► Exhaust options/problems and CAT

well, if you must...

the last time I cleaned an exhaust - Ti downpipes and can - I did it with WD40 and a scotchbrite pad. The WD40 slows the scotchbrite down a bit and it leaves a nice directional satin finish too...

There - I said it ...

Greg

ps - my 8's still dirty dirty dirrrty...

Spray on WD40 and watch the dirt run off :thumb2 Then give it a quick clean down with some dilute Muc off. I really wouldn`t be doing anything with a scotchbrite pad near the can :blast

Thanks to you both for the suggestions - I've just spoken to PP and have had one dispatched - £45 .........for a "loop strap" ...... Ouch!

Soak in WD40 or GT85 and leave over night. Tar spots will then be easier to remove. Better still if can is warm when you apply the sprays.

Parrafin dissolves tar and is oily enough to leave an oily coating.....

+1 on the paraffin............

.........and a combination of Dremel and sandpaper/seriuos elbow grease to get rid of the rust on the stainless downpipes of my Triumph TT600 :(

I've used water based 'alloy clean' as supplied to truck wash's for cleaning fuel tanks, wheels and cat-walks. It leaves a streak free satin shine in the stainless steel, but DON'T get it on anything else as it's very strong!! On alloy it leaves it matt, but s/steel kept its shine.

Rub on with a sponge and rinse off, it bought the wheel spokes up very well but then tarnished the black wheel rims which then took a lot of polishing! (Hence don't get it on anything else!).

Rattle from silencer.

A couple of times after following me friends have asked if something is loose on the bike. Everything checked out ok and sounded fine. On Sunday restarting after a good run and with the bike cool I noticed a very metallic rattle from the silencer on tick over. This vanishes when revving and while riding once the bike is fully warm.
Anybody else had a similar sound.

The Centre Stand can also clonk/bounce about a bit if you are going over bumpy ground. If you think this could be a possibility, strap the stand up with a bungee and see if the noise is still there.

Try fuel exhausts in Kendal

I got a titanium can made by Damian at Fuel exhausts in Kendal for £300, there are some pics here
http://s557.photobucket.com/albums/ss16/barnesontour/?albumview=slideshow
Damian now has the dimensions and will make a stainless version for you for just £250
The can comes with a removable baffle which fixes by a bolt not a rivet so it's easy to remove, with the baffle fitted the exhaust sounds meatier than standard, with the baffle removed it sounds lovely, just enough rasp to make it interesting without taking the piss too much, its also a lot lighter and tucks in further, ideal for fitting paniers. I haven't dyno'd the bike but it seems to rev out a bit easier and certainly hasn't lost any power. Take a look http://www.fuelexhausts.com/ thats my bike in the gallery, if you want one give Louise a call on 01539 738333 and tell her phil barnes sent you!
By the way, I'll post details of my low cost GPS set up, custom seat and HID conversion soon.

Beowulf Discount?

Did any of you guys secure a 'club' discount with Beowulf? As after reading all your reviews (thanks) and those on Adrider I'm going for the one on ebay i.e. stubby 350mm oval in mirror finish. Then I guess I'll have to join so I can post pic's and video/sound!!

I have the Bewoulf stubby... I asked for a 'trade' discount, which i think was 10%, but I didn't have any letterhead to hand, but they gave me a discount anyway, of 7.5% I think...

Hi ..

I was trying to organise something with Beowulf, but the 'audience response' was somewhat underwhelming, so I just let it slide slowly intoi the gutter .... I got mine from MooreSpeed Racing in Poole and got the same price as I'd have got direct from Beowulf (about £135 incl. link pipe and hanger.)

I have to say that I've been really rather happy with my pipe - I'm not sure I'd go for the stubby one though, mine's 450mm - about the same as the standard pipe - and it clears the pannier frame and number-plate... IIRC the stubby one is 350mm so would end about a hand's width behind the plate..

I had the same problem as a previous poster with an ovalised link pipe though - it would have been a complete b1tch to fit if I hadn't had a bench vice to squeeze it back to round ...

Greg

Thanks Greg & Jimbogs, phoned today and have ordered the 380mm oval polished, as per the one on ebay so we'll see how we go. Was given 10% discount straight away, especially if you steer away from ebay and save them the ebay AND Paypal fees and ring them direct.

£137.50 delivered! And yes I do have a vice so I'll watch out for that one thank you. I wonder if anyone has told them that when you've welded the clips on it tends to send the link pipe oval? (If mine's the same I'll let them know - they seem VERY nice people to deal with).

Exhaust arrived today - just two days later!

As you said Greg after welding the spring clips on the link pipe seems to have gone slightly oval (a fault/problem I have reported to them as mine was the same!). This is VERY easily cured with a quick squeeze in a vice with soft jaws but would be VERY difficult to make it fit without.

The fit on the hanger and finish is superb, on tick-over the sound/noise is the same with or without the baffle fitted.
