I hear you, people that don't ride never understand when I tell them I'd much prefer riding in 50-60F weather than 100F. They look at me like I've lost my mind. It's always, "what a great day to go riding", no, it's fooking 100F. :blast
As they sit in their A/C homes and watch TV. :mmmm

Fitting HID's

I fitted some to both main and dip yesterday. If anyone is wondering where to hide the ballasts there is a snug space behind the side panels, roughly level with the bmw badge if that makes sense.

This Aussie did a pretty slick installation. I installed an HID from Les in my dip and put the ballast right behind just like

Holy Crap!!

Riding home tonight, 75mph, Hella micro DEs on, and the heated jacket
cranked up.

Bike barely kept the voltage above 12V going down the highway. This is one weak ass charging system.

Came to a traffic light and the voltage dropped below 12....:eek:

I'm going to have to be sure to watch what I have on. :mad:

I long for the days of my 750W R1150GSADV. :rob

As another correspondent suggested, you have a current deficit.
(Don't know if a rather good pun such as this works in yankeeland)

However: you have just discovered that the alternator on the bike is inadequate for the loads you are placing on it.

Easiest solution:
You are running Hella DE foglights @ 55w each.
The only known function of these lights is to blind oncoming motorists.
They certainly don't help you see where you are going in normal conditions - (Unless your perception of "Forward vision" is 2 metres or less.)
Suggest you put them on Ebay, & if you really wish to see where you are going, purchase a set of Hella DE driving lights. (35w HID) Wire them to go off/on with dip/main.

The 44 w reduction in total load will probaly get you out of your current dilemma. (Another pun to go over the head of a yankeeland citizen)

Only problem is paying for Hella HIDs.
Over the years I have bought 3 sets of these wonderful lights, & the prices never cease to shock me.

That's the only issue to watch.

You've only added about 220 watts of load (2 x HID plus 2 x 55w). The sat nav and even heated jacket don't take more than about 40w.

But an alternator will not generate its maximum at all engine speeds. At tickover it'll possibly barely cover the engine and fuel pump (without any lights on) - any extra load has to be covered by the battery until you speed the engine again.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much unless you sit at red lights for long periods with everything switched on or unless you fregularly find your battery is flat.

Tip - 5 miles before you get home switch a few things off to ensure that the battery is fully charged when you park up.

xenon and fog light combination

Firstly Hi to everyone as i'm new here!

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a combination of xenon and fog auxillery lights.

Touratech do a neat system which match xenon/fog but i didnt fancy the £499. price plus shipping.

they have the left hand as xenon wired into the highbeam / flasher and the right hand as a fog light working off a sepperate additional switch great kit

Any ideas for a good dual system, i'm looking for one of each, one for further powerfull high beam, and also one for Fog, Rain, Clouds

Speak to a member called Les Wassall (send him a PM ) he can supply and fit HID headlamp kits and he does conversions on Hella lamps which may help you :thumb
 
I just fitted a slim line system to my machine from Les. All i can say is that i wish i fitted them months before, they damm good. I fitted the ballast units on the yellow panels by the handle bars (literally behind the F 800 GS decals).

You've obviously never ridden in Texas, where it's mandatory to be "seen". I have an HID in my dip and use it when I really need to "see" where I'm going.

The Hellas aren't the problem, the problem is the heated jacket. I rode into work this morning in the dark, had the Hellas on and the heated grips on high and the voltage never dropped below 13.6. :clap It's the jacket that's causing the current deficit. :rolleyes: (yes, even we uncouth, uneducated yankees get puns, even poor ones.) I'll just watch what I have on in the future.

Just FYI, never call a Texan a Yankee, them are fighting words....:Aurelius

(You do already have a HID headlight)
No, I was just suggesting a method of relieving the problem without turning off the jacket.

On to other things:

I, living in Ireland, never thought of Texas as being cold enough to need a heated jacket. I presume it is winter nights.

Next: What and why the insult regarding yankees? Over here we are uneducated in your local customs & dislikes.

My headlight is not HID, at least not here in the US. Our headlights are 55W halogen, much like the Hella Micro DEs.

Texas can get downright nasty, not for long periods of time, but nasty nonetheless.

The Yankee quip was done tongue in cheek. There are quite a few people here in the South that still don't think we lost the "War of Northern Agression" (another southern expression). :rolleyes:
 
Most heated jackets only draw 35-40w if they are on full. So the jacket isn't likely to be your problem.

It might the the straw on the camel's back though.

I've left my headlight main/dip as standard.

HID aux light, comes on with main beam, only on the right, 55w fog light on the left which is on all the time ... works for me :thumb
