Radiator top hose problem+possible solution

Just to inform everyone the F800ST does NOT suffer from this problem and to answer a previous question ref the absence of a proper hose lip around the casting affects ALL the GS800 and 650 models.

I will be seeing the dealer on Tuesday with a view to trying to organise a casting repair ie brazing a lip on, I'll report back.

Another new hose

Well now they have booked me in for the official replacement hose (second replacement). So I will watch this one with interest.
They couldn't tell me whether it is longer or a different material, but this is supposed to be the 'fix'.
Catherine.

What are BMW doing about this?

Having kept an eye on this sticky since my experience in South Africa this last Xmas one thing seems to be missing.

That is a definite fix from BMW. I'm wondering if they simply don't know what to do to fix this or whether the proper fix will cost them too much money (A longer stub/flange perhaps?).

Has anyone had any joy from BMW about how they are going to sort this out?

Well I had the new pipe fitted at the beginning of January and it's still hanging on with no visible signs of movement. Will keep this thread posted though if that changes :thumb2

BMW Fix

I had the top hose "shrink" dangerously close to coming off on a two weeks ago in Morocco. My dealer has said that a BMW fix has been announced. They have ordered the parts and will do the fix next week. I'll post phots.

Hose Recall?

Just had a letter about it, but my bike is a september last year? I thought they had it sorted?

So did I but I haven't had a problem with the original yet.
However, I've only done ~ 2500 miles !!

I phoned my dealer today to book the bike in for it's first service, I asked about the "recall" on the hose. The service manager checked my bike and it's not affected by the recall so it looks like the newer bikes are now coming out of the factory with the upgraded hose fitted. :)

new hose

I took it in for the second replacement, but when they checked they found it had the same batch number as the official fix. So I still have replacement no 1. It's looking good, so far.
~They cannot tell from the part no because it's the same.
Catherine.

PS. I really enjoyed riding through the flood and melt water going to work! It looks lovely now.

Are these "formal" recall notices or a BMW "dealer advisory item" to protect the good name of the brand?

well its says i am w your Writing to inform you that your BMW Motorcycle has a outstanding recall the recall is to replace the coolant hose sent from my Dealer who would get the info from BMW i would imagen

Hose recall

Thanks for all of the info and advice regarding this issue.

I recently contacted my dealer on a non related matter.

He then made me aware of this hose problem, together with the recall for sprocket bolts ,engine mapping and perhaps more worryingly, the recall on my wifes 650 for Front Disc bolts to be replaced.

We have not received any mail from dealer or BMW direct regarding these issues

Thanks again for the detailed advice/pictures

If like me you are caught out in the middle of nowhere and you notice the hose beginning to come off there is an easy and in my experience almost permanent fix. (or at least until you get to a dealer.) On my way down through Spain to Morocco last year I noticed the hose beginning to work free. All I had on me was a couple of spanners and a pack of plastic zip ties. I decided to set to work with the zip ties and keep an eye out for a garage where I could get a hose clip. You can attach a zip tie through the clip and then round back of the plastic pipe that the hose joins onto and pull it tight. (there's really only one way to do it so should be pretty simple unfortunately I don't have a photo, This means the hose cannot move anymore off the pipe. Anyhoo this was at 3000m, i made all through Morocco and serious temperatures and finally got it fixed last week after 9000m! Dealer said it was the best fix he'd seen! Obviously not a substitute for the dealer fix but if you have not had yours done keep a couple of zip ties with you!

Good tip, we should all add a couple of cable ties to the "toolkit" :)

Mine is on its 3rd pipe (second replacement) no dramas, but when i notice its coming off i take it to the dealers and they put a new one on. Cant fault the service but its not a permanent fix, last time it was new hose and a jubilee clip but even that is starting to come off (12500 miles)
I could do a permanent fix by alloy brazing a lip around the entire circumference of the hose stub but that means me spending time and money on something BMW should fix and as the dealer said "who is going to pay for that?"
In the end im sure it will be me :(
Other than that very pleased with the beast :D

My bike was in for a service and although I've already had the interim dealer fix of superglue, they undid this and fitted the longer hose fix.

So hopefully this saga is now behind me (as is the emergency jubilee clip which is secured under the rear of the seat just in case).

Tim
