OK Good news guys! i can answer my own questions here!

OK First up, the hose is too short

secondly Big News-:thumb2 BMW HAVE RELEASED A FIX IN THE FORM OF A NEW LONGER HOSE!:thumb2
and main dealers should have it in stock.

Thirdly MANY, MANY THANKS to Bath Rd (Bristol) Motorrad who not only told me they knew about the fix AND had a replacement hose but also did the job for me this morning after only a couple of hours notice. They upgraded my ECU with the latest mapping as well!
:clap:clap:clap

Looking at the new hose id say its about a 1/2" longer than the old one and fits tight up against the lugs molded into the hose spigot casting.

Fingers crossed, but i hope thats it fixed.

If anyone cant get any sense out their dealer i suggest you ring Mike at Bristol Motorrad as he knows all about the problem and was extremely helpful.

all the best

Hi all, I rang the dealer in Bristol, and explained the situation with my bike and the hose, he said the hose had been changed and had a new part number [17 12 76 79 345] had been supplied. I rang my local dealer today with the "new" number - checked on the parts system- and told me that the number is the same as it was when the bike was made [mar 2008]

Once again, at the risk of repeating misen ... as per my thread above... quote...

"Just what I did Tim ... back to the alloy of the stub, three or four spots of superglue on the bare alloy, pull the hose back over it, fit jubilee clip and no further problems"

Over 10,000 miles now, from blizzards in the Schwarzwald to the desert heats of Morocco .... no problems :thumb

maybe its the same part number but the actual part has changed? it wouldnt be the first time.

I carefully examined my bike when i first got it in May (owing to concerns being raised about it on this and various other forums) and im sure the hose was shorter than the new one which replaced it in Nov
(fast approaching 10k miles now!)

hiya

noted about the adv rider bit, the main thing with me is I didn't want to muller the warranty.....

Spoke to my dealer again today- who said that in the absence of a fix or new part, "jus rub back to the alloy n glue it on along with jubilee clips"

tommorow i will be mostly learning how to remove the side panels:mmmm

a tip about removing panels which I've just learnt the hard way.

  1. take note of where the torx screws came from and their varying lengths.
  2. make sure that what ever mod you made doesn't foul the panels when you try and put them back on.
  3. be sure not to drop washers/screws/fixings into the black hole that his the internals of the F800
  4. try not to remove the beak entirely as it's a bugger to get back on
  5. There's no need to remove the air intake as that is all part of the panel. (ignore the little shiny black screw cover near the end of the intake. It's a decoy)

Had my 800 since May with 7000 KMs on the clock. Recently notice that coolant was leaking out of the right side. Took it to the dealer who said that this was a fault but that it doesn't happen on all bikes so no recall. Changed the hoses on guarantee no problem.

So far my experiences have been

- leaking from top hose, hose tightened by me
- hose came off on M25, cost BMW a packet to ship me and bike back to Eastbourne
- hose refixed by me with jubilee clip
- came loose again
- spent most of day taking bike into dealer for fix who took jubilee clip off
- hose came loose again in Morocco but fortunately I had another jubilee clip
- hose came loose again in the UK
- dealer had bike overnight for another fix and again took jubilee clip off
- bought another jubilee clip and holding breath.

Not exactly impressive is it?

650 GS - It's happened to me too

Mrs NB and I came to South Africa for our Xmas holiday this year. In fact I'm writing this in the lounge at Jo'burg airport whilst waiting for our flight to Cape Town.

In short we hired a 650 GS as I wanted a change from my 1200 Boxer and I've fancied a decent ride on one of the 650/800 GS models since they came out. Said bike had just over 12000Km on it and looked as good as new. I might hasten to add that the bike was hired from Motorrad Executive Rental, just around the corner from the BMW Motorrad dealer here in Boksburg - Just down the road from the International airport. Therefore no chance of the bike suffereing from a lack of back-up one would think.

All was fine until we stopped on the N4 bound for Nelspruit. I noticed a damp (And rather warm!) patch on my right knee. After looking around the top hose from the water pump had come adrift and was leaking all over the shop.

To cut a long story short we managed to get to our destination where BMW assist came out the following day. The chap replaced both the hose and used a jubilee clip to fasten the hose back on. :augie

All seemed well until we went for a ride the following day. Again all was fine until we slowed on entry to Hazyview (Having been cruising along the open road at around 110-120 Km/hr) when the bike started overheating. Once we got back up to speed the temp came down though remained higher than before with 5 bars showing on the temperature gauge.

Upon arrival at our guest lodge the bike threw a wobbly and ejected the remains of it's header tank contents through the top of the cap, all over my visor! Suffice to say I received another bike (1200 GS) and we managed to have some more touring around the area.

What confuses me is why does the bike display such symptoms? I see from previous threads that the hose is a known weak spot but this appears to be more than simply a poor-fitting hose/retaining clip.

Is there something more to this issue than meets the eye?

Hi Tim et al,

had my hose slip a couple of weeks ago, looking at the stub pipe from the water pump, I dont think the hoze or the clip is the problem, If you look at the end of the pipe there is a retaining ridge- but only for a small part of the circumference of the pipe,- what I would expect for this kind if thing is the retaining ridge all the way round the pipe, - this could be why BMW are dithering a little with a proper fix- it would need the pump body recasting etc ????? whaddya think ???

I wrote something similar on post #29 of this thread, so I totally agree with you Chris.

Can you imagine the cost to BMW of recalling and retrofitting a properly flanged pipe.

Tim

good job we arn't entering a reccession, otherwise bmw would make us wait till the bikes are out of warranty:augie

I spoke to my dealer about the leak, who said that I could do what ever I wanted to sort this- and it wouldnt comprimise the warranty.....

may drop the pump body off and chemical metal a new flange?

Pretty obvious it's a crap casting

Just had a flash....it may be possible to rip some fairly coarse (80 or 100) grit cloth backed sandpaper (emery cloth) in narrow (1/8", 3mm) strips or get some coarse grit sanding cord (used by folks who do wood turning. Wrap it aroun the back of the water pump housing snout and carefully create a bigger ridge for the hose and clamp to get a "bite" into.

I had my pipe replaced afew thou miles ago and have had no problems since but im tempted to get in some of that alloy braze material to make a new "housing lip" in anticipation of the time when i will need to.

As you say though, BMW should bite the bullet and issue a recall and new castings though.

M

Further to my last does anyone know of any F800ST's that have had this problem??
If not is it the same casting, if its not, and no problems have been experienced with the ST version then would it fit the GS version???
Or could it be adapted to fit the GS??

I have not had the issue, but if I did I would consider removing the casting, and masking it off then sand blasting the hose-seating area enough to remove the paint and get some surface roughness working for me ...

Just a suggestion...
Jim

Definitely a good winter project....considering the housing costs $74

Mine is working itself off again. the jubilee clip and the original are still not enough to hold it in place. Looks like I will have to get sanding next. :blast

Does anyone know how much fluid is lost when you take the pipe off completely when doing the repair? Just wondering if I should have a bucket ready or not.
