Like most bike horns, the 800's is too wimpy for my taste. Has anyone fitted a more powerful one I wonder? If so where did you put it?

Getting the panels off is easy enough, undo the torx screws:
- two long in the top left-hand side of the 'tank', one short near the key,
- two medium length under the beak,
- the screw to the screen, then
- two (short) others.

Leave the indicator in place and drop the panel to expose the horn.

The horn connection is CANbus and rather than snip the cable I've ordered the connector from Nippy Norman.

The horn won't fit using the existing 80mm bracket as it needs to be recessed further inwards to avoid fouling the panel, so a longer bracket (probably 120mm) is going to be needed.

Tim,
Thanks for the pictures. Unfortunately, the 800's horn is quite differently placed! It lives just in front of the forks and occupies a space in a plastic panel which looks as if it's main purpose in life is to stop crap being thrown up from the wheel. One could probably remove the existing horn without removing any panels but even though that Stebel is neat enough, I don't think it will fit the circular cut out in the afore-mentioned panel. I think I'll get one anyway and play about a bit to see where it might best go.

BTW, will the existing wiring drive the Stebel do you know? In the past I have fitted a relay for other makes of air horn.

Yeah I got the Magnum for my 800. Although it says for the 800GS on the NN site, I couldn't get it to fit. The Magnum isn't exactly round, there is a square knobble that prevents it sitting in the hole properly.

Also, although I got the CANbus connector, the wires are still push-fit onto the horn. Because these are mounted on the top, the wires coming off them foul part of the bracing as you turn the bars left/right. Better if you could have ninety-degree spade connectors.

In any case, once fitted I wasn't happy with it so I replaced the stock. I can sell with a ready-made canbus connector :D

Yes, the original wiring will hopefully drive the Stebel without problems, there was no need for a relay on my 1200GSA. The CANbus connector is just a neat way of avoiding cutting into the wiring loom.

Make sure the opening on the horn is facing downwards or even backwards, otherwise in wet weather you'll get a strangled/drowned squark rather than a blast. :) How do I know? :(

I WILL persevere, a louder horn is an important part of my safety regime, along with ultra bright lighting.

Stiebles horn

I got one on my 1150, brilliant5 got it infront of the steering head a real fiddle
to get it in though. The fixing lug on these is crap, it iis designed to hook on a bolt ideal for cars but not so good on abike. Have a good lok at this bracket as it is possible for the thing to fall off over rough terrain. I tied mine on with a few cable ties just in case so at least it wont get lost! it really is loud, dont test in the garage with your ears any where near it as it hurts!!. Wakes up car drivers but not much use against Peruvian Dogs! (possibly the language). Do it worth a try.
dave ( I got the horn) GS.

f800gs and magnum horn

Fitted the magnum horn from Nippy Normans today
works a treat :thumb

I have done a word document on fitting it with pictures but don't know how to post on here I think its to big so If anyone wants a copy just pm me with your email address and I will send it

Your timing is perfect!

...because I have a Magnum waiting to be fitted right now. I'm tempted just to cut the original connector off the wiring loom and solder on a couple of spades, but caution tells me I should source the correct connectors. Which route did you take?

And did you leave the horn body clear of the surrounding plastic "shield", or is it more sort-of wedged in there?

I'd PM you but haven't got round to subscribing yet...:D

locating a stebel air horn on a '09 800 GS?

Hello,
If you have placed a stebel air horn on your 800 GS please let me know where you located it and how difficult it was to wire it.

Thanks!

My F800GS Stebel Air horn arrived from Nippy Normans today. I'm still at work so wanted to fit it at lunchtime. I realised that I didn't have the correct sized socket to take of the existing bolt of the old horn but thought as I'm impatient I will at least wire it up for a test run.

The wiring is very straightforward and doesn't require instructions. you basically have the other end of a canbus. You add some clips to the ends of the wires which then connect to the horn. Be sure to put the plastic sleeves on before you attach the metal connectors. It will become self evident when you come to do it yourselves.

So once I had pinched the connectors onto the ends of the bare wires with my Leatherman I connected the + and - wires to one end of the horn and the other female canbus connector to the male connector on the bike and bingo it worked a treat. When I get home I will take the hold horn off and replace with the new one which fit's into the space for the old horn.

Hope this helps

Ohhh wonky... now you've gone and blown it... (blown it... horn arf arf... anyway I digress) you've started 'Horn Wars'.:D

I'll have to order another bigger horn from Nippy's to come anywhere close to competing with your claxon...

drat :blast

So, just to clarify here

You've got a Stebel Magnum (electro-mechanical horn) or a Stebel Nautilus (air horn)?

And if the latter, are you sure an 800GS will drive a Nautilus without tripping the circuit? You know a Nautilus takes ~15 amps of current, right?

Just curious, like......

I'd be glad to know :-

1. Which model did you buy?
2. Is it louder than the standard?
3. A couple of pics of the installation would be nice..
