somewhere, over the rainbow...
hello folks, my 93 r100gs is proving difficult to start these days.i ve done the usual : cleaning carbs, replacing all rubbers and diaphragms, replaced coils, leads, plugs, checked the compresion (140 and 145 psi) balanced carbs and checked with colourtune, checked valves and cylinder head torques etc etc.
the wierd thing is, if it doesnt start and i then kick it over a few times then it starts on the button straight away. i know the battery is on its way out and the camchain sounds a bit noisy, could these be a cause? running a tad rough too. ta.

Pour a kettle of boiling water over the carbs and then see if it starts. If it does i'll tell you whats wrong :D

Cork float bowl gaskets?

The holes next to the choke tube can go oval preventing fuel from being drawn into the choke circuit. Also check the thin gasket under the choke mechanism itsself

This is the fuel route through to the choke mechanism. If air gets in through the cork gasket (two little arrows next to the tube) there's no vacuum to draw the fuel up into the fuel/air chamber.

The white arrow is the route it shuld take

Are you taking appointments for the Gemtlemens's Wee Kend.....?:augie:augie

I'll be sitting at the back getting progressively drunker during the day and taking the piss out of everybody else who's twidling spanners. Just like everybody else did last year :D

Mind thats if I'm still invited. Haven't heard a word from Proff since I took the piss out of Monos last month :comfort

Sorry Rob.
Attendance is COMPULSORY for you..
No excuses whatsover..
we'll also be getting at least 1 barrel of the Beer you were rather fond of :augie

Come on Neil, I really want to know what the boiling water tells you? is it that the intake or outlet rubbers are beginning to split?

maybe we should start placing bets here? im going to go for either; the top cap of the carb isn't sealing properly (hot water expands it and it then seals) or; the slidey plunger thing inside the main body is jamming (no bob marley jokes please!) in the carb body (which expands with the hot water, releasing the slidey thing). which ever way it goes, trying to start the ole girl every morning is getting boring now....

in an attempt to actually help (which so far - i haven't :blush)
i agree. i had similar problems with mine and after checking all the obvious, this was exactly the problem.
fixed with a cornflakes box gasket. :thumb2

Does this has to do with the Ice forming inside the Carbs on cold days?
