the thing i first noticed when giving it a look over was the RUST on the center stand.

Would of thought BMW could have come up with a solution to this.
And i would of liked to see it available with more colour choices.
Other than that...nice.Sounds good for a standard can as well.
 
Looks like some strong, black, rubber sheathing is called for - anyone know where to get some? :confused:

Flipant answer would be durex :o

Problem will be getting something that is road proof and isn't too slippery. If it damages easily it'll retain the moisture and the rust really will set in :( Maybe heat shrink?
 
I was thinking Black nylon split tube. Repaint the rusty scuffs before fitting. Sit back & enjoy.

Anyone know where you might get Black Nylon tubing?
 
I had a go on one for three hours on Friday - very impressed with the handling & power - really good fun to ride on the road.

Still prefer the 1200 for now though.

I was a little surprised at the wobbly brake reservoir mount bodge-up though....wondered how long.....

With regard to the stand, the /5's had a tubular centre stand and I used to weld a flat along the contact point once the tube had worn through so only that point showed wear - I must agree that a better design would be easy though.
 
It does look like an old air-head centre stand, doesn't it.

They had the habit of rusting through from the inside, once the plastic bungs at the ends fell out, and the bike would fall over. A cure was to squirt underseal/old engine oil/rust inhibitor up the 'ole and keep a regular check the the bungs hadn't fallen out.

No doubt TT or Wunderlich will bring out a better design of stand in the future.

Needless to say I have not ordered a centre stand with my GS.
 
Am thinking I might cancel the center stand on mine and get an aftermarket one, it does look very rust prone.

Motorworks have a Hepco&Becker one on list but no photos or stock yet.

What's the general concensus on H&B, I thought I read someone somewhere on here insinuating they were not the best for luggage?
 
And the side stand?

Anyone tried parking off road with it? Bit more thought needed in the stands department all round methinks.
Mine's in the country, going to pick it up soon.

The stand could definitely do with a bit more design effort as I found out when I put it on the centre stand to clean and then tried to rotate the front wheel a bit at a time to clean it (as I usually do on all bikes I have owned).

The considerable weight the stand leaves on the front wheel means that doing this rocks the bike back and off the centre stand.. Ensure you have a friend nearby to catch it if you decide to try this at home.

Having not got the big bulky centre stand can any
tell me which Paddock stand is a good one to buy
and are they all universal fit to rear of the bikes
 
A quick browse through the Hein Gericke catalog show a lot of options.

As for one that will specifically fit the 800GS, dunno, but as it's a more conventional swing arm unlike the 800S/ST.

Rear paddock stands come in 2 types, one using hooks to lift the bike using bobbbins screwed into pre-threaded mounting points in the swing arm (which I'm pretty certain the 800 does not have) the other using U shaped cups which the swing arm rests on.

They are pretty universal as the cups or hooks can be adjusted for different bikes.

As for what make Micron do a pretty decent one for reasonable money but there are lots to choose from.
 
I agree it doesn't look very pretty for sure Walt, but I wouldn't like to be without it. I'm not keen on Scotoilers so the stand makes spraying and adjusting the chain soooo easy!

I think you have really come down to the crux of it Micky ...it depends on whether you have an auto oiling system, or whether you manually spray every morning when out on the road.
 
I didn't order my one with the centre stand as I hate the look of it
I agree the oiling is a bit of a problem I am now looking
for a paddock stand to use at home I suppose if I was
out in the middle of know where then spray and move the bike about
until all chain oiled as for adjustment stick some bricks under the bash plate I suppose :rolleyes:
 
when changing tyre after puncture during trip in the midle of nowhere somewhare in GOBI desert, center stand is BIG help :))

BMW tuned center stand so you can change both tyres without problems (when changing fron one, weight goes to the rear tyre and bike stays, same the opposite way). It s still posiible to change tyre without center stand but needs bit thinking... Sometimes not possible without partner.

So answer is if u travel in EU like countries, there is allways help. If you travel to the east, asia or africa, it s a must :)
 
The last bike I had without a centre stand, I used a offroad stand at home and a piece of hardwood with a vee in the end that I stored under the seat the rest of the time, worked well:thumb2

Is that right Jarax, i didn't know that.:thumb2. I was wondering about front wheel extraction & what i as going to do about Keeping the forks off the ground. :confused:

Yeah I am intrigued by that, coz on the centrestand there is a LOT of weight on the front wheel - so much so that its almost impossible to rotate the front wheel without substantial force to lift it.
 
Some of the BMW models are so well balanced around the centre stand that it is actually possible to balance them with both wheels off the floor - not sure this applies to the F800GS models, but I have seen someone do it with the R1150GS just depends on whether they kept the same design ethos for later models I guess.

Also things like luggage systems and crash bar fitting will change the balance but usually not enough to mess with the basic idea of take front wheel out weight of rear wheel will balance bike backards
 
The F800GS sits heavy on the front wheel when on the centre stand, so rear wheel work is a breeze :thumb

To take the front wheel out you're gonna need to chock the front end up :eek:

Did tyre change this weekend :) F 800 is not balanced around center stand as my previous 1150 :)) Weight goes front!!!

Center stand is big help although. We also did the same job on Africa twin without centerstand :mcgun almost impossible if you are single, tough work when done in two persons.
