► GPS mounts/connections and Autocomm (consolidated)

:thumb2 Nice one.
Do you like the RAM mount for your Zumo? Can't decide where I'm going to locate mine.

Yeah I think I want to stick with the RAM mount. I have a TT cradle and I thought about the TT mount or a crossbar to mount it on. However, I live in London and the TT solutions are fine if you want to leave the mount on the bike all the time (and for longer adventures) but to my mind its one more sparkle for a thief.

I prefer to remove the mount most of the time, I only use the GPS on longer journeys.

Not keen on the position of the Zumo at the moment - it doesn't block the dials or anything but it offends my sense of symmetry. Our very own Terry Ryan is sending me a bigger U Bolt to mount in the centre of the bars.

Also, I just got hold of a phone with GPS, so I am thinking about an Aquabox that I can throw on the RAM mount for those little/short round town journeys when I don't know where I am going.

We've got the same issues. I'm probably not going with the TT option either. I'm hoping I can get a RAM mount screwed on down towards the bottom left hand side of the windshield. Don't think it'll foul the handlebars. We'll see when mine arrives later this month.

Ps. Live in Docklands, often abroad on business, new phone with GPS, ride (or waiting to ride) an F800GS... you and I need to have a beer some time! :beerjug:

RAM Mount

You might be interested in a relatively simple way of mounting a RAM mount using the mounting posts for the Touratech hand protectors. Self explanitory from the photos.

Touratech Handguards

Scorpion,
Do the TT handguards have a metal insert or are they all plastic?

humm .... jus' like the 08 model of 12GSA ... must be standardisation happening .. 28mm in middle section tapering inwards, very noticeable when casting yer eye along the handlebar profile.. and I've noticed since start of the 08' biker season, RAM u-bolt mount kits have both 1" and 1.25" u-bolts

Which is our very obviously placed GPS connector. To connect your GPS unit to this can-bus controlled switched supply that stays on for a few minutes when you turn the engine off, you will part number 80 00 0 611 656 from your friendly local BMW Dealer:

To make the cable, follow Stumpy's excellent instructions on this thread

Fantastic post....thanks, very helpful to those of us new to bike electrics etc. :beerjug:

One question (which may be daft ) but I've ordered the part above to make up my cable for the Zumo, at same time can I wire in an autocom to that same connector ???

Yes, according to my dealer that socket will provide up to 5 amps, far more than required for both the Autocom and Zumo. I've soldered the power leads for both Zumo and Autocom to that type of lead. By doing this I think you reduce the chance of getting interference on the system because you are taking the negative for both from the same point (thereby reducing ground loop interference).

I have lost the power cable for my zumo, so is this the one I need to connect it directly to the wiring?

Also, does anyone have any pictures of the touratech mount on the 650/800 ( I have seen photos of it, but not on the bike) and exactly what parts would i need to fit it? I already have the Garmin mount supplied with the Zumo but want something a bit more neat.

Not a lot of room under there. On the Single 650GS the tail piece had a bit of space, which is now loaded with this:

I don't know if that is alarm or ECU. If you have a F800GS with no alarm, tell us if you have this box :beerjug:

Hope that helps someone :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

I have an F800 GS without the alarm and there is no box. I used the space to pop my autocom in there. I was going to wire it up myself but BMW started bleeting about me messing up the ABS. I didnt believe I would mess up the ABS.

As I had ordered a Scottoiler to be fitted during its first service and they subsequently forgot to actually order the damn Scottoiler :spitfire I said the least they could do was wire up my Autocom. :mcgun

Doesn't your autocom fit in the 'designed' space between the airbox and the battery under the fake tank panel?

Autocom on F800GS

Hi guys
Mrs Spannerman has just taken delivery of her new 800gs,and i am now wondering where to fit the autocom on the bike, has anyone already done htis if so where seems to be the place to fit it ?:nenau

Autocom

Cheers Tim
I will have a look by the battery and see if it looks big enough.
Have been busy today, fitting a scott oiler, and bmw bashplate,oh and putting a few miles on it,as the good lady has been busy herself,it feels like a moped at the side of my 1200adv,but it pulls like a train, cant wait till its run in so i can give it some stick:thumb

designated space

I didn't realise there was a designated space until I took the fake tank panel off to wire up the GPS. That said I like where it is under the seat because the pillion cable doesnt have to stretch too far and like wise my cable has plenty of reach. I cal also add or remove the ipod with ease and turn the volume up or down. Getting under the fake tank panel is not a quick job.

where to put radio?

I have asked the question on "communications" but it is probably better placed here.
I am putting kenwood radios and an autocom system on my F650GS. The autocom will go in the designated (?) place under the false tank, but where is the best place to put the radios? I am guessing under the seat, but in the rectangular space near the back or above the circular hollow nearer the front?

storage space

i don't know if anyone has spotted this already i did while changing my pannier racks. if you get down on your knees and look up under the rear wheel just over the number plate there is a rectangular panel held in place with one torx bolt. remove the cover and there is a space here. i don't know what it's for but maybe it could be used for something.
