THAT cd I have already....:D

I'm looking for the one that has the exploded views and the parts numbers in it which I don't think is in that cd...:aidan

I have a solution for you. Why not leave it at my place. I live about 2 Km from the dealership. You can drive down to ride it you feel like it.:augie:clap

Excellent idea, heay wait a second.................... :)

Well now at least I'll have someone to pick me up at the airport and drop me at the dealer when I go to pick her up in September. AHhhh nothing like that east coast hospitality :)

First ever oil change...

Picked up the bike yesterday and thus far am very happy, might post some pics later.

Had a few "unexplained stalling issues" or USI's as I think I'll start calling them, thankfully none during any maneuvers/junctions so was able to recover gracefully.

Right, onto the title, I'd like to do an oil change, I've heard and read that a quick oil change during the first 50-100 miles is highly recommended. Don't really want to get into a big discussion about why, just know that I want to do it.

Most importantly I want to do it myself or with a little help.

Things I don't have:

• any experience of changing an oil filter
• any proper tools, inc. torque wrench - I have a shitty Argos box of bits nothing or any quality or likely correct size
• a replacement filter - maybe, see below
• the correct oil for this point in the engines life synthetic/semi/organic
• anything to catch the old oil in
• a center stand

Things I do have:

• A oil filter for an F650 Funduro - long shot that this might fit
• some common sense
• the bike

So, what exactly do I need? How exactly do I go about it?

I'm also open to offers of on-site help and in return will supply tea and money for petrol ;)

All help gratefully received as always :)

Saw a few interesting items in the parts catalog, one of which was the touring windscreen mentioned in another post. It was approx US$475 and that is without shipping.. crikey ..:mcgun

Amount of oil needed 2.9L with filer change, without it's 2.7L
use 10W-40

oil change

for your interest, i did an oil change at 2800 miles prior to departing to Europe this Wed. 10/40 semi-synthetic. the oil i took out had barely changed colour and there wasn't one iron filing on the magnetic sump bung. all i can say is...those boys at rotax really know how to build an engine!!!:clap

Jolyon, go sign up at the Hackney Community College motorcycle maintenance course. Spread over 10 wks, 6-8pm on Wednesday nights you will have access to all the tools, oil pans and expert help you will ever need.

You'll be able to change brake pads and your inner tube too :aidan

Cheers for the replies guys.

OK, given this some more thought and realised there are too many things I need to be able to do this, so will be postponing till I have everything I need.

A manual would be a start, the "Rider's Manual" doesn't mention anything about how to perform an oil change. A Haynes or Clymer type manual would be great, but can't find one online anywhere. Is there one available yet? :nenau

The "Rider's Manual" says oil should be filled while the bike is on the center stand, I decided to not go for the standard one, but haven't found a replacement, yet. Have enquired about the SW-Motech one, has anyone else got one of these yet?

Will be ordering the filter, filter tool, Torx set and torque wrench from Nippy Norms.

twisticles, I very nearly signed up for this about a year ago, REALLY should do it, no excuses.

What is the bare minimum that I should carry as a toolkit on an F800GS?

I'll likely never touch the engine so it's just for "straightening, fixing, attaching, tightening" etc.; enough to get me home.

I've got a neat little 1/4" ratchet/socket set:

What else do I need for the F800GS?

not of the top of me head Nippy Norman sells
the front wheel removal thingy

I think the rear is bigger than
20mm not much help I know you will need 2 maybe
I to hold one side and another to hold other side

oh and 2 x open end spanners for your chain adjustment ;)
