Hi all

Ive seen a lot of the posts re riding to the Arctic circle etc, and wonder if its possible to do such a thing in a VERY short space of time. Because of work commitments, I can get 6, maybe 7 days of riding in once I get to Bergen/Kristiansand etc. First of all, the trip will have to be done in mid october, and to that end is it possible to do given that I suspect the weather maybe somewhat dodgy by then ???

If doing the AC isnt possible in October, where should I head in the allotted time for big scenery/big hills ????

Ps . .are there Y Hostels to stop in for cheapo accomodation along the way ??

Thanks all.
Mart

Hi

Norway has a good selection of youth hostels of all types from modern buildings to old fishing houses. Prices are quite reasonable too. Another way is to use cabins (called hytte) on campsites. October maybe a bit late for the arctic circle, mid to late august up there the touristy bits start shutting down. If you want to get to the AC quickly, go through sweden as you can cover ground easier, but the scenery isn't as good.

Try to contact Liv,she will give you some good tip's.
we went last week in may, first week of june, and some of the passes were still closed by snow,I think you could be pushing your luck in Mid October.Pm Liv she will know better.Hope this helps

It's cold up there....

Norways fantastic .. went up to the Artic Circle last year in July/August and the passes in the south were open ... but snow to the side of the roads.

Why rush ... the land between Bergen and Trondheim really is fantastic .. all them Fjords/mountains ... dirt tracks ... just made for a GS.

Hi!

As I said before;
'Im not the only expert here - all what the others wrote is correct! :clap

October may be cold, or not - it is hard to tell.
But if you can handle cold & wet weather, perhaps snow (-who knows if you get snow?), and book places to sleep before you leave home - then I guess you can do it.

As said, most camp sites are closed in October, and so is many ''tourist traps'' - if you know what I mean.
But you can put up a tent in the woods, if you want; it is legal, but perhaps not wery comfy...
Book rooms, and hope for good weather - sometimes we have nice weather in October.

-What would a native do?
Knut (k-nut, my boyfriend) likes to take a last 3-4 days ride (a long weekend) before the winter, and he normally do that in September - if the weather forecast is good. He does not wait until October, and he does not ride that far north as you plan to do, that time a year.
And he stay at hotels.

So;
it can be a great trip, and it can be cold.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, so please post more questions, if you have any. I'm glad to help!

...and everything is possible:
We have a meeting in february, and they camp in tents in the woods - it's not a camp site! And they have to bring everything they need for the weekend. Primustreffet is the name!
And no; it is not only Norwegians there! Every year a group is coming from the Netherlands, and there are people from Danmark, and the UK! All are riding their bikes from home to Primustreffet, and back home again!

Cheers!
:) Liv.

Bergen 02Jun06

I get to Bergen on 02Jun06 at 18.00 and have until the 15th to ride around, probably aiming to AC at some point.
Anything going on ? Will try for your meet on a Wednesday

Hi Turnipbmw!

-Did you mean you want to come to Tyrigrava at a wednesday? I hope so! :clap
Here is Oslo Fjordcamp http://www.oslocamping.no/mapen.htm
Klick at the left map; if you follow the small road direction south for max.10 minutes, you get Tyrigrava on your left hand!
FjordCamp (the link above) is the campsite closest to Tyrigrava, but you need a tent.

If you want to rent a hytte (cabin) or a place in Oslo, look here:
http://use-it.unginfo.oslo.no/sider/accommodation.php .

-Is there something going on in June in Norway?
Yes! At Stryn Friday 9th of June - Sunday 11th. of June 2006. :-)
There is a meeting at Stryn (Rv.15, at the border Sogn og Fjordane/Møre og Romsdal, not far from Geiranger and the glacier Jostedalsbreen and the deepest lake in Norway; Hornindalsvatnet.)
The meetings name is Fjordrally or Fjord Rally.
They are going to lead you around in the area at Saturday (so be easy on the boose Friday night!), to see fjords & mountains - I'm sure that is great in good weather!
The campsite is www.mindresunde.no/engelsk/index.htm Call Mindresunde to book a cabin / hytte!
BMW MC Fjordlaget are hosting the meeting, and below here you'll find phonenumbers to call, if you need to ask the club something. (It's in Norwegian, I'm sorry!)

Here is a list with a numbers of meetings in Norway this year:
http://www.nmcu.org/tur/hurtigliste.asp
There are more meetings than those on the list, but I can't think of any right know.

I hope I helped!

Wednesday

Yes will try for a Wednesday.
Am coming up to the orkneys on 26th, then Shetlands on 30th and should be in Norway/Bergen on 2nd June.
I have to drop off a Velocette fuel tank but then will be free until 15th when I leave via Stavanger.

