I can heartily recommend the BMW touring screen. Fitted it last night and my 800 is like a new bike! At motorway speeds its tons more comfortable
And You don't experience more buffeting and noice when the wind is moved up against the helmet? What is "motorway speed" and how tall are You?

Cheers

Im 5ft 9 and I have the lowered seat (though don't think the seat makes a massive difference). Its definitely an all round improvement have not noticed any extra buffeting round the helmet. Speed was 70-75mph

Could you perchance post a couple of pics of your bike with the touring screen ? :bounce1

Will do. Only fitted it last night and it's in for its first service this afternoon but when I get it back tomorrow I shall snap a couple.

I have some barsnake on order I think its here but I have not had time to
use it yet and this weekend is out as I am away so it will have to be next week some time I ordered the lv5 guessing more is better than not enough at least I can stop pouring when bar is full

I am glad you said about touring screen that is here to but not picked that up either do we think the zumo will fit on the touring screen bracket ????

You wont get a Zumo on the bracket its a fairly light thing and I wouldn't want to mount anything on it its not like the 1200gs version

I'm currently in the Pyrenees and after several hundred miles of high speed (75-85 mph) touring I don't think the BMW touring screen for the F650/800GS is much use at all. There's a huge amount of wind blast and I'm really getting peed off with extracting insects from inside my helmet. Severe neck ache. The BMW System V helmet is particularly noisy with the screen and using the Jet conversion for hot weather touring is out due to wind noise above 60mph.

This is not a touring screen--it's lower than the standard height 1200GS screen.

As it stands, the touring screen is about the height of screen the F650GS should have been delivered with, and a proper touring screen needs to be a lot higher preferably with a higher and stronger brace. My advice would be to hold back and wait for something better to come along.

That's what the forums are all about - lots of different opinions, maybe I'm a short ass and maybe Tim has a particularly long neck!

a lower screen help sometimes, I will ask my dealer tomorrow if there is one shorter than the one that comes with the bike, on my Super Tenere 750 I removed the screen, it is much better without, lower noise etc. at high speed.

FIELD TESTS .....

These are the things we want to hear !!! (Although I feel bad it didn't turn out to be a good improvement, as expected...)

Thanks Tim for being objective in your report. :thumb

The F650GS comes with a shorter screen - you could try that one, but it gives very little or no protection.

I have put the Givi ( I think) screen on mine, from Nippy Norman's. I think it gives me a little more protection than the standard 650 screen, but not much. I am getting the same problems that Tim has with the BMW screen. There is a lot of wind blast and helmet noise. It's also pretty ugly. I am very tempted to go back to the standard screen and wait for something else to come along.

In terms of the 800 as a tourer, here's mine fully loaded!

Me and my 40000Kms F800gs roadtest...

Hi to all UK GSers.

I have just joined the site in order to find the occasional pearl of wisdom, and answer any questions on how the F800GS is to live with.
I am currently in Nepal, having ridden from the UK, covering 40000kms(sorry, but I had my clocks changed to kms in Germany)
In that time, I've had one crash, numerous falls, and the bike stills keeps going.
It has been near perfect, giving me at least 25kms/lt (sorry again..) fully loaded.
I am still on my first set of brake pads (the engine does the job brilliantly), and I've only just got to the point of needing to change the chain and sprockets.
Sprockets is the main reason I am here looking for advice.
It seems a good opportunity to sort out the gearing. (the only downfall that I have found).
The 15T/47T items from Touratech won't be available until Jan2009.
Does anyone know if anybody else makes any?
If not then I guess I'm stuck with BMW parts.

Look forward to hearing from you all soon.
Any questions?

Ian

Well done Ian, thats great to hear... very reassuring for many i am sure, me included since i am away London to Cape Town in a couple of weeks:D

Well done Ian. I am inspired.

Can I just ask…..has your top hose popped off? Does the bike cut out on you? Where did you get your handlebar muffs? And how far did you have to travel for your factory recalls? Ha ha just kidding. See previous threads.

I don’t know about sprockets but can phone around. Happy to ship something if need be.

Take care. Dill

Way to go, Ian! Is there a trip report coming?

Oh, and sorry, can't help with the sprockets. :nenau

The front sprocket at least is equivalent to one used on an Aprilia, the SV1000 I think. Probably because both have Rotax engines. The dealer found it in a catalogue of replacement parts from the number of splines, width, teeth, etc. I didn't get the rear sprocket changed, so I don't know if that is also the same as the Aprilia one.

Welcome to the site ian800gs and congrats on your trip so far :thumb2

Whatever else you do I would certainly stick to BMW original parts, especially sprockets, especially the gearbox sprocket... I wouldn't want to risk those output shaft splines

Keep us posted ... Sue (Gracie on here) and myself overland to India, Nepal, Bhutan next year :thumb

My independent technician has fitted Renthal to other F800's and when Elvie had problems with her F650 Gs chain and sprockets he made inquiries and was informed they could provide replacements, so it might be worth trying them.

Thanks for the words of support, Dill.

I did have the top hose drama, halfway across Europe.
Had it replaced under warranty in Bucharest, Romania.
They also replaced the sump gasket, as it had started to leak.

I have had stalling, yet it seems to be down to that annoying 1st gear.
A bit of extra clutch work seems to help in traffic.
I have found an extra neutral between 5th and 6th also.
The handlebar protectors are BMW.

Apart from all that, it's been great riding, on and off-road.
I hope for another 40000kms.

All the best with yours, Dill

Ian
