HANDGUARDS,F800GS ERR HELP

Does anyone know if GS1200 or even GS1200 adventure handguards will go on an F800GS???? I already have the standard BMW OEM handguards, and their extended wind protectors on 800, but I just wondered if the above can be done??? I seem to be doing a lot of motorway miles, and although the OEM 800 handguards dont do too bad a job, I wondered if the 1200 GS or GS Adventure ones might just be a tad better. Also surprised that if you fit the extended OEM wind deflectors you have to drill holes in your nice new shiny plastic to get them on. Drilling 4 holes is not a problem for me,but I have to say I'm somewhat surprised especially when you consider I've just paid £101 for them. I'd also like to be able to do the above with the minimum of hacking and sawing if possible. If all esle fails im going to obtain a heat gun and just attach 2 strips, one above and one below the fittings I already have, on both sides naturally!!!!!

P.S. This is not in the wrong bit ive posted virtually the same post in 800 and 1200 sections so that I might get the best of both worlds with regards to replies/information...

Also have the BM guards + deflectors ..... came fitted to the bike. TBH wouldn't have been my first choice. Find that even with the deflectors attached, there's still insufficient protection to the upper part of the hands!
It's impossible to rotate the whole fitting upwards as the guard bars foul with the other handlebar gear!

So attempted to remedy this with a DIY jobby ...... made some taller deflectors by recycling a used black plastic oil can :D. The thickness /flexibility of the can's two side panels was ideal ..... just a matter of playing around for a while experimenting with some card templates.

Doesn't look too bad and has certainly improved the effectiveness of the guards at minimal cost. :thumb2

Holy Handlebars Batman! Drop = bent riser bolt...

Not sure if anyone has had this happen. Today out on a ride, silly lanes on silly tyres, grass rut, you know the score, dropped bike, hardly moving, no damage to bike at all, piss take all round, soft landing on grass, band aid on pride.

However i instantly noticed that my bars werent stright, you know the kind of thing and after closer inspection the right hand riser was angled closer towards me than the left hand one, therefore making the bars out of alignment.

The risers seem to fit onto a thread which potruded below the upper crown of the forks, secured by a 15mm hex nut, the crown is sandwished between the riser and the nut with 2 rubber(?) washers. (the nut when turned just rotates the thread too, which means probably going to have to take the bars off and see how it is secured).

It seemed really weak to me that this should bend at such a pathetic 'get off'. Im thinking if this is whats meant to happen (a bend not break thing) then everyone would be having this happen....

So.... Anyone had this happen, how did you solve it? I'm kinda hoping its simply a case of gettin the riser off and replacing the bolt and rubber 'washers'.

R1200gs/gsa hand gaurds off the 08 bikes fit straight onto f650/f800 gs's,I had Darren at Vines fit them including vat for £100 all in,if you try like we did to fit them, those bar end weights are a massive torx bit and f**king tight, knacker those end bits and you will ned a new set of bars,a whole lot of time and money spent sorting the problem out,let the dealer fit them at a small price.

This has happened to me many times. I just push it back to the right position and ride on. No big deal. I think this is far better than bending the bar.

Push it back, i know i mentioned batman but are you superman, or do you have a long crowbar cus it aint exactly easy to push!:nenau

Using a T55 torx bit should easily remove the bar weight ends, it did on my bike. As you say, they were a little tight but nothing to worry about.

Pidcocks had an 800GS with GSA handguards on it for sale, so yeh apparently they do fit, the bar stewards said they didnt know if they would fit when i bought mine or i would have had them instead of the non wind deflecting stock items... grrrr

Since it's the bar mounting bolt that's bent, all you need to do is loosen the bar clamps and turn it around until the mount centers again. Standard issue with any trail bike.

HOW MUCH???? NOT MUCKING FUCH!!!!

hmmm very strange.mine were really rather a piece of p*ss to fit, I think they took me 15 minutes all in. I guess i might just have been lucky. The OEM handguards+ wind deflectors arent too bad, but I just want MORE wind protection thus looking at the ones off a GSA or a GS. Ive JUST spent over a hundred quid on the OEM items. so another £100 is sort of out of the question. I'd really like to do a "Here's one i made earlier " job and err "BODGE" it temporarily, but im a bit stuck on what I might get away with using, etc etc.. I know that it has been done, and I'm hoping someone might post some pictures on here so that I can get some more ideas. I dont think this is helped by the fact that I ride with 2 fingers covering the brake lever either.

I shall wait and see if anyone is kind enough to post some pictures/instructions regarding their"ALTERNATIVES".:blagblah:blagblah

Does anyone know if the 1200GS handguards will clear a touratech windscreen on full lock??

I put 1200GS hand guards on my 800GS and they fit a treat. Cheaper too..:)

I just fitted some to mine and they are superior to the oxfords. (see in gs mods) I actually brought that oxford set shown above to fit but they were a bit crap to be honest (imoh) with the cables coming out at annoying locations. The symtecs are so discreet they are brilliant.

If you did go down the oxford route though, be careful... in the instructions it stated that it only automatically switched off after the voltage of the battery dropped below 11.5 volts ... i dont remember it mentioning automatically switching off with the ignition. Unless someone wants to correct me?

Actually i took it apart just now and the bolt isnt bent, but theres a sleeve inside the rubber bushes that i think moved about on impact, take it all out, put it back in, hey presto, straight bars again... This must be such a common occurance, at least i know what to do now.:thumb

I think I may have mentioned that the thing to do was to loosen it up, jiggle it about, retighten and it would be fine:augie

Glad all is OK and it was nothing serious:thumb

That was exactly what I was trying to tell you the bolts usually do not bend So you really do not have to be related to to superman at all to just force the back to the right position by hand. Give it a try next time. :augie
