► Exhaust options/problems and CAT

I noticed a similar problem on my F650.

Spoke to my dealer who said that these bikes are prone to doing it. Is he right?

is there some problem with that? my does the same but there is no problem, he is probably right.

Mine does it.
Sounds just like a Gold Star (Old British bike made by BSA) on the over-run.

Could be an air leak at the silencer/pipe join as silencer was removed to fit the lower panier rails. May be that no grease was used when the silencer was re-fitted.

Sounds good anyway. !!

I noticed a similar problem on my F650. It only happens occasionaly when i was decelerating, mainly downhill. Thought i had a leak in my exhaust (I'll be honest i know nothing about mechanical things :o But im learning)

Noticed that too.

I now find as many downhill stretches as I can :D

Yeah, I've had it happen. Same as everyone elso, on the over-run.

But it should not happen as this is a fuel injected bike, should only happen to bikes with carbbies. Just wondering if it could be related to emission standards. Also if it stops when a computer is change to after market/re-mapped.

But it is :cool::clap

Sorry Snowlife. Maybe it should not happen on an injected bike, but it does. 1100/1150/1200GS's fitted with aftermarket pipes (no cat) & Remus or other silencers all do it if the various joints are not 100% sealed.
All you have to do is hold the throttle just off closed, on the over-run, and they'll pop away all day.
As you say - it is indeed !!

Spoke to BMW about this on first service. Was told its wasn't an air leak apparently all the 800 twins do this...

Now just need to learn how to shoot flames like my friends 2002ish highly modified Suzuki gsxr-750. (clutch in, Hit kill switch, two full opens of throttle, kill switch on, release clutch, = flames)

As BumbleBee identified, it's most likely due to a minor air leak at the join between the exhaust and the silencer.

Tim

Yup, deffo the join, on mine I can seal off the exhaust outlet completely, and the bike still idles - breathing through the join - I am gonna ask the dealer if this would be an mot fail- cos it will prolly catch me out for the 1st mot:o

The pop-pops happen to my 650 twin all the time on coasting, in gear, toward a traffic light or slowdown. Particuarly louder when decelerating quickly. I call it a "good thing."

akra with baffle removed sounds sweet

looks much better too.:thumb

F 650GS Exhaust rattling noise

Hi Everyone,
I received my brand new F650GS on Friday afternoon :bounce1 and after a few kilometers on a dirt road(nothing too extreme) I noticed some rattling noises. As I come to the 650 from its bigger cousin the RT I thought it was the chain (not used to it, driving shaft drives for years). On closer inspection I realized the if I try and move the exhaust by hand it moves probably about 1cm left and right if you look the bike from behind.
Sorry my ignorance but is this normal?
Apart from that i am stoked :clap with the bike, a new taller screen is on its way!!!!

Thanks

Akrapovic pipe on GS 800?

Hi all,

have any of you fitted the Akrapovic tailpipe to your GS 800?

If so...what do you think and is it too loud?

Does it come with an up-rated ECU and a sports air filter?

Does it increase performance a bit?

I am test riding a GS 800 on hopefully Monday. I popped over to my local dealer yesterday and sat on the demo and started it up...feels very nice and i love the design...it looks great in black and yellow imo...but it did sound a bit quiet when idling and reving it up?

Cheers in advance

Akra vs Remus vs Scorpion exhaust

It seem that alot of people are going for the Akar exhaust, then Remus and a distant third the Scorpion.
Also alot of people look like they will use the bike for 'the big tour'.
So if the Scorpion offers the option to allow you to put EVEN panniers CLOSER to the bike (metalmule.com), why wouldn't more people be buying this one:confused: Price?

I am assuming that all offer the same sound, the Akra and Remus are a little bit cooler looking IMO. Is that the decisive factor???

If the blap-blap on overrun is down to leaky zorsts on the 800, then there's a lot of faulty 800's out there because mine does the same.

I can't find any obvious leaks so I'll assume it's part of the bikes 'character' until proved otherwise by people who know more than me!

Alot of people have recognised the pop of the exhaust, and it is thought to occur due to a leak of the slip on pipe, stock or otherwise.

Well i think that if you have a stock exhaust and want it completely sealer it would be done on warranty. Perhaps the dealer may need some guidence on how to achieve the seal:mcgun. On another forum i found this product mentioned

"Wurth Exhaust Paste"

As for aftermarket exhausts, well you are going to have to spring for the paste and time yourselves. I am sure that the 15ish gram tube will not break the budget.

BUT if the exhaust is not completely sealed you get that nice pop of the exhaust on the over-run, why would you want to stop that:confused:

I just spotted the other thread about exhaust options...sorry to be repetative but i did look for past threads and didn't see that one? I must be getting old!

Anyway...it looks very nice indeed...but is it supplied with an up-graded ECU and air filter?

I take it that the baffles are removable and easily re-fitted if necessary?

What does it cost here in the UK btw...it is Sunday and the dealer is closed.

Cheers

Joff
