Fuel strip repair

The tank isn't air tight though, breathers etc. Just seems mad to me, I'm not saying I dont believe its safe just that I wouldn't dare do it.
 
Hmm I'm needing to fix my fuel strip.... Will I, won't I hmm.. Might park outside the fire station if I try it..it could be bye bye GS..
 
Do it on an empty tank full of air/fuel vapour and expect at least singed eyebrows. I've seen a very fat tank that someone tried to solder!

But a tank with fuel has a much less easy to ignite rich vapour mixture. Try starting a flooded engine. Alternatively take the fuel strip out to zap it.

Top result, be interesting to see if it stays fixed, I think I read somewhere that it works at first then often craps out again. Please do let us know how it goes.

I thought my strip was playing up today, read 99 miles range with 50% level showing then within about 100 yards read 50m (light on) then almost instantly 38 then 20 then 5 with the bars immediately disappearing from the screen. Luckily I was actually on a petrol trip anyway - managed to brim it with 34.5 litres!! so maybe the gauge was right in the end. Gone back to reading full now with 350 miles range (and rising) but I dont really trust it all of a sudden
 
Also did this on my '08 GSA with a full tank.

Fuelstrip was broken, now it seems to work fine again.
150miles and still no signs of bad fuel readings :beerjug:
 
All those piezo-electric volts must kill the gremlin that lives in the fuel tank. Or maybe just tazer it for a while, when it wakes up it'll mess with your fuel strip again.
 
It's a miracle!! it worked for me too. Can't believe I didn't blow myself up - but to save a couple of hundred quid thought it was worth a shot. Guess it must be the "ignition / fuel / oxygen" triangle thingy, some clever buggers in this forum. Let's hope it lasts now.
 
yip its 206 quid for a new strip supplied and fitted and coded to the bike at a dealers,but you do get a two year warranty ,so for the price of a bbq lighter i suppose its got to be worth a try :eek:
 
The conductive strip itself is probably sealed inside a plastic of some sort. When the conductive strip breaks the strip will give a faulty signal. Zapping it fuses the broken ends together again. The chances of it zapping to earth are unlikely. (1) the fuel tank is plastic and (2) its a closed circuit with the electrical return via the other wire. But it is a spark so brim fill the tank so there is no air to make an explosive mixture and the risk is gone.
 
Just done mine using a tool I lashed together from a cooker igniter, some wire and heat shrink tubing. Six or so clicks on the button, re-connect fuel strip plug and bingo, no warning light and guage reading full. Will have to see how permanent it is.
Hope it does work cos I'm not going to replace the bastard. Not fussed about the guage itself but its annoying having the warning flashing constantly so fingers crossed. I love a good bodge!
Haven't heard of anyone blowing themselves up so I would recommend giving it a try if you have this fault.
 
My fuel gauge has also now gone (2010 GSA).

Looked at the link but no pictures, so I'm not sure whats what..

Does anyone have a heads up on this with Pics??
