‘Base’ GSA1250; madness?

I would not want anything except heated grips
Pity the EU has forced all new bikes to come with ABS nowadays, unlike rest of world where it is optional
Electronic aids spoil the ride for me, I ride a bike because I just want to get away from all that and just feel the rawness
 
I wouldn’t want a road bike without ABS it never causes any issues and has definitely saved me from at least 1 crash since I first had it in 2005

Real rawness would be without heated grips and summer gloves , noiw that's feeling the ride lol.

A base bike with no extras is only worth it if you’re going to keep it long-term. When people say more to go wrong, most of issues experienced on GS’es in the last few years have either been mechanical (fork collars, spokes) or part issues (dead battery cell, crap heated grips on 2013/2014 bikes). I’m not a big fan of keyless or the GSAP on the GS but they don’t really bother me.

What’s probably a worse option nowadays is buying a fully-loaded TE for cash and keeping it for 1-2 years as used market values are generally appalling due to all the end of PCP bikes flooding into dealers!

Yes - it's like people who decry traction control and want to turn TC off, insisting that their supremely skilled right hand is all the traction control they need in putting down the power of their overpowered steed, and state that lower powered bikes just don't need TC at all. I would disagree, as TC is not just about moderating superbike levels of power to avoid wheelspin or unintended wheelies, it also has an important safety function. This is because it is not just excessive application of power which can break traction, but also undetected (by the rider) deterioration in grip caused by road surface (dust, gravel, spilt diesel), or tyres (wear or contamination by oil leaks). I nearly came off a relatively low powered bike when encountering glassy smooth worn concrete patches concealed by surface dust at a road junction in Spain. Why wouldn't you want that safety net in those sort of situations, particularly as modern TC systems are not generally intrusive?

There's been a couple of times over the years where ABS or TC have just kicked in... usually when you're less than 100%. Usually tiredness or fatigue or ill health, nearing end of journey, or completely random acts of twattery...

Mine was an Audi TT driver who slammed on the brakes 60mph to a dead stop on a country road, with nobody in front of him. I only just stopped in time, FULL ABS EMERGENCY STOP. He was arguing with his girlfriend, and didn't even know we were coming up behind him.

It's very rare, but always glad I've got the gadgets.

I hope you dealt with the f*ckwit appropriately. Still got the rocket launcher on the GSA?

He had enough on his plate by the looks of it. My mate just rode up by the side of me and we just shrugged our shoulders and carried on.

Without ABS, I may have dropped the bike or gone over the handlebars... who knows?

Sometimes, just be glad you were keeping that safety gap in between, and the safety gadgets deployed when needed :)

So true, I often see L plater 125s flat out on the A38 6 to 10 ft behind a lorry or van. travelling far to close for safety. I suspect very few 125s have ABS

Your choice obviously, but I just hope an occasion when you turn off TC does not happen to coincide with a situation where you really really needed it! :duck:

I’m no riding god (far from it!) but I have ridden bikes for 40 years and have only mislaid one part of my body thus far. Only in recent years have I had the ‘benefit’ of TC so am quite happy with my choices.

I would buy what you want. I like some of the goodies but not mad on GSAP or keyless, but would want the hill start. No idea which variant that is. I’m sure the dealer will let me know.
 
ABS saved my bacon a few weeks ago; a car pulled out in front of the one I was following down a NSL and crawled up the road. As I pulled out to pass both, the first car indicated and immediately turned right into a driveway. I stopped 2” from its rear door. My recollection is of the lack of dive, and the feedback through the lever as I felt first the rear, then the front wheels do their ABS judder thing. It had been a while since I’d practiced a full-on emergency stop from 60 mph.

I wouldn’t be without it.

You puffing your chest or is that a real statement?

I could understand it on a high performance car... but on a motorcycle.... really?

How exactly is it a lot more fun?

My Bandit 1250 loses traction, usually in the wet on a spirited roundabout exit.... tank slappers are not fun except for your mates watching you shit your pants after you've left the seat momentarily...
 
Thing with most of the “more stuff to go wrong” is that a lot of it is still there just not enabled even on a basic bike. All the prep is there harnesses etc.
I understand people who don’t like the ESA or want the basic suspension so they can put some fancier kit in. Also maybe the keyless and SOS but the rest isn’t going to make the bike less reliable.
 
After having a huge moment on some diesel a couple of weeks ago, I’m quite glad my bike has ABS & traction control, otherwise it would have been a different story.

Yeah but ABS and Traction Control won't stop the bike sliding sideways on diesel spills...
