I've got the 37/45l trax and the evo quick-lock frames. Great for motorways and weekends but bloody dangerous off road, IMHO.

I am looking at soft panniers now, like steel ponies or similar.

I could mount them over the Motech evo racks to keep them clear of exhaust and wheels...but I am wondering if the quick-connects and flat steel in the evo racks is up to the punishment of repeated drops.

I am looking at the holan racks which seem to be stronger construction, more attachment points (to the rear footpegs also) and less stealable :)

They do a trax version which I could use for soft or trax panniers.

Question is...in a spill will this transfer unncessary forces to the sub-frame and create problems? Is it better to have the more-breakable Evo racks to take the energy out of the impact? Hmm.

Apologies if this has been asked before! Tried searching for the answer but no luck!

Does anyone know whether the BMW adventure panniers for the 800 fit on the 650? I did like the look of the TRAX panniers but was put off by the racks marking the bike.

I intendet to ship the bike out to south America and ride to they need to be heavy duty. Any suggestions welcome:)

Cheers guys! :beerjug:

I fitted new Trax 37l panniers and frames to my 800GS last week, and the locking pins don't come anywhere near the bike's bodywork, like has been posted elsewhere, if thats what you mean by 'marking the bike'. I've just measured it, and there's about a 3-4 mm gap. I can only assume that Trax have adjusted the frames as a result of feedback.

Edited to add pics:

Further to the above post, I'm really pleased I bought the Trax panniers. They are well built and have endured some torrential rain in the last week over several hundred miles without leaking anywhere, always a good sign. The Ortlieb-style liners which come with the panniers are a bonus too. Fuel economy only seems to be 1-2 mpg down, not that I ride for economy!

Indeed that is what I ment! Excellent, sounds like its the TRAX for me! They seem a good price and look amazing!

Cheers guys! :beerjug:

dunno how much the trax are with frames but i have Stahlkoffer.com panniers and theyre 400 quid plus VAT including the frames and powder coated.... Just thought id throw in an option.

Anyone ever thought of adapting the original R1150GSA rack to the 800?

Just ordered an 800, the 1150GSA is staying, and since I'm really happy with the original GSA panniers, I'm really thinking of adapting a rack on the 800.

No use in having two pairs of panniers, when I'm the only one riding the bikes.

So, any thoughts of how I should be tackling this? Have absolutely no idea how the racks on the 800 are fitted, I really doubt the 1150GSA racks have the same points for ataching, or if the GSA rack is wide enough to even fit on the 800's arse :nenau

Grtz, Philip!

You should have a look to this thread, The 1200GSA is concerned but my guess is that it will applies to the 1150 :(

The 800 frames for the Adventure panniers looks like this

@ ide508, thanks for the answer, and the info, but it doesn't comply with the 1150, not at all :(

The panniers are completely different, and so is the rack.
Tried to buy a rack yesterday on German eBay, only to get sniped at the last second, damn those snipers

There'll be some serious cutting and welding envolved, but I'm just wondering if it's doable anyway? If it's just simply impossible, than it's better to known now, then when I'll have the bike in August, and have to leave to Morocco a few weeks later without panniers

Grtz, Philip!

Metal Mule 'Series I' topbox and 31+38 litre pannier setup.

Tim

Great taste in vehicles! I have the 2008 650GS and a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder SE. It has 64,000 kms on it now and still like new. I went on a 2 week trip to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and Pathfinders are very common over there, along with Land Rovers. Take care.

Stahlkoffer locks...

Right, finally made my decision, and went with the Stahlkoffer "City Koffers" for my F650GS... will be fitting them at the weekend!

Now, what do you other Stahlkoffer owners use as locks for the lid latches?

I've bought a set of four small padlocks, but it strikes me they'll rattle a lot when "making adequate progress." Are there any quieter alternatives?

I guess I could just use split-rings to make sure the latches stay closed, or re-usable cable ties, but that's not very secure...

Any thoughts?

ARDcases

Just had some ARDcases fitted this weekend and they are the dogs ...........
They have integrated locks and at a price of £350 for panniers, locks, fitting kit and 2 rear bottle holders, powder coated to almost any colour you want, i think that is a good deal. all you need extra is a set of rails (possibly TT) and you're sorted
Roger is a great guy as well and fits everything in no time, with a great cup of tea to pass the time as well.:jager

ive done 14k miles over everything with the stahlkoffer panniers, same as yours. I just put normal padlocks on them, they dont rattle... or if they do no one has ever commented and i cant hear them anyway... so just throw some padlocks on and be happy you got probably the best deal out there... Is he still doing the frames AND panniers for 400 quid plus VAT?

Yes, I had to 'quieten down' 3 medium size locks on a trailer I own, so I cut up an old bicycle tube, and slipped a 'band' of rubber of the lock surface, but with the bottom of the lock exposed, et voila! Quiet, non scratching!

Tip: use skinny racing tube for small locks, and mountain bike tube for bigger locks. Then replace with another piece after year 2!

I can't tell you for definite that a BMW top box will fit with Trax panniers, but as you can see from my post above I've got a Givi top box and it all fits fine. The Trax frames still allow you to use the mounting bolts on the back of the bike, so presumably any rear rack which uses those will also be fine.

As with much of my kit, I bought my panniers, frames etc from Sam at Chainspeed.
