ILMV the frames and panniers were £399 + vat, I rode down to Bernies workshop and he fitted them for £40 IIRC, while I was there he showed me the black powder coated plate which I got as well which was a steal at £45.
For the 800 you get the smaller "City" boxes which keep the overall width down when fitted. I believe the 1200 can take larger boxes without being too wide.

The only thing I had to get extra was a set of combination padlocks.

Nice! A damn sight cheaper than the Vario cases, whats the purpose of the top plate? Just to act as a platform to put stuff on?

Yeh, didn't want one originally as I don't want a top box, but it's been handy to strap stuff to. Went to Ingleton last weekend and fastened two pairs of walking boots and waterproofs in a dry bag to it. Also strapped an A3 laminator to it yesterday for work!

F800GS Quick Release Top Box with Wheels!
Hi Everyone,
Not sure if this is of any interest to any of you but thought I'd show you my solution and see if it appeals to anyone else.
I mainly use my F800GS for commuting so wanted a rear box that was quick released, tough, waterproof and with wheels! I looked at the Caribou cases which were close but they said it couldn't be done with wheels.
I got hold of an SKB case that was the right size and then left it in the capable hands of my brother in law while i was on holiday. He loves a project!
And this is what he turned out. Now it works perfectly and he can make more of these if there's enough interest. Don't even have a rough idea of price but will find out if anyone's interested. We could supply with the case or just the plate for you to mount to a case of your own.
It has a very simple three point key locating points and a bolt that interlocks the plates together. There is provision for a padlock on both the case and also to fix the brackets together if you want some security. Personally I don't need it as I take it off immediately at each end of the journey.
If anyone's interested or has any comments or questions please let me know.

I'm on the final death-throws of ordering some ARDCase panniers (Like the MM ones, but tha'ts a LOT of travelling i can do with the price difference) and am trying to work out what size. I have no previous experience with panniers, only a top box and strapping things onto the rear seat - which is not good 2 up! Anyone have good guidance on how large i shoudl go for? At the moment, i'm thinking i should get a set of 31l/38l, like the MM standard size?

I have 2 x 38 lit panniers which works really well 2up if you need to carry camping / cooking / food as well as spares & tools. We could travel indefinitely with that capacity.
I also have a top box, but its strictly for helmet & gloves as well as maps.
32 / 38 sounds like a good combo to me. If you don't need to cook / camp then 2 x 32lit should do the job. The less you carry the easier and more enjoyable the bike is to ride...

Just an idea folks.... what I've done 
For the overland to India I've fitted a Peli 1450 case on the top of a Wunderlich rack/plate. One helluva tough cooky, waterproof and bombproof
Looks great, does what I want nicely. The Samsung NC10 Netbook sits nicely in the lid, hopefully cushioned from any shocks. The Coup de grâce is the 12v supply in to it, from a fused Centech unit, so that I can charge my phone, iPod, camera, Netbook etc.

its a Trax system like i said before i like the pannier rails cause you can take them of in a few seconds but i hate the trax panniers i just wish ard cases could be adapted to fit the trax pannier rail systemHey Terry

I had the Wunderlich plate anyway, so just sat the Peli case on it and used longer mounting bolts from the inside, so it can't be removed when it's locked. The case is strong enough to manage without the plate, but leaving that on gives extra bungee mounts
You'd just need some spacers and longer bolts to mount to a standard 'rear end' the bolt heads inside the case being gently domed (coach bolts) so as to not abraid anything inside, although it is lined with a layer of soft foam
To remove it is a nut and bolt job but that's not an issue with me, it's there to stay, if nothing else other than an oversize lunch box, which in fact it does double up as

Well I am planning a trip to Europe, and as a geek, it is important that I have no less than a thousand gadgets (DSLR, Netbook, iPhone etc etc etc), so rather than squashing them in the panniers your solution would be better.
