I'm glad someone has started this one as I've been pondering over choice of oil for a couple of weeks now.

My question is, if for example the dealer has used a fully synthertic and I top up with semi synthetic, then is this bad, good or indifferent?

There is a very good thread somewhere which gives all the detail you will ever need about the types of oils and the ability to mix them. Use the search button and it should pop up.

Interestingly Elvie's 680 Gs was filled with mineral oil at the first service, and semi synthetic at it's second ( different dealer ) Our local independant suggests fully synthetic.

Does anyone know all the torx spanner sizes needed for the bolts on the 800GS.
While on that topic, what is the best tools to keep in your kit while on the road?

I must say i am really impressed with this little number sold by Adventure Spec(shame not all torx sizes added)

Of the normal range you won't need T27, other than that you need T40, T45, T50 and T55. I have a feeling one of these is F650-specific, but it makes sense to take the whole lot.

I took advantage of some of the tool stands at the recent Ally Pally bike show to get a wonderful 3/8 ratchet with a swivel head that effectively converts it into a driver action for £8, another 3/8 minature 3/8 rachet for really lightweight travel for £5, a full set of Draper Torx bits for £5, and so on. My 'tool roll' is a heavy-duty see-through pencil case from Asda that I think was 35p.

Error in F800GS Rider's Manual re torques?

Page 94 of the F800GS Rider's Guide suggests 100Nm torque for the rear quick-release axle in the swinging arm. This seems a bit high. Is it correct?

The 1150s rear nuts for the wheel are 105nm so yes, that seems right.

Yeah generally on most bikes the front and rear wheel nuts (ie the big 30/32mm nuts) are around the 100nm.

HELP!! How much front fork oil do I need??

I am in the process of changing my front forks on my 800 GS. Since I do not have a manual, which is another whole story, I need to find out how much fork oil I need to put into each tube.

Thanks for that. What I was after was the specific service items / together with mileage / time intervals for carrying them out. It's the stuff that you pay your friendly BM dealer shedloads to do at either an annual or inspection service, as appropriate.

Found one for the F800S & ST on the web. But want clarification that this also applies to the newer 800GS.

Didn't ever see this get answered, so here it is....

£153 fecking quids worth

No wonder they recommend Castrol, at £35 + vat so would I

(btw - this is the 1st annual or 6000m service)

Got it & service interval question

Picked my "new" (to me) F800GS last Monday. Having a great time so far.

Couple of newbie questions. I did a search and couldn't find the answers.

1. How long can you disconnect the battery before the "date of next Service" is reset?

2. The previous owner had obviously had some problems with the piece of black plastic that sits on top of the tank with the power socket in it. The bike came with the beemer tank bag on and that held it in place. So now the pins underneath are a bit bent, it doesn't fit properly (gaffa taped for now!) and I can't see how to fit it on properly even thought it looks like it should just clip into place... HELP!

Cost of replacement parts

I (ahem) fell off my F8GS on the White Horse tour

The only damage was to my clutch level and some flexability on the fittings for the handguard extensions, so only need to replace the lever. After my wife's learning experience on a 125 and having to replace a number of levers for 12 pounds, i thought i was in the clear. 45 pounds!

Makes the adjustable ones more appealing for 30 quid more and easier reech for my small hands.

Is this really the going rate?

Handbook less !

Collect my 'pre owned', I call it secondhand, 800 from a Motorrad dealer in the east side of the country on saturday. Bike looked good, not too clean, but that part of the pleasure of owning one of these, cleaning it now and again.
Just a couple of questions from you knowledgable lot please.
What I thought was a user manual turned out to be a BMW Helmet user guide.
Can I get another handbook from somewhere ?
The bike is coming up to 600 miles and I thought due for a service. On contacting the dealer today, I was told it was done at around 400 miles. Should I have it done again at 600 ?
What other books / paperwork should I have had with the bike ?
Finally, is there a toolkit with the bike from new ?

Hi Jon, and welcome, i have a 10 day old 650 and was told to book it in for the free service between 600 and 1000 miles. There is a very basic toolkit attached to the underside of the seat, think its a screw driver, 1-torx, a spanner and something else! I cant beleive the manual would have gone missing after only 600 miles!! who was the previous owner?
