Could you post some pics of where he mounts the units as I took the 55w hids of my 1200 before it went to fit to my 800 and have been scratching my head ever since about where to mount everything.

go back about 5 pages on the 650/800 forum and check out the thread on lights. plenty of photos etc in there of how we've mounted the ballasts etc.

Used sensibly HID's are a great addition to a bike, my commute is on bumpy back roads and a 35w HID in the dip on my 1150 ADV was a wonderful addition and was more than adequate for my needs, they are a little bit slow to come to full light so I kept the original main beam, I guess this would not be such a problem if main comes on in addition to dip but I never felt the need for it.

Where they become a problem IMHO is when people nail on 4x50w units. twice I came face to face with something running such light (A 1200 ADV I think) each time he all but blinded me even from a mile away and each time he was late dipping which left me wobbling around a corner wondering if I was going to hit something cos I sure as hell could not see where I was going.

Totally unnecessary levels of light used without thought for fellow road users, no doubt he was in a rush to get to the other side of the world...

and another one....

Lost one of my headlamp fixings in Budapest a couple of weeks ago. Much hilarity in my attempts at the language to get it sorted. And then the bike cut out on the Italian autosrada at about 80mph; but that's another story.

fitted!!

They were fitted, and they look very neat.
The ballasts are tiny, so fit out of the way easily.
The igniter boxes just fit under the headlights in a little bit of dead space that lives there.:thumb2

I can't see the magic button to permit me me to attach photos:nenau, so if you want to see what it look likes follow the link below

fiited

Baz at HID's 4 Motorcycles fitted the lights for me.:thumb2. If you're in the Manchester area I would heartily recommend him.

My worry about the delay in high beam coming on is a worry no more. He sourced some new and apparently clever units that flash just like a bulb would- instant!:JB

I'm sitting waiting for it to get dark now!!

HID kit to their 800 or 650 ???

Wanted to know if anyone has installed a HID lighting kit to their machines, if so to the main or dipped or both. Also the 35 or 50 watt kits and their thoughts?

Many thanks

Fruitcake has a set of Les Wassels Hid's on her 650, main and dip.

If you ask her nicely she might tell you how I did it:rolleyes:

( Les kits are really easy to fit )

fogs fitted to adv-spec bars

having mulled over what spots/fogs to fit to the bike, and how, i jerry-rigged something up myself. a good deal of the aux light mounting solutions place them very close to the main headlight cluster, which didn't seem to spread the light enough for me. the adv-spec cross bar seemed to invite some kind of light mounting. i want them to give me presence, not offer more driving light (i have 2x50w HID's), and i didn't want to pay TT or PIAA prices. so i bought a pair of 55w halogen fogs that are the same shape as the headlights, bought x4 1 inch brackets at a local motor factors store and sprayed them black, got some screws, a local guy to fabricate some half inch spacers, a second hand auto-switch donated from Aidan, and total cost is £19! will get them wired up when i get better from some minor surgery inflicted upon me this am.

I put HIDS on my F800GS- both high & low beam. I think 35w are bright enough for anyone. (I think I also heard that 55w might not be very legal- which may be true or lies!).
The very latest ones have very fast "on" times, so are fine for high beam.

I've a link to photos of the installation on a recent thread about HIDs.

Thanks for the info, Had a look at the HID50 site, lights look really good, i think they will be next months buy!

In Les' vendors of innovation thread, i posted pics' of my installation. I'd definatly recommend it :thumb2. I changed both the dip and main to the 50's with a color of 6000k. Very easy to install. High beam does take a little time to 'warm up', but i don't flash very often, so have not found it an issue.

so as i said, i've got a 2nd-hand autoswitch AS-5NB2 which is for pre-canbus BMW's. Given I know nothing about electrics, is it still ok to wire this into the new 800 for my new lights? I also have a Centech fuse panel, is it worth connecting this up too? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

I've got a centech also and it worked a treat for my £14 ebay led specials. After trashing them on the Sibirsky Extreme trip I am watching your setup closely Si. I was advised to steer well clear of the Canbus and so now all 'Electrical Projects' go through the Centech. Like you I'm an electrics novice but I get stuck in which makes me a 'dangerous electrics novice' :augie

Joking aside it is quite straightforward. :thumb2

lights done...

so the non-canbus switch wouldn't work. wired the centech fuse panel in (just in case I want to fit a microwave or something in the future??) and wired the lights to a 20amp fused relay. the lights come on when the ignition is turned on, but can be turned off by removing the fuse in the relay which is just below the headstock (handy if a jobsworth police decides i am too bright). all in all, much cheaper than any after-market options and all the brackets and parts etc cobbled together from local motor factors...
just been for a dusk run and they really fill the sides of the road brilliantly. obviously the HID's do the trick in front of the bike, but the combo works well. a bonus is the nice glow off the gold fork legs at the bottom of your peripheral vision through the gap.

very nice Si! :thumb2

I'm going down the LED route again. Only this time I hope to get waterproof LED's. My others got soaked a few times and didn't fair too well.

The lights below are readily available on ebay. Thinking of mounting them on the TT handguards. Perhaps with Velcro. Should be able to wrap them around the side a bit too which gives me side on presence at junctions. :beerjug:

Will keep you posted of my progress.

Looking good Jon.

I assume that it would also be easy enough to rig up a badolier with those lights and plug it into a power point on the bike.

You could then wear the bandolier and be far more visible in low light conditions :)

Just an idea........... :)
