► Exhaust options/problems and CAT

My Exhaust Mutilation

Righto, here goes. Having been given a boost in inspiration by mark71 I got into gears and proceeded with the de-catting of the standard exhaust. My previous plans were hampered by the idea that I'd replace the 'bulb' with pipes, but mark71 showed us that the easiest way is just to get rid of the "unecessary stuff" and weld it back together. :friday :clap

Anyway, I started with hunting down a set of headers off eBay, arrived fine and some £50 later I was washing the old dirt off the 'zorst.

The process is fairly simple, but you'll need tools and a face mask / respirator to keep your lungs functioning.

The full set of pictures were uploaded to Picasa, but now it's all Google+, so I don't seem to be able to direct link to the pics. wnkrs.

For detailed photos, head over to Project De-Cat.

The short version is that I used a 10mm drill to drill around the core.

Then I chiselled out the core using a drill and a hammer. :angel

Got it to this state.

And then I used a small Proxxon angle grinder and my powerfile to get it to this stage:

Then I spent tons of time aligning it up and tacking it. :rob

Like this.

Eventually I got it to look like this:
CIMG8708.JPG

With some elbow grease and some emery cloth I gave it a once over. I wanted all of the exhaus to look the same. :blagblah
CIMG8711.JPG

Then it was time to get it back onto the bike.

There were two things that kind of puzzled me. The first one was that I had to angle the radiator away to get good access to the header nuts. It's easy once you take away the plastic.

Then I had to figure out where the O2 sensor was conncted to. Turns out it's hiding behind the rectifier. Here..

And there it is.

Anyway, took me "half a Sunday" to gut the exhaust. Then it too me "most of a Sunday" plus "a bit of an evening" to fit it to the bike. However, I did a lot of cleaning and polishing that isn't necessary (well, to me it is crucial as all parts I take off the bike gets washed and cleaned before they go back on).

There's tons more photos in the Picasa, sorry, Google- album. :thumb2

So, how does it sound? Glad you asked, like this:

Flames! :clap

How does it ride? Ummm... a little better I guess. :eek I've been running a Beowulf can with the baffle in and now there's no cat. It's livelier than CrazyCaz's standard set up, it does pull better. But I wouldn't say it's huge difference. It does seem like it's a bit happier going a bit faster. It is however, even louder than before, not offensively loud, but you can't sneak past a doughnut eater at 110mph without him squeezing out the jam. :blast

Worth doing? :nenau Up to you? It's been an interesting project for me as I like tinkering. :thumb2  After today's blast I'll keep it on, fo'sho'.

If you've got any questions, feel free to ask. :bounce1 Big thanks to mark71! :thumb2:thumb2

I didn't seem to have all that faff (post 114) :D

:beerjug:

Man! I should have read all 362 posts before attempting mine. :friday Then I could have larfed at you taking the stuff off at the top of the bike. :eek and i wouldn't have had to drill the POS out. :blast :blast :rob

So, next one that tries this; Cut on the inside of the cat-welds. :thumb2
:bow And leave the stuff on the top alone. :D :blagblah

Anyway, I had a nice time in the garage. :comfort

:thumb2

Ha ... That was me :thumb
No garage but I was enjoying myself and when I' enjoying myself I just don't know when to stop

:beerjug:

Edit .... and I only cut inside the weld by pure good luck :aidan

Gutted Muffler

Hey guys,

I actually gutted the muffler istead of tu cat, sounds amazing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzzwmdqoj3k

It was pretty simple, nor I just need to paint it black! Mayby I will look for a stock muffler for touring, but that one is mean as F*ck :) I have some pictures of the inside if anyone is interested!

Scorpion Stainless Oval F650GS

Just thought i'd add a line as there's no mention of their new one here and the YouTube vids are not really that helpful (it doesn't sound like any of them!)

Had the Scorpion can for about a week and it's perfect. At startup it's not necessarily louder but is of a fuller, deeper tone (so my neighbours are relieved!) However going through the range it opens and sounds heaps better. These were pretty much the characteristics i was aiming for after i'd heard an Akrapovic.

It fits the look of the bike (Having done some looking I'm pretty sure they now only come with the compact outlet as opposed to the pipe style outlet) And for those purists among you the sticker comes off with ease and leaves no tack behind (though i removed mine before first firing)

It is a fair bit smaller than stock (about half the weight) though because of the link pipe the end is actually sits only a few inches shorter than where the stock does (unlike the older one displayed fitted on Scorpion website which looks about the same length) It also tucks in better at the side.

For those of you that use covers - it cools much quicker than stock exhaust too.

It comes with the usual link pipe setup and it's own hanger that appear well made and are certainly very easy to install. On which note - the original hanger bolt was fairly well rusted in so it may be worth a squirt of GT85 before attempting.

Scorpion site -

http://www.scorpion-exhausts.com/product-details.html?autoid=115

- i like the fact that at about +0.73 HP Scorpion make no great claims to awesome power gains! That said the dyno graph is for an 800 not 658 - whether power change would be much different i don't know.

Another step closer to the end of the farkle road :augie

Is there a sum up somewhere with all available exhausts for the 800?

Something maybe with prices, loudness, how nice the noise is etc?

Before i did the above post i looked but couldn't find one though in all fairness loudness and nice noise can be measured but remain fairly subjective.

As a short list i remember (roughly in price order, roughly because there are so many options within each brand and savings to be had from various sources)

Akropovic
Remus
Leo Vince
MIVV
Blue Flame
Scorpion (which is also Metal Mule)
GPR
Beowulf
Fuel

As i recall only the Akro was reported as quieter (until you start going through the rev range)

Best,

S

So, which one would you recommend out this list:

Leo Vince
MIVV
Blue Flame
Scorpion (which is also Metal Mule)
GPR
Beowulf
Fuel

I'm looking to buy one and I am thinking of the Leo Vince, MIVV or Scorpion !!

It's difficult to recommend one above another because it really depend on what you want. I don't believe any offer significant power gains - after all these are not race tuned bikes. In terms of noise/sound - everyone is a bit different and i don't think anyone has sat down with each exhaust and a sound level meter going through the rev range.

My best advice is to find someone local with an after market and go riding with them. I went with the Scorpion having randomly met an F8GS rider on a jolly to Brighton. I had heard the Akro and Beowulf. The Akro was quiet but had a nice sound when going. The Beowulf was a fair bit louder than stock even just on tickover. A friend has a Fuel can for his CB1300 and again it's loud. Another has a Blue Flame on his GSXR750 and again i would consider this to be loud (all these had baffles in) In answer to your original comments of preference i've not heard a MIVV or LeoV in the flesh so can't comment but would recommend the Scorpion as per my previous post #370.

Best of luck with you choice,

S

PS I wouldn't rely on any YouTube videos to measure sound as they are not at all accurate compared to real life sound.

Thanks for that, How does it sound & How bike perform (i.e Petrol, HP, etc)
I think Quill are not far away from me, I can pay them a visit..
Thanks again
