Now I am really p*ssed off. My 1200ADV has effin jeffin let me down again. Had the bike since last August, shelled out for a new gearbox potentiometer when that went wrong, and 4000 miles ago the thing was ripped apart for new gearbox oil seals and a clutch.

The final drive has now expired. There is no play in it, but there is a horrible mechanical 'whoosh-whoosh' when spinning the wheel. You can also feel roughness in it as well. just to confirm things I removed the ABS sensor and it was absolutely covered in metallic swarf. I cleaned it and put it back in, turned the hub once or twice, removed the sensor and it is covered in swarf again. The oil also reeks something rotten. My 1150 did the same thing a couple of years ago (twice in 5000 miles...) so know its knackered- never had any play with bearings but for some reason I seem to kill them

Options as I see them are- and this is where I need some confirmation of cost / ease / experience. There is no warranty involved, plus home serviced- its a 2006 1200 ADV with 27k miles so am going to have to shell out.

1. Replace with new FD- cost £850??
2. 2nd Hand unit from Motorworks / Sherlocks etc- £450?? Are these reconditioned or am I likely to come across the same issue in 6 months time (no funny comments- know this could quite likely happen with a new one)
3. Rebuild- read some threads about Cardiff Motorrad rebuilding- approx cost £350? Am I right with this??

Is there anyone else that can rebuild these drives? Don't mind posting / courier the drive somewhere around the country as I am in no hurry, just want the job done right.

Suppose when it is fixed all I have to get now for a full house is an FPC failure (always carry a spare), Servo failure and a dropped exhaust valve.....

Try Roy Gardener in Croston. He'll be able to rebuild yours.

Very reasonable price wise, and I've never read a bad word about his work.

I thought you needed a special tool /rig to rebuild these? I would be intrested to know how if no special tools required.

Is it me or are we seeing a lot more FD failures than normal on here recently?

Suppose when it is fixed all I have to get now for a full house is an FPC failure (always carry a spare), Servo failure and a dropped exhaust valve.....
