Socket set confusion...

So, I've already bought the 3/8's Torque wrench from NippyNorms.

Now I'm after a socket set to match, Twisticles posted a link to ToolShopDirect who's prices seem very good, they're the first place I've found that offer a decent set or Torx bits at a sensible price.

I've managed to narrow it down to 4 sets, my needs cover my F800GS and a couple of bicycles, I'd like metric/inches and my budget will just about stretch to the most expensive of these, if it's justifiable to the missus.

Draper's "value" introductory set - £15.18 - 51 piece

Draper's decent set - £43.76 - 40 piece

Draper's slightly nicer set - £52.64 - 33 piece

Draper's very nice set in a metal box - £66.81 - 39 piece

The confusing thing for me is that the number of pieces bears no relation to the cost, will the cheap set rust/break/bend/strip heads. Where are Draper adding the value? Is it the quality of the heads?

The most expensive set in the tin case is nice, and the one I'm naturally drawn to, but at over 4x the price of the cheapest.

Should I follow my heart (most expensive), head (???) or wallet (cheapest)?

I never use AF nowadays so why would you need to buy ?

I'd have to look at the quality of them before purchase. Halfords do a good range at good prices.:beerjug:

My bikes are made by Decathlon, the axles are 1/2"

Halfords do a set with less bits that the cheapest Draper one for £20

Also just found this set

After messing about getting most of my bits and bobs bolted on this afternoon, the first thing I'm going to get next time I'm passing Halfords is a telescopic rod with a magnet on the end. There are some aweful holes and recesses in these bikes just waiting to swallow droped nuts and things!

Perfect there's a Halfords on my way to work. I noticed for the touring screen they talk about tightening to 3nm is it really necessary to torque wrench things this low or is it ok to just carefully tighten?

3Nm is barely hand-tight. On places like the windscreen mountings its easy to crack the plastic if you're over enthusiastic. Same with the pannier mounts...the captive nuts inside the tail-end can become uncaptive if you over-tighten.

It all rather depends on your level of mechanical empathy...and your thoroughness in checking for bolts that are working loose every time you stop...

Loose front susspesion bolts

I was checking my 800GS over this morning and was alarmed to find the 4x torx bolts that clamp the bars to the front struts to be loose, below 20nm, anybody know what torque they should be.

Thanks

The amount of torque required to make one of the pannier mount nuts become uncaptive is exactly 3 nm less than I applied. :blast
Think I'll pour some water in and see if it rusts itself captive again. :D

Would have been nice if BuMW had calculated what the oil level should be when it's cold or even had a nifty sight glass on the side of the engine like most of the Jap machines. Burnt my bloody knee on the exhaust when my other half returned after her ride back from work (yep should have been wearing trousers when doing this check) also the dipstick/filler plug was so hard to unscrew when it was hot and even harder to screw back in, anyone else found this? Bloody silly question but has anyone else found an easier way to check the oil?

Oh and burnt my finger as well!

:)

Howabout check the oil as per instructions, then let the bike cool absolutely, then check the oil again. At least then you'll have a 'cold' reference point...

Sounds like a plan!

She's just got back from work, it appears that a small amount of oil is is leeking from where the dipstick screws in. :o

Try putting it on the correct thread next time? :augie

I did the first time, checked and double checked.

Try not putting your knee on the exhaust?!:augie :)
Also I've found it helps to have one rag/tissue to wipe the dipstick and one for the screw top. Incidentally I have the locking dipstick from Touratech which gets even hotter than the standard!

Check the condition of the o-ring around the top of the dipstick a few other folks have had their split/crack on the 650 thumpers (yeah even when almost new...)

Jim

Thanks Jim

Are you guys saying this bike doesn't have a glass type "window" through which check oil level ?

Even my '03 F650 GS has it ! :D :hide

Is BMW going backwards then ? :spitfire

:beerjug:
Bluejay

I read somewhere that some manufacturers are opting for dip stick to measure oil level since this is easily done by seating on the bike and thus keeping the bike straight. Whereas with a glass "Window" you need to keep the bike straight while crouching to check the window which seems more difficult or requires somebody else to help you keep the bike straight.... dip stick seems more sensible to me in this way...I don't talk by personal experienced though as I am only picking my bike tomorrow and I can't really comment!!

But my '05 F650GS don't. Sometimes it's hard to tell what's backwards or not :nenau

But Yes. It's easy to check oil level while sitting on the bike using the stick.

Didn't mean to say my bike was better :P

However, in my experience with this bike I can tell you is very easy to check for oil level.

Just put the bike on its center stand and look for the glass window on the side of the "dummy" tank.

No need to crawl :augie

I just assumed they (BMW) would have done the same on for the 800.

Apparently, I was wrong :hide

F800GS Diagrams

Where can I find microfiches for engine and chasis of an F800GS?

The item numbers seem to be different in USA for etc. "80 00 0 611 656" (GPS connection cable) does not exist, but they have "83 30 0 413 585", it seems to be the same thing.
And they only ship to USA and Canada :(

That was very useful. Diagrams helped me figure out what I need.

A U.S. site is perfect for me as I have my parts delivered to Miami, Fl and then forwarded to Caracas.

Thanks a lot!

I checked my OIl today after a major service 500 miles ago - Oil level is right up to the mark - no problem however the oil is absolutely clean - like new - is this very good or very bad??????
Airhead R100GS
Any thoughts?

Oil

The 800 does not appear to have a thirst for oil like the Boxer, I did a trip to the Alps 1600 miles, no oil added, 2004 1200 GS took 1/2 a litre for the same trip.
But every boxer is slightly different, got to wrag the boxer in its younger days, as we all know.
