I'm sure an Ayrshire run was going to be organised.:nenau
Some absolute cracking roads down there.
Ayr to turnberry Girvan to Newton Stewart
A75 to Castle Douglas A713 past Loch Ken
Tons of wee B roads can be taken up
Does anyone know if you can use the trail from Glentrool to St Johns town of Dalry:nenau

No response to the last time it was mentioned in a thread a couple of weeks ago

I'd still be interested but time and money still an issue at the moment. :(
Towards the end of October should improve on both counts hopefully.

I'll look out the route suggestions I got from friends in the area and post them up when I get a chance (hopefully within the week). Certainly enjoyed my run in Dumfries/Galloway so will be back down.

I've just read yir post Skyenet and it doesn't seem pro active and if Firegus wants to take over the mantle and get it aff the ground that would be great:clap:clap

Unfortunately I have been so skint that my bike has hardly been out of the garage since my Dumfries/Gallowway trip a few months ago and therefore not thought much more about putting a route together.

I wiz doon that way on Saturday, a77, a712, a702 back up a76 to a77 and hame, it's a gid wee part of the country to go fir a scoot.

the road up the side of Loch Ken has got to be the most scenic in the land :)

There wasn't a great deal of response to make it proactive at the time but maybe everyone was quite busy with other things at the time it was posted.

More than happy to pass on feedback I got from folk if Firegus is up for organising a run.

Iain,

The great thing about that neck of the woods is that there's barely a bad road. Depends, but I suppose you're looking for good sweepers and nice scenery.

A712 Queens way, as you say is great in stretches, shame they haven't surfaced chunks of it in a while. Shouldn't be as much of an issue on a GS as it is with Nitrons!

My usual Galloway run consists of mainly A713, A712, A714 as a loop. The 714 is definately worth the run to Newton Stewart and ending up West. After that, you can take the coastal route (A719) after a bit of the SPECS covered A70 and have a stop in Ayr. From Ayr, you can get back to the B743 pretty easily.

Doesn't really take too long and the roads are so good you really don't want it to stop. The A719 coastal road is spectacular in places - if you want a scenic stop if it's a nice day, take the sign for Croy Shore (it's an unclassified road) Lovely place to get photos.

Oh, as a thought, to get to the A713 to begin with, I'd be tempted from the M74 to take the Dunlop road (A70) then cut down the A76 at Cumnock, then turn off to the B741 at New Cumnock - will get you to the driving roads missing most of the sh*t towns. Not been down the B741 much, but it's pretty good IIRC.

Hope that helps a bit mate.

Cheers

As far as good roads are concerned, you are literally spoilt for choice.. Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright (A745 then A711).
Dumfries to Dalbeattie via the Solway coast road (although a bit tight in places, is still a good route, as the scenery is good).
The A713 from Castle Douglas to New Galloway and then the A712 to Newton Stewart (which you already know).
The back road from Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright (B727).. which Dezzy thought (during the campaganza trip last year to Kipford), was better than Dukes pass.. (although don't ask me what the Dukes Pass is like as I have no idea..)

Further west : Newton Stewart to Whithorn, then to Port William and along the coast up to Glenluce (fast section). Lovely part of the country indeed.
The route down to the Mull of Galloway (along the coast) is worth doing ,then come back up via Port Patrick (stunning and busy biker bit on a hot summers day..).
The road heading out of Stranraer (A77) up along the coast to Girvan is a blast, but very well policed.
The A714 from Newton Stewart to Girvan is a lot of fun.. serious amount of twisties!
There are more roads I could mention.
It all depends on how you like to ride in the end, but I prefer the roads down here to those up north, certainly in a car.
I have yet to explore the very far north of Scotland which may change my opinion.
Long may the South west stay forgotten!

And a favourite road of mine in Ayrshire is the B743 from Strathaven to Muirkirk. Also enjoyed the B740 Sanquar to Crawfordjohn road.

Will I need to get any kind of jags before being allowed to go into Ayrshire?

You could always tap Skye. If she is coming along I'm sure she would be ok with that!
