I have done a search on Cut Out’s and could not find anything so I’m here to ask for help.

Over the last 3 or 4 weekends riding I have experienced an unusual occurrence.

After a longish constant ride, both at constant speeds on motorways and dual carriageways etc, and on A’s and B’s with gear changes and throttle activity etc, I have pulled in the clutch to approach a stop or a junction \ roundabout and the fecker has just cut out, the engine dies.
I let the clutch out the first time and the rear wheel locked and caused liquid adrenalin dans mons trolleys.

This has happened now 6 times, so I think it is more than just an occurrence. I used to ride an 800 ST and there was some similar problems reported that needed software upgrades as I recall.

Any one else experienced this or have any ideas \ comments.

The dealer is closed today so can’t ask them until tomorrow but I’d like to know if there is anything specific already known about this problem.

Thanks :thumb2

I have had this happen to me once including the rear wheel lock in second gear slowing down to a turn into a petrol station. No idea why.

The engine cutout problem with the F800STs is not software related. It's due to an issue with the Fuel Breather or fuel line (can't remember which). I had the cutout twice whilst in France in the dry and the wet. It darn well nearly highsided me in the dry, in the wet it just stepped out a bit. Happily the fix did work though.

Yep you are right it was the fuel breather pipe. :thumb2

I have had the same. 08 1200 GSA and on half a dozen occasions if you coast up to a junction the revs just seem to drop too fast for the bike and the engine cuts out. Had it in to my dealer who couldn't find anything wrong.

I thought it was probably related to the fact that I've got Remus headers (no cat) and an Akropovic end can, but interested if others are having the same.....

Mine will go in Friday for the same problem . Difference is that both times, when it happened I had a few electrics on ( heated grips, heated seat,GPS,).

Errm, fools rush in etc.
But a thought about your riding styles (gulp!) pops up when I read your comments "has just cut out, the engine dies. I let the clutch out" sugests to me that its is possible (but only a possible possible mind) that you are pulling the clutch in too early when under braking, which combined with a dead throttle can cause the juice to effectively shut off the engine ie some revs/steady state to no fuel and no matching drive from the back wheel = dead engine. No stone throwing please.

Blimey... those threads ring some old bells.

I had a R1100S which used to do this cut-out thing, normally from 1st though after sitting at idle, at set of lights for instance. But it never started to do it until around 85K miles into its life.

Dunno whether this 'proves' 1100s are 'better' than 1200s.

This has happened to me twice in the last 4 days! Both times I have been dawdling up to stopped traffic or junctions. Starts immediately on the button afterwards 'tho.

Puzzling.........?

Ditto, same problem at traffic lights .Stationary, revs just dropped ,engine cuts out .Turned off all the electrical accessories ,it still cut out.

Mine cut out on me once or twice for no explainable reason, both times at idle.

Electronic Flu prehaps?:nenau

:blast Coast was probably wrong word to use, it is literally between gear changes as you are decelerating, or just as you stop with bike dropping to idle speed.

Haven't noticed a link between electrical consumers and when it occurs though.

Be interested if to read results of bike going in this week for check over ???? :type

Rich
I think you have probably identified the occasions better than me, I am adamant though that my clutch is in, only had the wheel lock once when I let the clutch out.
Coasting or not clutch is in, gear changing and or deceleration.
My bike has never died at standstill from idle.

My dealer says never heard of such a problem but bring it in and they will put it on the machine and check for faults.

I hesitate to mention it and sound like a harbinger of doom, but when my fuel pump controller failed, it started with intermittent problems, getting closer together until it became a total failure.

The good news is that if it is this, it's easily solved!

Might be something entirely different, of course.

mine has cut out twice in the last week, both times changing down third to second,I'm going to ask local dealer abut it,sounds a common problem, interesting to see just how many have had it?

Problem solved

No faults on the computer.
After throttle synchronisation the revs still dropped.
2 top spark plugs replaced ,problem solved,as a matter of fact the bike now runs sweet and responsive (tech. told me he will replace first the 2 plugs,if that didt work he will replace the remainig 2). Bosch plugs were replaced with NGK (part number C12127671301. BM no longer recommends the BOSCH plugs for this model bike ( quote from the tech).
It is a 05 1200RT ,serviced (full service and inspection at £540) at Vines at 11900 miles in Oct.08.
Present milage 12500 miles , garaged.
Acording to service schedule plugs are changed every 24000 Miles.
Cost for today's fix £188 , should I go back to Vines for redress ?
No...I just want go there again ,the bike was there for 2 weeks for warranty work( corrosion) ,2 rocker covers were replaced and front engine cover.Obviously they didn't even look at the plugs.
So it could be just a matter of changing the plugs and a throttle sync.

Just a little aside, my 57 1200GSA cut out on me, throttled off, clutch in and coasted (to shake the pins and needles out of my right hand) as I was riding at night across the mountain plains in Morocco, hit the starter button and all the lights go off = super scary pitch black and doing about 40!

:beerjug: Cheers - I'd be interested to know if this is a permanent fix? Was it a BMW dealer that has said that they no longer recomend Bosch plugs? Seems a strange fix to me, but if it works :thumb2
