gutting out the exhaust

yesterday i traded in the 800GS temporarily...for this cub90. it hadn't been started for 14 months and fired up on the first kick. incredible little things.

i rode it from comber to coleraine on it, and it was hard work, not to mention the laughs i got with enduro gear and a Tour X helmet.

Anyway, the reason being I was out with a mate yesterday on his 1200 and was impressed by his exhaust. he was running everything stock but had cut out the cat and opened up the can, ripped all the crap out of it, put a straight through pipe in it, and it sounded really sweet without being over done like some of the straight through systems. anyway, his TIG welding was like a factory job, so i left him with my bike and borrowed one of his cub's for a week or two. the point is, i'm wondering if anyone has opened the standard can on the 800 and if anyone knows of any immediate downside to clearing out the baffles etc in it? i've been thinking about an akra that a friend is selling, but figure at the moment that it's more money than i want to part with. in thinking about it, i am actually coming to the conclusion that the more industrial looking stock effort is more in keeping with the bike (it's obvious downside to the akra is the weight as there's no real power advantage). it sounds good at the moment, but i think this might just help and the real bonus being that it'll free up a few more horses. any advice before i butcher my baby would be appreciated. :rob
ps., i'm not worried about re-sale etc because i'll ride this bike into the ground...(as indeed someone caught me doing on a video in kesh - before the jokers weigh in)

Like you Si, I'd also be interested in doing this and also like you will be running mine to the very end :) :thumb

i think the can has been stripped bare and the straight through perforated pipe put in now. cat will be out soon, but i'm away for a few days now, so will reveal all when i get back...

exhaust overhaul

It's finished. the cat has been put down, and the baffles etc all removed from the stock can. In place of the original non-stainless piping (talk about cost cutting?) it now houses a perforated straight-through stainless steel pipe.

The bike is very noticeably fresher and it's no surprise with the amount of work the engine must have to do to get it to breathe through all the 'stuff' that BMW put in the exhaust. It sounds symphonic now and whilst not obtrusive, is deep and has loads of grunt (digital camera knackered so sadly can't put a video up). As I said before, I prefer the look of the OEM can on the bike and now think it sounds better than any aftermarket offering I've heard (just doesn't have the weight saving of an akra), so for £300 for all of this, I reckon it is money well spent. And the beauty is that the welds on the can look factory!! :drool

F800Gs - Leo Vince exhaust

Has anyone fit a Leo Vince exhaust to the F800GS, what is the weight saving, is there a increase in sound and any power increase.
Cheers
Tim

I have installed remus hexacone titanium and remus headers. The bike operates smoother and it has gained power in all range of revs. It is very easily on an one wheel now (not with clutch...). I have take off silencer, the sound is great, it reminds me XR 500.

DE-CAT

BE AWARE GUYS,I DO BELIEVE THAT MOTORCYCLE MOT TESTS WILL SOON INCLUDE EXHAUST GAS TESTING,AND IF YOUR BIKE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A CAT FITTED YOU WILL BE IN THE PROVERBIAL,JUST A THOUGHT :rob

timo , don't know about the leo vince but i've got a scorpion carbon fibre can fitted to mine , much lighter than original and sounds great. Its definetly worth upgrading from the standard exhaust , especially when you feel how heavy the original is !:clap

There's no need to shout

Good to see a pro welder on the case.

You can buy sections of stainless pipe bent to cut and weld your own pipes with. I'm doing one for my SR500 street tracker, so anything is possible.

Yeah simmer down....not before it was required by law.

Adds further to my arguement of keeping older machines on the road.
Damage to enviroment extracting raw materials to make new machines far, far outweighs what that machine will ever burn in fuel. Something the car industry doesn't want you to know

Sorry for shouting guys, the cap locks were on and couldn't be botherd to rewrite the message,by the way i'm all for modifying bikes it's nanny who will slap your wrists not me !:thumb2

Related question, I think...

Does it do any harm at all to the engine to run with the baffles out? I have the 'short' Beowulf can and I still have the cat on my bike.
Also, is there an impact on the fuel consumption with baffle in or out?

I was tempted this morning. Baffles can be removed too. Would like to hear one. Theres a GSA with one in the bike park. I will try to catch the owner this week.

I have had one fitted to my F800gs for a couple of months now
just like the sound of it lighter than O.E one my one didn't come of Ebay
it came straight from Beowulf tbh they used my bike as the Pattern bike

I have an oval one in matt black which I think goes well with the general colour scheme of the bike. Am really pleased, sounds great without being too noisy, seems to be well made and fits easily.

Sound of beowulf

I saw a fully blinged up F800GS in the best colour of stealth grey :thumb on Saturday at AJ's and it had a beowulf exhaust on. It sounded great, and you can buy them direct from Beowulf for the same price as ebay :beerjug:

I was looking on a Suzuki sportsbike site last night and they've managed to negotiate a 10% discount for their 'club' . I'm tempted to ask if we can set up the same sort of deal, or just lie to Beowulf and say I'm a member of the GSX1400RsXgtSpaD club ....
