anyone tried barsnake?

divingshops are told to have cheaper lead balls

Yeah you can buy pouches for weight belts with lead shot in them. They look like heavy bean bags.

Thing is, you really only need the weight in the bar ends, not the extra 1kg of lead in the middle of the bars. (Google "bar flap" for explanation of why!) I don't have this problem myself but if I did I'd be looking for a solution other than lead shot.

I'd be looking for a solution other than lead shot.

which model might do the job on F 800 GS?, im not good at inches..., or does the liquid model fit.

"Bar Snake Model ST-1. Fits most standard steel non high rise bars of 7/8" outside diameter. Most steel bars should be about 23/32" inside diameter and 40" long. $34.95

Bar Snake Model AL-2. Fits most aluminum crossbrace handlebars with 7/8" outside diameter, internal diameter of 9/16 and 40" long.
$28.95

Bar Snake Model HD-3 Fits most 1-inch external diameter handlebars (Harley) with 7/8-inch internal handlebar diameter. Excluding ape-hangers/buckhorn/multi-curved bars, etc, and up to 40-inches long. **Special Note to Harley owners:** Check thoroughly for dimples and other obstructions that may be in your handlebars before purchase.
$39.95

Bar Snake Model LV-4. Liquid Bar Snake for handle bars with kinks, bends, or wires and cables running through them. The Liquid Bar Snake can be poured into tubular handlebars and sets in four hours. The Liquid Bar Snake can be used in all tubular handlebars, but is especially intended for pro-taper handlebars, multi-curved handlebars, such as buckhorns or ape-hangers, or handlebars which have cables running through them. In short, wherever a standard solid Bar Snake cannot be easily used. Model LV-4 contains enough fluid to fill a 7/8-inch external diameter handlebar up to 40 inches long.
$49.95.

Bar Snake Model LV-5. Same as LV-4, but more fluid for 1-inch external diameter handlebar up to 52-inches long.
$59.95. "

Not sure whether this would work well given the 800's tapering bars??

seems not to be easy to find a good solution, you who have used lead balls how much weight did the lead approximately add?, easy to apply/remove? open one side of the bar and lean the bike? same to remove?

Green lane riding in the Peak District earlier this month without hand guards I quickly learned to hug the left-hand side of the track. It doesn't matter if branches snag the left side clutch lever but snagging the right side front brake lever is another matter.

I was fed up waiting for the metal protector part of the 650/800 handguards to come in, so asked Coopers Tunbridge Wells if I could do a 'try before you buy' installation of the big brother GS handguards.

Yes, they fit. :thumb And even better news, they are cheaper than the 650/800 guards. :beerjug:

You keep the existing bar ends, so no vibration problem. The ring clamp on the handlebar is very slightly loose (the 1200GS bar must be a bit bigger) so I will put some tape underneath. I would normally do this anyway to avoid scratches.

Tim

Thanks Tim!
Do the guards contact the windscreen when turning lock-to-lock?

No (and that's the high touring windscreen).

Tim

Well done, Tim. They look good with your silver trim, too.

Makes you wonder why on earth they produced the others for the 800?

Tim, as an aside, I see you use a throttle rocker. Dunno if you keep it on in the dirt but I was using one and it contributed to a big off when I was in deep gravel - somehow it got in the way and I couldn't shut the throttle when I was standing on the pegs trying to pick my way between some big rocks....

Thanks for the warning Chris. I can see how that would happen. I push it all the way down for short distances offroad, but will take it off when we're doing the Pyrenees event.

I have the Wunderlich throttle lock on my 1200GSA and was planning to transfer it across to the F650GS but the bars are different internally. :(

Tim

Tim, are they those handguards off a 2008 1200GS?
Frank

HI Tim

Will the normal/standard clutch and break levers work with the R1200 hand guards?

Tim, I too would like to fit those same handguards on my F800GS. Which ones are those? GS1200? Any year?

Alex

I believe Tim C is on his Pyrenees trip. I'm pretty sure those handguards are from the 2008 1200GS because they are two-tone, changed for '08 model year. Earlier guards were matte black. I'm going to buy them too as soon as the dealer can tell me how much? :blast

The hand protector set is $169 and what they call the "hand guard large upper section" is $28 each (left + right). I suppose these are the grey spoilers on Tim's pictures.

Both options are intended for an F800GS:
1.- F800GS Handguards (steel bar and small protectors)
2.- R1200GS Handguards (all plastic)

Both options are supposed to fit (Tim shared pictures of his F650GS with R1200GS handguards fitted). My take is that the F800GS handguards offer better crash protection and the R1200GS handguards offer better weather protection.

