It 'aint running right !

I decided to take the bike for a run today after charging the battery. It was fine before being parked up in November and also In Jan when I went for a short trip "round the block". Now it is reluctant to idle, misfires and backfires occasionally. It is really "jumpy" in first but gets better at higher revs but feels down on power. After less than a mile the CAT was glowing bright orange and burning the tyre!!

It has fresh unleaded in it and as I say, was fine last time it was started a couple of months ago. I don't think I disturbed anything lifting the tank.

Any ideas??

oops could be nasty

if it was anyway misfiring you could have had a meltdown in the cat??? unburnt fuel in the cat, operating temp a lot of degrees and voila your cat may be toast!!(the inside will actually melt and eventually block up..

next question is the battery ok on a lot of bikes if the battery is naff it wont run right hence the mis fire..
 
This is where you need to look

Make sure that the outer sheath of the cable (the black bit) is properly seated in the adjuster housing. Moving the tank can cause the cable to pop out - this causes a major imbalance between the cylinders and will cause the right hand cylinder to run very lean (and therefore very hot) - which could cause the symptoms you described.

I think you're on to something there. When pulling away it did seem as if I had to open the throttle further than normal and it seemed less reactive. I put this down to lack of power but it may well be down to the cable. Cheers, I'll give it a try.
 
I did exactly this on Friday fitting some
 
...QD connectors. Put the tank on and started the bike. Pop, bang etc, wouldn't idle either. Checked everything over, and realised I'd popped the end of the cable out of the r/side housing. Popped it back in and it was back to normal.
 
I've got sausage fingers.

Ferg, fitted the chip as well. No probs fitting it. Made no difference at all. Same power delivery etc. I've ordered a BB chip from Motorworks now. That other chip cost £40, so I'm not too upset.
It was worth a go at that price. Thanks for your help.

I have the BB chip fitted. Am well happy with it. Its good 'cos you can select several different fuel maps depending on how your bike is set-up.
Just to let you know in advance, the BB instructions are crap. Pigeon English takes on a whole new meaning here ;)

Make sure you then open the throttle right back to the stop with the engine not running. This makes sure that the cable outer is sat well down into the Adjuster cup.

Just got a chance to look at the bike today - you were spot on!
A couple of seconds and it was back to normal but I'd never have spotted it - cheers.
