► Hand Guards, handlebars, risers and levers

I have fitted the BMW handguards to my F800GS and have now purchased the extra hand protectors to fit to them but I'm confused as the hand protectors come with two holes, two bolts and no instructions and the original plastic handguards that they are supposed to fit to don't have matching holes. Can anyone who has fitted these tell me if I am supposed to drill the holes myself or whether I have the wrong handguards in place.

I hope that has made some sort of sense

Thanks

Adrian

BMW Spoilers for BMW handguards

Yep, Mine didnt come with any instructions either !
What you have to do is separate the left and right hand spoliers by fitting them snug to the top of your handguards and basically drill through the existing handguards. Fit the screws and thats the job done.

Bradders,

Thanks - I thought that was what you had to do and being rubbish at DIY the wife has already booked me a place in intensive care :)

Barkbuster pics?

placed my order tonight for the barkbusters.Went for the silver / gun metal colour to match my bike. will post a photo when installed.:thumb

Any joy with those pics?? I'd be interested in some close ups to see how much wind protection the might offer and how adjustable they are.

TT Hand Guards & Kaoko Throttle Lock

I just took delivery of the Kaoko throttle lock today, and installed it along with the Touratech hand guards I've had sitting around for a while. Installation was a breeze, and I managed to get in a short test ride before the Oregon rain hit again. Works like a charm, and the guards do a great job of keeping my hands out of the wind. I've always gone with Throttlemeister with my other bikes. But they don't have one that works with anyone's hand guards yet. I think the Kaoko is easier to use. :thumb

Got my Barkbusters fitted earlier this week which took no more than 30 minutes...

Did nearly 300 miles yesterday with these in max temp of 10 degrees and coupled with the heated grips no problem at all. Didn't even have winter gloves on - just a pair of leather Alpine Stars SP1 (from my recently departed rice rocket days).

Very pleased with them and infinitely better service and delivery from Adventure Spec than from Tourathingy.

(IMHO I reckon they look the dogs danglies as well:thumb2)

Foam grips

Has anyone installed or ever used foam grips on their F800/F650? If so which did you choose to use?

My hands tend to get a little numb after a while and someone mentioned to me that foam grips could help.

Any advice would be appreciated

MUFFS!

Did a quick search couldnt find anything in these threads, so, anyone got any? what make? do they fit right? do they work? any pics? anyone know where to get them?

Val H. is the vendor in these parts.
Dunno if there would be any fitting issues with your new steed, I can't imagine there would be.
I've got Tucano Urbano or something, bought from St. Eptoe a few years back. I hate winter gloves because they're too bulky and make my hands stupid, and muffs mean I can wear my summer gloves all year round. I seldom need to trouble the heated grip switch either, unless it's really cold.
You should have said something the other day, I think there were more with muffs than without at The Riverside.
Buy some, you won't regret it.
I might buy some more for the Airhead.

Barkbuster hand guards, what fits?

I believe that some barkbusters will fit the 800gs, but i don't know what model and last time i checked there web page did not say either.

Any help, has anyone fitted them?

Heated Grips 800GS

I bought a secondhand 800gs without heated grips
I fell down when my local dealer quoted circa £400 to buy and fit genuine BMW (there is a lot of programming time to make the grips work sir!!)

Being a bit of an electrical luddite as far as canbus goes If i bought the oxford grips (my colleague has them on an Africa Twin and they have a very low power consumption) could i wire them into the back of accessory socket and would they then work only when the key is switched on.

I could wire them direct to battery but if i forgot to switch them off or fiddling fingers switched them on whilst parked they would drain the battery.
I could also wire them direct to battery through a hidden plug and unplug when parked but would really like to wire so they can only be operated when the key is switched on.

If you've got the new style Oxford heated grips you should be able to wire them directly to the battery as the new controller senses the voltage across the battery and will switch off when the engine isn't running. The new style controller looks like this-

The cost of retro fitting the heated grips at the dealer isn't down to the programming of the canbus, it's the parts themselves that are very pricey.

Due to the nature of the design of the original hand grips, it's far from a simple job to fit Oxford heated grips. The best / easiest aftermarket type to fit are Symtecs.

I've fitted them to my Megamoto, there is an accessory plug (ignition switched for the GPS etc) I believe it's under the small panel by the ignition switch on the 800, and this saves the need for them to be wired to the battery with the potential for a flat battery.

Here's a couple of links that should explain it.
