► Centre and side stands

yep sorry forgot to mention that it has one already fitted, last year in the pyrennes did not trust it at all and my mate was the same with his.

I had to change my sidestand, it bent slightly on the top half to to point where I had similar problems; it never fell over, but the lean angle looked alarming and I didn't feel happy with it at all. It was out of warranty by the time I realised the bend was there, so I had to pay for it.

However I may have been, at least partly, to blame for the failure anyway; for a while I mounted the bike by standing on the left footpeg before swinging my leg over, because I'm a shortarse and it was easier to do it that way.

me too :blast :augie :tears

Have got a 650 straight side stand for sale as they are shorter than 800 ones :blast:comfort

Richie:beerjug:

My 800 seems fine, however I did have to tighten the entire peg/sidestand assembly to the frame as it was coming loose, so be aware of that.

I think the stand itself is very prone to bending - mine's exactly the same and doesn't sit flush with the swing-arm when it's 'parked'

+1

mine's the same...

also very guilty of standing on the left hand peg, whilst trying to get my right leg over the luggage...

it's that or a very undignified short run-up followed by hop, skip & a jump onto bike

I've had 2 problems with my side stand.

The first was when I noticed some extra play when putting the stand down. This was easily fixed by tightening the bolts.

The second problem was when my stand snapped last year when being strapped down on the ferry to Spain. It was a clean break, and showed signs of rust on the spigot, which is inside the stand, so shouldn't be able rust? Luckily there was no extra damage, because it landed on the bloke tightening the straps!

Surprise surprise, it wasn't covered by warranty. So I had to buy a new one.

With the benefit of hindsight, and looking back at photo's of the previous years trip. My mate has the same bike, and in the pics, you can clearly see my bike leant at a different angle to his. Something I'll be keeping an eye on.

BTW, there's an F800GS sidestand on eBay

Mine did the same due to getting on using the footpeg as a step! Fully loaded on the way to france for a long weekend. Got to a point where I couldn't get off the bike without someone to hold it up (Cheers Browny!!) Luckily came across a French motorbike garage and some shrugging of shoulders and very poor french from us and no english from the mechanic, they managed to do a fantastic repair job, including a respray for 17 Euros.

I try to get on and off without standing on the peg, but i'm just not as flexible as I used to be!

I had exactly the same experience. Having panniers fitted made it a nightmare when I wanted to get off. First I had to wait for my Harley riding chum to catch up. Then I had to wait whilst he went through his post ride 'do I look cool' check. Then I could get off.

I too found a friendly garage who managed to weld it up 180 degrees out and it wouldn't take the bikes weight anyway! I had great fun trying to get my wife to hold the bike up when I got home. It was past midnight, and she'd already gone to bed. Atleast the dogs were pleased to see me.

My new stand was on the counter at NOG when I got back.

You guys need a small set of steps... like those short people use to get on and off of horses :D

That's said you'll also need to employ someone to follow you around to put said steps next to your BMW when you're ready to get off.

Hehe

I wouldn't mind but I'm 6'2" tall!!! Time for some yoga I think! Tho I do like the sound of the fold down steps.

Found a pic of my bike undergoing a sidestandectomy somewhere in France!
