► Louder horns (Stebel Magnum etc)

I bought the Stebel Magnum 136db horn

The photo in the Nippy Normans photo is how mine looks. I just made it prettier by adding black shrink wrap over the yellow cable. Installation consists of unscrewing the bolt that connects the old horn and adding the new one which comes with it's own bolt.

The connector to the old horn is via a canbus. You just squeeze the top the connector and it separates from the horn. Take a look at your existing one. You will see what I mean.

Nippy Normans does state that you should not use the Nautilus for the F800GS

FWIW, 'canbus' is a networking protocol. What you've *actually* connected the horn to is a pair of wires........

I was referring to the CAN-bus interface / connector. On the old horn the canbus interface or connector is connected directly to the horn itself. There are no wires. yes on the Nippy Normans horn there are two long yellow wires with the canbus interface on the end but as I previously pointed out this will become clear when you look at the NN photo.

See the old horn below with the canbus interface.

Interesting pots 'Old Man'. I'm happy with my magnum even if it isn't an ear busting 139db. I had to use it this afternoon when a guy pulled out in front of me and only indicated after he was in my lane and had completed his manoeuvre. He definitely noticed the horn and was suprised that the sound was coming from a motorbike :D

My horn's not big enough

Hey there guys,

Has anyone fitted an aftermarket horn to their 800? If so what did you use, is it any good, and where can I get one on-line?

I'm going to be commuting on the 800 and there are a few very congested stretches on rout, and if I need to use the horn I want something that can't be ignored like most manufacture fitted horns.

Cheers

hows it goin arcanum,

+1 on the Stebel magnum kit from Nippy's. Dead easy to fit & even managed to get Black cabbies to back down in London.

+2 on the Nippy's horn. What makes me laugh is when the drivers look round in panic. It's as if they think "How could have I missed something with a horn that loud"?

Then they realise it's a motorbike and not a 7 series beemer :D

+3
My Stiebel blast knocked over a pedestrian who chose to step off the pavement as I was dawdling through the city.

I'd already figured he was blind cos he didn't see my HID50 lights, but his hearing obviously worked :augie

I fitted a Stebel Magnum, although I bought mine from Halfrauds for about the same price. I'm a bit disappointed with it - it's appreciably better then the stock horn, but (obviously) not as loud as the Stebel Nautilus I had on my 1200. Couldn't see a good way to mount the Nautilus on the 800 though.

However, when I get a round tuit, I'm going to fit a pair of Fiamm horns which I've used on various other vehicles, and which I'm sure will be louder than the Magnum. It will mean a little bit of pratting about finding the best place to mount the second horn though, but I have a cunning plan...:augie

I’ve just received my Stebel Magnum from Nippy Norms, I went for what their website details as a ‘specially modified’ kit to suit my F800gs, I’m just a tad disappointed that these modifications seem to have involved lopping of an excess chunk of plastic with a junior hacksaw and then sealing up the resulting hole with a big piece of gaffer tape.

Has anyone else experienced this or am I just special? I can't help but use the 'bodge' word...:augie

(Hmmmm first post and already I'm living up to my user name...arghh!?)

Spooky...i was recounting getting cut up by some a-hole tonight on the way home and after i had shouted, indicated furiously (All in an atempt to find the horn whilst not getting knocked off), i hit the horn and it tooted...no really...thats the only word for it "toot". I was almost embarassed and "tootled" on my way. I spent a while in India on an Enfield in the summer and learned to love the law of the horn. Even they sounded bigger...i'm off to Nippy's!!!

...after i had shouted, indicated furiously (All in an atempt to find the horn whilst not getting knocked off)...

That is what annoys me most about BMW's three button indicator system.

Not that it uses three buttons, not that it's left button to turn left and right button to turn right, and another button to cancel, but that it displaces the horn button to a position that's never where instinct tells me it should be.

And yes, I know that I should just use the horn more until it becomes instinctive to hit the right spot without thinking, when I need to broadcast my position. I just can't bring myself to produce repeated blasts of the horn for no discernible reason to others nearby, solely to familiarise myself with its button's position.

And...

...breathe. IGMC.

I seem to recall that I had to trim the Magnum's cover to get mine to fit nicely (didn't bother using any gaffer tape), but Halfrauds don't sell a "BMW F800GS"-specific version off the shelf. :D

I bought a Stebel horn and mounted it to the front of my SW Mototech bars. Once I had it mounted up...I still had issues hitting the horn switch when it was most needed. For those folk with small hands like me I went out and bought a set of the small plastic "buttons" that you use on the bottom of chair legs that allow a chair to slide on the floor. I got the smallest size which was about the size of a US dime. The have very good foam tape for affixing them. Putting them on the end of the horn and turn cancel switch(s) made hitting the buttons far more easy. If I can get my camera to work I will post picks.
