Handle bar grips

I currently punt around on an F800GS, having down sized from an R1200GS.
Both machines are fitted with heated grips, which I find are too skinny, with the rubber of the grip prone to becoming smooth with a lack of purchase on the throttle side. I've tried various things, bicycle handlebar covering wrapped in duck tape, etc, but nothing seems to work long term. I made enquires if the fat wubbery grips used on the R1100-50 series could be used, only to be told that the throttle connection was incompatible. Any ideas out there?

1200GS clamp size/alignment

I fitted the 1200GS handguards last night and had an issue with the left and right hand clamps not a large enough diameter for the F800 handlebar

How did you get round this - 'encourage' the clamp to be the right diameter?

Wunderlich vs. AC Schnitzer Levers

Hi All. Does anybody have a view on adjustable levers? Looking at the Wunderlich offering and the AC Schnitzer... is the latter worth the extra money? One concern with the Wundelich is the comfort on the length adjustable bit of the lever... does this feel strange through gloves? Cheers, Andy

I like mine... great looking bling but also practical

Wunderlich adjustable levers

Very pleased with my Wunderlich levers. You can adjust the length precisely to fit your finger spacing. They are very comfortable with gloves.

I had the same issue when I fitted the 1200 guards to my 650, in the end, I found that a couple of wraps of electrical tape padded the bars out enough to let the clamp grip properly and by doing this, you stop any damage to the handlebars

Barkbuster Storm

Just replaced my barbuster standard plastics with the new 'Storm' ones;






Looks like they'll give better winter weather protection and it's a doddle to swap them with the original ones (literally 2 mins) which will now be the fair weather ones.

I like 'em... and cheap as chips as well.

They work well with the Metal Mule, (Powerbronze), Screen - with about 3/4" clearance each side on full lock.

I just took delivery of the Kaoko throttle lock today, and installed it along with the Touratech hand guards I've had sitting around for a while. Installation was a breeze, and I managed to get in a short test ride before the Oregon rain hit again. Works like a charm, and the guards do a great job of keeping my hands out of the wind. I've always gone with Throttlemeister with my other bikes. But they don't have one that works with anyone's hand guards yet. I think the Kaoko is easier to use.

Hi Woodworks, how is the vibration with the kaoko, does it have any weight to it?

Looks like the TT hand guard and Kaoko TLock are the only combination that works on the 800gs for now. I know barkbusters is working on it but nothing ready as of today.

It's been a while since I installed it, but if I recall correctly, the Kaoko throttle lock is weighted the same as the left side (BMW) bar end. And I may be the wrong person to ask about vibes, because they never bothered me before or after the installation of the throttle lock.

Ok - since someone pooh-poohed my bargain basement Acerbis handguards a while ago, I thought I'd take the time to pretty things up a little...

First thing on the shopping list was a set of 1200GS countersunk bar-end thingies (what's the proper name for them anyway?). I bunged them in the lathe and turned off the small locating flange on the inside. Then I took the bar-end weights and put them into the lathe too and turned out the countersink. Stage 3 was grinding out a small portion of the new profile to accept the handguard. Threaded everything together..et voila! Finished, functional, presentable and best of all very very cheap..!

Vibration issue

Now i've run the F800 in, i've done a couple of faster runs. Previously, i was ok with an >2 hour run at <65mph. Now i'm able to get to 70(ish) (~4500rpm), after 45 mins my right hand is numb and i can't accuratly feel/control my thumb and index finger, which makes indicating and cancelling a PITA. When i gently touch the front break lever with the tips of my fingers, there is a strong vibration, which i don't feel so strongly through the grips, but expect this is the cause.

I've added the 1200GS larger hand guards, so this should not have caused any bar end weight issues...

Is this something i'll get used to, or do i need to start to add weight

I was concerned with the vibration making right hand numb, but the vibes are no problem now...they disappeared after about 350 miles on clock...run in now no vibes with barkbusters on or off...

Bar Risers

Im lazy and i didnt feel like reading through eleven pages of threads for the bar risers info. (why doesnt the moderator spend some time and consolidate alot of these massive posts to take out the 'twoddle', not a criticism, a suggestion)

Anyway i bought some TT risers and followed the instructions (how hard can it be).... and im sorry but there just seems to be too much movement with them, surely this cant be right.... I do know how to take a bike to pieces so its not a dummass thing, i checked... twice....

Anyone else fitted these and actually got them tightenned up solid?

I have just fitted mine (bought at touratech event last weekend) the bars clamps are rubber mounted and the risers exagerate this slightly. I only fitted mine tonight which was only made more awkward by my zumo mount.

Just fitted 1 set yesterday and was slightly worried about the amount of play. After some thought though the play is only in the rubber mounting and the bolts are done up tight. I know someone else posted somewhere theirs was the same and all that happened was it reduced the vibration in the handlebars

PS Went to install a set on my missus bike tonight and one of the handlebar clamp bolts started to strip the thread ... Bollox Thankfully it managed to tight back up enough straight away so she'll have to wait until we get back and have harressed BMW under warranty.

riser install

I have felt the same thing as other regarding the rubber mounting. When I installed mine, I had no one to help so what I did was use a couple of long kayak down straps over a roof joist. I lightly tensioned them to hold the bars then I removed original bolts. Then just tugged them up a bit then added the risers. Worked great.

Took my 800 out on sunday afternoon and the risers work great, nicer riding position and far more comfortable as risers also bring bars slightly closer to the rider so sat more upright. Great bit of kit that actually improves the bike.