Tim
And they look much better then those that BMW ship for the 800 which is mounted to low to offer a good wind protection. When the fall comes i'm thinking of replacing mine with the ones for the 12GS

Hi

Can anyone with Vario levers tell me how much closer the levers will be to the handlebar ( in the closest position) compaired with the original levers.
fishburger

I've put the Wunderlich vario levers on my F800ST but the levers are identical for the F650/800GS. They bring the levers closer (in closest position) by around 1.5cm - it's made a brilliant difference in comfort/control for my size 6.5/7 hands - and I get to transfer them to my new F650GS when it arrives in September! The adjustable length of the lever itself also gives some further fine tuning in distance from the bars.

Avril

Hi
Thank you for the a fast answer, and the one that I was hoping for(1.5cm)
My order is in for the black\silver ones.
Cheers
Fishburger

Dear Sir,

unfortunately there are no Vario Lever for your model at the moment.

Parts are still in production, just as the catalogue for F800 GS/S.

So please be patiently.

With Kind regards

Team Wunderlich

Hi
as shown above, not yet ready for the F800,will have to wait.

Clutch levers and fitting

on the 4th of July I dropped my F800GS and snapped the end off my clutch lever. I ordered a new one from Williams BMW in Manchester and they said there will be no stock until 22nd of August in the UK or Germany. I think this is pretty ridiculous for something like a clutch lever.

My questions are this.

  • Do other Clutch Levers fit the F800GS
  • Are the delivery times from Wunderlich as slow as BMW?
  • Are clutch levers easy to fit?
  • Has anyone any experience of the Wunderlich Vario lever?

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Jon:thumb

Ahem ...

... yes the Vario levers fit, two days delivery from NN, make a world of difference to those with small hands, and are very well made :thumb

True to form

Nippy Normans have dispatched the vario levers! Well done Nippy Normans... shame on you BMW!

I'm guessing a clutch lever is a relatively easy thing to fit. :augie

I've googled bar flap and cant find anything on it. What is it and what are the symptoms.

cheers

Welcome to the land of Tossers Avril... good to have you along. All in anticipation of GS ownership eh :thumb

Tim C Does the higher screen really work? The wind noise off the standard 800GS screen is horrendous... even with good quality custom earplugs

have made 700 km on my bike now and do seem to need anything to reduce the vibrations as I suspected, but have not been on some serious touring yet, lost the first screw from the bike, one of that holds the headlight....

lead shot for bar vibration........

ZZ10 do a search for 'solution for handlebar vibration'

Fishburger came up with this fix (post #10 in the above thread) see below if you still cant find it :- :bounce1

Jonnie Boy:
Danged if I can find Fishburger's thread

I like the idea!

Two thoughts:

1) I am guessing that the lead is not needed in the central portion of the bars so some weight and $$$ could perhaps be saved by stuffing the center section of the bars with a lightweight filler first ... here in the USA they sell foam weatherstripping material that has a round cross-section. A piece of that stuff of the appropriate length could be pushed into the center of the bars & then load the lead shot in from each end...

2) lead BBs have to be very round and precisely manufactured or they will jam the gun, it might save some $$$ again if instead of buying lead BBs that we buy lead shot used for reloading shotgun shells (or as someone else pointed out the lead shot used in some SCUBA diving weight belts). Since that type shot is not made to exacting tolerances...

Thanks,
Jim

fitted the barsnake tonight just letting it set
seems easy enough to use
got a syringe and poured the barsnake solution into syringe
and got the bike on an angle side stand handle bars turned to left
chocked the front wheel up slightly to get more of a angle for bars
and injector my handle bars (also put a sheet over the tank just in case good move)

some of the solution went into throttle bit
so I run some oil around the inner bit to stop solution from
setting be careful to get any down the inside of bars

more to follow will be Sunday now as I am away tomorrow
all day session :augie

BMW Hand guards

I have the BMW 650/800 hand guards, with the spoilers, and would agree with a previous comment on the differences between the current possibilities.
The solid BMW 650/800 handguards are more 'crash bars' than wind deflectors.
I dropped the bike while on a moderate off-road outing, although it was stationary at the time :blast, and the 650/800 hand guards paid for themselves on the spot. The fall was broken by the pillion footpegs, and the handguards. No damage whatsoever. Not even a scratch!
