De-Cat?

I'm thinking hard about a Remus can, but can't stretch the budget to a set of downpipes (if I want a Power Commander too that is..!)

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully de-catted the OE downpipes?

Would it be as simple as cutting it out and replacing it with a section of plain tube, or slicing open the cat chamber and removing the core..?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I'm about to be doing mine this next week

Will let you know :thumb

I offer OEM decatted pipes for reasonable price... If interested, let me know... I already bought Remus pipes.

P.S. if you buy Remus pipes be ready to do modification on bash plate and crashbars - pipes ar wider and does not fit together wit OEM bashplate, TT and Holan Crashbars.

Adv spec crash bars are ok, bashplate needs modification.

Hey, that's important information.:thumb2
Got any photos to show us or a diagram showing us the physical difference between the different pipes vs. OEM ditto?

best regards

i ll try to make some pictures at the weekwend. Here is one photo, that shows wider diameter of the pipes causing that normal bashplate needs to be lowered aproximatelly 0,5 inch.

I was quite pissed of after this experience - cost me lot s of money, not only the pipes, but also crashbars... i had to switch from TT to advspec. Of course I could do some welding, but I dod not like TT ones at all - advspec stuff looks much more solid and this was the last drop to change my mind...

Need my money back, so i am selling original one with cat removed modification :)

Sounds like your exhaust pipe dealer haven't done his job informing about needed modifications. Here in Norway we would have slammed the pipe at his desk and asked for a refund - or free modifications. We have a reasonably strong law that requires the dealer to inform before purchase about any irregularities or needed modifications.

Personally I don't mind mods - as long as I'm informed about them before I purchase a product. Give me a thick, shiny aftermarket catalogue though - and I'm already well manipulated. Doh :augie

Question on the Akrapovic

I have seen that the Akra exhaust is also available directly from Akrapovic:
http://www.akrapovic.com/motorcycle-exhaust/products/bmw/model/f-800-gs-2008/slip-on-17/
and it seems to be slightly cheaper than going directly through BMW.

i guess it's the same pipe as sold by BMW just with a different sticker. does anyone know this for sure?

and then, if it's the same installing this should not create any issue with fuelling, warranty, etc...

many thanks for the help!

1lb 8oz don't work in metric yet I'm afraid

But quite a weight saving :thumb

Been out for a run today, engine certainly seems to rev more easily, maybe a sharper bark to the exhaust note (Akro end can) ... feels smoooother too :thumb

Could be in the mind of course :rob

I wonder is it better to break it in first and then to remove the cat or to remove it from the zero km and forget about it?

Further to my posts above ... in reality I didn't really need to remove the battery, air box and the whole caboodle, it didn't actually make access any better.... I thought it might have done.... but I ended up doing the whole work from 'below' in the end :blast

Side panels off :thumb2
Bash plate/engine bars off :thumb2
Radiator bottom mounts off, just enough room then to move it forward a little
Access is knuckle grazing finger wrenching
Probably better off removing all the mounts for the rad, maybe more movement available then
Just be careful... I undid the small screw and nut at the bottom center of the radiator, dunno if you have to, but I did. A small piece of fancy plastic cowling dropped out... took me five minutes to trace where it came from, but soon becomes apparant... just below the fan housing :)
10mm ring spanner fits the manifold nuts but you only have about 5 degrees of arc to play with :blast
Small 1/4" socket set with fine ratchet required :thumb

The studs came out of the head with the nuts firmly seized on ... I left 'em like this, replaced as they came out with copperslip on the threads :thumb

Be very careful on assembly you don't get them cross threaded... you're working blind and by feel

Good luck :beerjug:
