► Hand Guards, handlebars, risers and levers

Stupid question, but is it possible for you to get the bike through the gate, one side of the handle bar at a time? Ie, turn the bars left, tilt the bike left, get the right side through, roll forward a touch, turn the bars right, tilt the bike right and get the right side through? Or are you only able to go through dead straight?

Handlebar Adjustment

I fitted hand guards and protectors but they seem a bit low and the wind still hits the top of my hands. I therefore tried to twist the throttle, mirror, brake, etc, fittings back to allow the hand guard to be tilted up a bit but they all seem to be stuck in a fixed position (yes, I loosened all the little nuts/bolts). So, last plan was undo the four bolts in the centre of the handlebar and tilt the whole bar back but that too seems fixed in one position. Am I doing something wrong here as I feel it should be possible to adjust the angle of all these bits?

You should be able to adjust them easily. I even used to ride with my lever sligthly loose when off-roading so they would twist if I went down (got hand guards now).
The handlebar is also easy to adjust. Both the handlebars and the levers have a white cross as a guideline of how they should be fitted as well. You can use that to make sure that you have both levers even.

Cheers.

I was told by a BMW Mech' that the L&R switch housings are fixed in position and cant be rotated (unlike the levers & handguards)!!?? :nenau Go figure!

Hi,

Have you go the hand guard spoilers fitted. Around £25.00 if I remember and the bolt on top of the standard large guards to offer much better wind protection.

:)

Right, that sounds about right. I only had the brake/clutch lever loose. I tried to get the throtle out once to cleaning it (it went down deep in sand once and was left very rough) but could not doing easily either. The brake/clutch levers are defenitively adjustable and very easy to do so too.

Cheers

:blast All sorted thank you, but I really don't know what I was thinking!! I had it in my head that I must move both the brake/clutch level AND the hand grippy bits together as there is a little notch to align both items which I had got fixated on. As you said, the brake/clutch levers are adjustable so I just went and adjusted them on their own and now the protectors/spoilers can be moved up and sit perfectly. Thanks so much for pointing this out :thumb2

Yes I have. BVM in Stroud advised me to have them too so I did.

Cross Brace for handlebars

Does anyone know of a removeable cross brace that will fit the F800gs handle bars ?
I want something lightweight ideally :thumb

I bought a Wunderlich handlebar brace from Nippy Normans, for about £19

GS12 Handguards on a 650 Twin

Does anyone know if the handguards off a GS12 will fit my 650 Twin? It would seem the GS12 ones deflect the cold winter wind more effctively than the BMW 650 ones. I know its summer but that wll end after the Hogroast! just you mark my words :rob

Do the BMW 12GS handguards protect the throttle cable?

...

You keep the existing bar ends, so no vibration problem. The ring clamp on the handlebar is very slightly loose (the 1200GS bar must be a bit bigger) so I will put some tape underneath. I would normally do this anyway to avoid scratches.

Tim:
I have the F658GS as well, and I'd like to keep the stock bar end weights so am drawn to the 12GS handguards. It is hard to tell from the angle of view in your pictures, but do the 12GS handguards come down low enough to protect the throttle cable as it makes that 90-degree turn exiting the grip assby in the event of a get-off that would otherwise expose this?

I saw an F800Gs at the dealer last week that looks like it took a light slide on the right side of the bike ... the throttle cable was busted as were some other important (and I'll bet expensive) gear on the end of the bar...

Thanks!

Hi Tim
I bought some 2nd hand 1200 h-guards for my 800 without realising there were different year models. Mine are different to yours and I can't get them to line up with wires etc. Do you know if it is only 2008 onwards that fit 800?
Cheers

2007 1200 Handguards onto 800

I answered my own question.......the older version of 1200 hanguards fit fine onto the 800gs. Took me 20 mins once I worked out the right way up! They go straight onto the bar ends and mount direct onto the mirror fixing.

Might be worth knowing if anyone wants to do same thing. These are the single colour (black) versions and are way bigger than the 800 ones, so more effective.
