► Hand Guards, handlebars, risers and levers

HANDGUARD DIMENSIONS PLEASE PEOPLE!!??

Basically the ideal people to help me with this would be anyone who has the exact dimensions of 1200gs or gs adventure handguards/wind deflectors, and someone who also has the dimensions for f800 gs handguards/wind deflectors. i'm trying to find the bigger of the 2 and then fit them to my 800, as although they are ok, they are not really as good as they could be if they were bigger. I know they are primarily designed to stop you leaving all your skin on the nearest branch/tree/skip/hedgerow, but if they help you keep yer hands warm as well then thats a bonus. If no-one can help then I guess I'll just have to go to a showroom, and do some side by side comparisoning type stuff, with a tape measure etc.. Would also help me if you would PM me with any useful findings, photos, info, anything like that in fact.

I seem to miss a lot of the new posts so PM'ing me direct would be absolooootely fan bleedin tastic.

P.S. Some clarification required here, me thinks. When I say "HANDGUARDS" I actually mean the proper BMW approved type things to include the dimensions of any extra BMW "deflectors" as generally available, or not, over the counter.

I should be clear--I'm an architect, and horribly picky about design. I drive myself crazy at times. Creates all sorts of problems with my wallet too. That's why I have Metal Mule panniers--looked around, carefully considered, and felt for my purposes they were the best out there, and couldn't bring myself to settle for less. Same goes for the Adv-Spec bars. I think they're the best protection out there, and I chose to go for what I think is the better function over the more elegant TT bars. It's all speculation at this point. I suspect as more of us get some miles on these bikes the best approach will become clearer.

I had the BMW handguards on my Xchallenge, and definitely field tested them.... So I went that route for my F800GS as well. The downside of them for me is that (at least the way I have them now) I can't lower the angle of the levers enough to get the proper angle for standing up. If I rotate the bars down enough to get the levers in the right place, the handguards no longer provide the wind protection I want. Also, I've got some nerve thing going on that makes me particularly susceptible to vibration, and I have noticed some additional vibration since I fitted them. I think that could be because the stock steel bar ends are replaced with lighter aluminum ones. I am going to try the Touratech guards next.

This is good information. have you or anyone else used/considered using the barkbuster kit from ADV S?

Has anyone used these and how well are they mounted? (the photos have good mounting photo) are they priced well as apposed to TT?

I've fitted the Barkbusters from Adv Spec along with a Metal Mule (PowerBronze) screen;

They work well together and full lock each way is still achieved with a bit to spare.

The clamp for the Barkbuster near the headstock is also ideal for fixing a zumo 550 using the standard U bolt clamp included in the zumo package;

OEM Handguards

Hi all,
Does anyone have a few good photos of how the factory hand gaurds are mounted. i think they are a 2 piece set, id lik to see how they mount to the bars.

Maybe Rob in Seattle may have some photos..

I had the same thing - it would be great if there was a simple solution to this. Previous threads talked of "bar snakes" and filling the handlebars with lead shot. All of which to me seemed to add unnecessary weight.
Could someone not bring out a revised bar end weight and longer bolt??? :rob

Here you go lilgs:

The guards are the bars and the plastic. Each bit has to be ordered separately. The plastic is in two pieces. This is the "large" guard plus the "spoiler."

The inboard attachment is pretty close to the mirror mount. Something to consider if you've got other stuff (like an aux light switch) you want to put there.

Happy with BarkBusters but minor issues

I have fitted a set of BarkBusters to my F650 (from Twisted Throttle). Fitting is easy and I am pleased with the final result. My right one was bent slightly differently from the left one but it is fairly easy to adjust the aluminum mounts to your satisfaction in a big vice. I also modified mine to fit more tightly to the Wunderlich levers by taking ~11mm off the inboard mounting stubs and using shorter bolts. This also helped them almost clear the Cee Bailey windscreen I have mounted. They just touch the windscreen at full lock on each side. They were tested on 02Jan at -3C and I only needed the heated grips on the low setting.

Overall, recommended.

Regarding fitting handguards/barkbusters - what size Torx tool fits the bar ends? It's bigger than anything I've got at the moment and I'll need to order the tool in.
 
More importantly they take impact with the road very well too... big rear shunt sent me over the handle bars and the bike sliding down the road. Few scrapes on them but saved any serious damage and more importantly stopped any damage that prevented the bike being ridden away from the accident.

Did they bend out of shape or just scratched! I bent mine to the point of the clutch lever was touching. Tried straighting them, bloody hard going once they are twisted and bent. i will only recommend them for pure of road stuff not every day road and a little track. Plastic touratwat ok for that job. Barkbusters on a road bike...Simply overkill.

I did have a lok at the Touratech ones, but they seem a bit flimsy, and they cost more than the Barkbusters! :(
Most of my riding is onroad, so all I need is something to keep the wind off my hands, and something that won't fall apart if I was unfortunate enough to put it down the road.
 
Torque spec of F800GS handlebar clamps?

Hi gang,

I just picked up a set of ROX bar risers and am installing. Anyone know what the proper torque for the 8mm aluminum bolts should be (for the handlebar clamps)?