So I'll meet you at Tyrigrava Wednesday evening, 7th. of June, then?
I'm normally there from 06.30 pm, but I guess I can be there earlier.
-Do you bring a tent and stay at the camp site FordCamp? If so, I can meet you there and ride with you to Tyrigrava!

Once I picked up a man from Austria, Joseph;
I saw him outside his tent, I asked him if he wanted to let me show him a special cafè, and after a lot of persuating he finally dared to follow me. (I must look wery dangeriuos!). When we arrived Tyrigrava his eyes went big, and he said; ''A lot of bikes!!!'' :)
And once I picked up a Swede the same way.
My friends are teasing me; ''-So you came alone tonight? There was no motorbikes at the camp site, I guess?''

Let's hope for sun and dry tarmac at ''your'' wednesday!

If you klick at the last word at my site (www.clubscarver.com) you'll find my e-mail adress.

CU, I hope!
:) Liv.

Mid october is too late to come such a so long way to visit the artic circle. The weather is so uncertain that you are not garanteed to reach it without driving through snow and ice. Also, the Arctic Circle senter will be closed, so there will be no souvernirs to purchase :) http://www.polarsirkelsenteret.no/ . But if you absolutely want to go there in october you can take a ferry to Bergen, then enter another boat, Hurtigruten, to Bodø and there will be only 160 km left to drive. But that wouldn't be much of a motorcycle journey. http://www.hurtigruten.com/no/default.aspx

Three of us were considering doing the Artic Circle trip in early July 2007. Does it make for a pleasant trip tring to do the round trip in a maximum of seven days, or is it too rushed. Pub talk had planned riding through Belgium, Germany to Denmark then up through Sweden. The return being ferry to Newcastle from Norway.

Hi Bill!

I'm not an expert on that route...
Figure out how many miles/kilometres that is, and keep in mind there are not fast highways all over Norway - speed 80km/h average for the roads, is what I guess you can count on. (Some faster, some slower...)
But I think you better find more time;
-is it fun to ride and ride, and not to see the nature and take pictures?
If you start from the UK I'd say it's better to take a ferry to Bergen (and back) - I can't imagine the nature in those countries you miss is that good, and the south west part of Norway is special - fjords, mountains, hairpin roads, glacier and snow in the summer (not normally snow on the roads, only up in mountains if, you want to see it!), and old houses / farms, and churches made of wood, and much more.
I didn't know how different Norway and the buildings here are from the UK until I was there last summer!

But I think (I don't know!) your plan is doable, but I wouldn't do it... too much miles in 7 days, and I believe a boring first halves of the route.

:) Liv.

I agree,I 'did' Sweden last year in 8 days via Channel ferry,France,Belgium,Holland ,Germany,Denmark and Oresund bridge.A lot of motorway miles just to see some trees!
So this year its Newcastle/Kristiansand and at least 2 weeks in Norway,I haven't booked a return yet! :thumb

Hello Liv:thumb2

I'm tempted to journey to the arctic circle in summer of next year. I only have a week of holiday and plan to use ferry to Bergen and back.
What route (road numbers) would you recommend.:nenau
I intend to camp or hytte each night.

Cheers:beerjug:

If you've only got a week why waste it going up and down the E6 to the Arctic circle - stay in the area around Bergen and you'll see the most spectacular parts of Norway.

Just got back from a trip to the Arctic circle, went the long way round via France, Belguim, Holland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and finally through Norway up to Nordkapp. Three days London to Talinn then across to Helsinki and another two days to Nordkapp, good weather at Nordkapp meant that the experience of the Midnight sun was a target worth aiming for. Its a total of around 7000miles but I will admit to resting on the way back for a week in Liepaja, Latvia with freinds and family. Watch out for Moose and Reindeer, they don,t seem to have a great deal of road sense. I will try to post some pictures on a seperate thread.

We have just come back from Norway with some of the advice gained from this site.

We hit Stavanger and headed east. I would recommend visiting Lysebotn (2nd best road in Europe IMHO) and headed east and North throught Roldal (nice campsites!). (cant find the funno O, soz), very high with loads of scenery and with snow even in June

We road north and as the others are saying the the roads north of Bergen are great but equally are the ones headed north west towards Bergen from Roldal direction.

I would recommend the atlantic/north sea road. Personally I found Sweden boring in comparison to Norway but when your spoilt with such beautiful scenery your going to think anywhere else is rubbish.

Cheers Liv for the advice you gave us before hand! :bow
