► Lights, indicators, electrics and alarm

I'd be concerned that the alternator isn't powerful enough for dip+main+spots+fogs, i.e. six lights in total. What I'd suggest is a HID conversion for dip and main, and then a pair of auxilliary lights (i.e. four lights).

One tip I read is to turn off all aux lighting a mile or so from home to help top the battery before stopping.

I've run the 800GS with heated grips, heated jacket, dip beam and aux 55w fog light on all the time, all day, plus occasional use as and when with headlight main beam and HID aux headlight on, with no probs at all :thumb

The Yankee quip was done tongue in cheek. There are quite a few people here in the South that still don't think we lost the "War of Northern Agression" (another southern expression).

the south will rise again ;)

so if a Yankee is a slang term for the 'Northern' states, is there a similar term for the confederacy ?

Rednecks, the Klan, :augie, white trash :augie, or just plain Southerners, or if you really want to rub it in our face, losers. :comfort

BTW, my heated jacket is 100W, most jackets (Powerlet, Gerbing, etc.) run 90-100W. Vests usually run 65W.

edit: Usually when using the term "yankee" it's preceded by damn as in "another damn yankee has moved to Texas"

I've left my headlight main/dip as standard.

HID aux light, comes on with main beam, only on the right, 55w fog light on the left which is on all the time ... works for me :thumb

Thanks for the advice and tips Guys,

I like your light set up Micky very effective and looks good on your bike, the bike copes with all that power drain which is a good test! and HID conversion for the standard lights sounds a good idea Tim!

I have sent a pm to Les to see what he can come up with, i'm looking for extra powerfull beam for thoes darkest of places also need a bit more for the pea soup fog/clouds so the one of each seems a great balance.

I supose its about knowing what the bike will take power wise and replacing whats used, and the greater road presence has to be a good thing.

F650GS Hid light conversion

Just had the HID light conversion from Mr L/W the kit I went for was 35w a big thanks to Les for his help and swift service not to mention ukgser discount and patience with my pinging many emails his way (my lack of understanding!) and detailed pics of fitting :clap:clap fitted today here are the resulting difference.

the standard lights (candles) pictures were taken before the rain brewed in sunny essex. converted to Hid as the rain clouds gathered overcast.

Then there was Light!:clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

But i dont take credit for fitting Big thank you to my friend for giving up his time and doing an excellent job (how do you make thoes wires disapear like that?) :clap :clap :clap

next project is fog lights supplied by L/S.

A prototype bracket has been made for me specifically for the F650GS fog/drive lights and is with the powder coaters as i write this, more details to follow once fitted.

Fog / Drive and LED

After fitting the HID in dip and main i finaly got round to adding Fog / Drive additional lights already for the winter now, thanks to Les /W for the LED bulb which takes the yellow tinge away from the HID (side light)

LEDsidelight.jpg

The fog / drive Micro DE's were supplied by Les in standard form (HID was available) I wanted to use in actual Fog or clouds and not throw the light back to me and they look powerfull enough in standard form.

the next step was I could not source a bracket BMW do not do auxilary lights for my bike so i had to look elswhere. Chad of Rugged Roads put a huge input into designing a prototype bracket for my bike it was suggested that the lights were fitted lower so they would be away from my Indicators which works realy well and create a triangalar light pattern giving greater road presence here are the results. the bracket blends very well with the black on the bike . Chad added the shields also giving a well Rugged look (rugged Roads)

The switch is nice and clear mounted next to originals.

the light patern is nice and wide close in realy fills in around the HID a usefull filtering tool also surely everyone must see me cant they ? :blast:blast Fog what Fog

So thanks again to Les/W for the great bit of kit and Chad from Rugged roads for the bracket and final finish and a great service provided bty these two guys :clap :clap :clap

many thanks :D :D :D :D

OK, on the way in this morning, (rush hour last night was a nightmare), steady 70mph/4.5Krpm (in the HOV lane), GPS indicating 13.7V.

Turned on the Hella DEs 2x55W, voltage barely dropped, maybe 13.5+/-, turned on the 35W HID from Les, voltage dropped to 12.8+/-, turned on the heated grips on high, voltage dropped again to 12.5+/-. It regained a little the more
I rode. That's without the heated liner turned on. :eek

I guess what this tells me is I should be careful if I've got too much load on the bike, especially when not running above 4K rpms.

Texas Mule,

Since installing Les' 35W HID have you had any electrical problems similar to what is suggested on the HID50 site? I'm looking for aux or primary lighting improvment for my F8GS but am not sure which way to go. I'm also concerned about the milky and burnt lens symptoms that result from installing the 50W systen - have you experienced any of this with the 35W lights?

Thanks,
Len

Been meaning to upload these photos of my bike, with LED’s from BIKEVIZ as suggested by zippygser. I installed the little LED’s into my hand guards. Power is from the canbus (which also powers my GPS) with an inline fuse just in case. All works fine. I have had a few people as well as bikers ask about the lights. They great.:thumb

Be grateful for any help.

I'm trying to fit the Wunderlich Micro Flooters and have got to the point where they need to be spliced into the headlights. The sheet from Wunderlich refers to connecting a black wire (part of the supplied harness) to the grey/blue wire that runs into the headlight - the pictures refer to a grey/black wire?

I've looked at the TT fitting instructions for their lights and they refer to splicing onto the white cable (high beam).

I've not been able to track down the grey/blue or grey/black wire running into the headlight - I'm assuming its one of a bunch wrapped together that runs just below the headlights. I can see a solid red, a white, a couple that are white and something else - not sure whether to tamper further or look elsewhere.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi BarryT.
I fiited the same lights to my F8GS, a month ago.
On the F8GS, I connected the black wire to the White/Brown wire that goes to the small side pilot lamp, below the dipped beam lamp, using the small red scotchlok crimp inline splice crimp.
This wire is the 12V positive, comes on with the ignition, and supplies 12V, to the relay.
I'll post a photo later
Hope this helps u;)

Hi barryt

Did you use the switch that came with the kit, or an autoswitch or similar?

haven't kept up to speed with the lights etc. mounting my aux lights on the adv spec cross bar as per an earlier post has proved to be a short term solution. they got utterly covered in crap in the winter to the point that it obscured the light. I'd like to get a pair of the hella micro de fogs and maybe HID them, but i need some kind of mounting point. has chad from rugged roads made his bar available yet, or does migsel have an offering yet? somebody help me!! :thumb
